The Secret World???

yogarogueyogarogue Member Posts: 7

Hello MMORPG community, this is my first post. However, I read the forums and scour the webpage all the time...

I am currently playing ffxiv arr and I really enjoy it.

Originally I was deciding between both ffxiv and the secret world. I am happy with my choice but I am wondering if I should still purchase the secret world for just 30$.

FFXIV is a well developed game, however it can become a bit repetitive at times and I can grow a tad tiresome of the gameplay. I was hoping that the secret world might be a game I can play in between these lulls and wanted a fresh take on that idea from the mmorpg community.

So please share your opinions about the secret world or maybe another game that you could recommend. I am strongly considering the secret world due to the differences in design and gameplay that both games have from eachother as well.

PS. I also have the feeling that The Secret World has similar gameplay to the original city of heroes. Am I correct in the assessment. I really enjoyed city of heroes due to its unique approach to MMO it was refreshing to play something that was different from most on the market at the time.

Didn't play CoH but I can tell you that The Secret World is not your average mmo. It might be a very nice break from repetitive play, since there are lots of missions requiring you to think before you act.

I have a lifetime account with TSW and have never regretted it.

The combat is very simmilar to coh (and gw2) in that it is state driven. Character progression isgreat with lots of choices, much like coh! And way better than the normal progression. It's les role play than coh. Leveling in tsw is great, better than coh. End game maybe not so much, its a bit like early wow, quite elitist.

The dungeons are good. Pvp is rubbish. Crafting is ok.

To add though, to people that really really love coh, tsw is probably the closest game.

    No way.

City of Heroes felt like an MMO, with tons of cooperative overworld content.

TSW is mostly a singleplayer game with optional coop. Virtually everything is instanced.

I didnt think TSW was a very good game at all....The combat and enemy animations were just awful......While some of the quests were really good, others were really awful.....It plays like a single player game with other people around....I guess it all depends on what yo uwant out of a game, but this one was major fail for me....Glad I played it in open beta and did not have to pay for it......

I'm a fan so obviously I'd recommend to purchase it, no surprise in there :)

On the other hand, there's a surprise (to me) in this CoH comparison, never thought about that. I think on some parts it's a fitting one, on other parts it's not.

While CoH was a "regular" mmo, TSW is more like a heavily lore / story driven, multiplayer adventure game. It has no levels (and with it no exemplar/sidekick system like in CoH), and it tries to leave the usual questhub focused questing behind. Which is making it a nice option if you want to break away from the regular repetitve mmo play.

There are similarities to CoH as well, like the character looks (it's purely cosmetics, like CoH's costumes), the on-the-fly sidequests (like CoH's police radio), lots of collectibles scattered in the world (like the badges in CoH),

and of course the biggest one, the free character development system and the multiple roles within one character. Ok, I know the Freeform arrived in Champions Online, but in CoH you could build almost as freely your powers with the many powersets. So if you loved the build theorycrafting aspect in CoH, then you'll love TSW.

I wanted to love TSW. I played it when it first came out, my main two complaints that were supposed to be fixed still exist. The character creation is horrible, and for a beautiful looking game that is important. And second, it is a single player game not a real MMO.

Lifetimer here as well. Although I'm taking pauses now and then I still consider TSW to be one of the best themeparks.

ive played it off and on since it came out, though not very recently.

for story, puzzle/investigation, and a downright fun thinking-person's game you want TSW.

    the combat animations are horrid.

while character customization improved a wee bit from launch, its still lacking. for someone like me who would love to rp in that setting its kinda hard when everyone looks like first cousins or closer.

but really those two things are the only big things that keep me away from the game.

"There are at least two kinds of games.
One could be called finite, the other infinite.
A finite game is played for the purpose of winning,
an infinite game for the purpose of continuing play."

secret world is a good mmo. awesome storry, maybe the best in any mmo so far.

and at the end game, you got some item grind too if you want... or you just chill and play the storry :P

combat might be a bit "weird" at first, but if you have a good pc and can play it without lag, the game surely is fun, especially when played with some buddies.

and the investigation quests are awesome, if you dont go like "uh great internet plz tell me what to do and click" you will surely have some fun time.

"believe me, mike.. i calculated the odds of this working against the odds that i was doing something incredibly stupid… and i did it anyway!"

Strange but not surprising for this site where many posters subscribe to the Humpty Dumpty theory of meaning and will routinely redefine terms like "MMORPG" and "single-player game" so the former excludes any game they personally dislike regardless of how many players can be playing the game together in the same copy of the same zone, and the latter can be used of a game while simultaneously complaining that the only thing to do at "endgame" (a term that has been grotesquely perverted in MMORPG land but that's a rant for another day) is to grind 5-man hardmode dungeons or zerg PvP.

Edited to add: to the OP, as I've not played Final Fantasy 14 (yet: I bought it on a whim but haven't activated my account after getting sidetracked by the latest TSW additions), or City of Heroes past the starter zone, I can't really compare either with The Secret World. I do know that there is a noticeable community of ex CoH players in TSW.
