There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein "Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre
This is the new business model that is going to be very common now, it isn't just some SOE thing. This and kickstarter is just how things work, people need to just get over it.
This business model for games has been around for about fitteen years now. It has just changed name over time to match the shift in what's delivered.

Paying for Beta? Don't think so, only been the last few years this has become common, your memory is getting a bit foggy.

I think Smed is jealous of what Chris Roberts has achieved with Star Citizen and somehow thinks he's going to waltz his fat ass up to the trough and try to horn in.
If paying for this type of access is your sort of thing, I wish you all good gaming & I hope you enjoy it. It just feels sleezy to me and really dampens my enthusiasm for the game.
I agree with you, except I never had much in the way of enthusiasm to begin with. I've learned my lesson dealing with $OE games, so this blatant cash grab is no surprise.
Originally posted by CrazKanuk At this point, Open Beta is essentially release because they generally don't do a DB wipe on launch, so just shift everything backwards from there, so Alpha is more like Closed Beta, really, lol. you bring up a good point
I wonder if SOE is going to do a wipe of the alpha/closed beta player creations
Yes. While we will do everything in our power to minimize wipes, it is important to note that Alpha and Closed Beta are testing periods. Unexpected behaviors of players and technology may occur, requiring us to roll back or delete data during these periods. However, you will never lose access to items that you have purchased in the Founder's Packs as a result of a wipe.
We are currently planning the following wipes:
End of Alpha Wipe
Timing: Occurs at the end of Alpha testing, which begins on or before 2-28-14 Character: Your character and all progression will be wiped. Claims: Your claim(s) will be wiped. All claims will be templated so that you have blueprints of what you built. Resources and Collected Objects: All resources and collected objects will be wiped.
End of Closed Beta Wipe
Timing: Occurs at the end of Closed Beta testing, which begins on or before 3-31-14 Character: Your character and all progression will be retained. Claims: Your claim(s) will be wiped. All claims will be templated so that you have blueprints of what you built. Resources and Collected Objects: All resources and collected objects will be retained.

They aint got enough money to pay their staff let alone you or I buddy and they aint getting my money either and testing I do not do for nothing simple really!
However I bet shit loads of folks pay for this one trick pony idea to fund their game for them up front, Smed thinks he's Chris Roberts...
No chance Smed my son. This is what you will see if you try putting your grubby little hand into my wallet...Loading please wait!!!
Don't call something F2P and then try and sell me $100 worth of trash before Alpha is even available. Credability and hype going down the drain quick on this one. I have had enough "Founders" garbage over the last two years to last me a lifetime. Nut up or shutup SOE.

You're obviously not someone who is interested so the credibility and hype loss from you probably has zero net movement. You may see the 99.99 as a waste of money but it's not just for early access and is far from trash. There are a lot of creative people out there that can't wait to get in during alpha and get going on their designs, designs that will persist beyond launch. Then there's the 14 in game items, choice land plots and general support for the game.
It's nice to see some chest flexin' though, go whi'cha bad selves!
After getting ripped off with DCUO (was away Army) when they moved our accounts to the new guys running it, I was not around so now have lost my account, game I bought and paid for, ripped off so no more cash from me to SOE
As I'm excited for these types of games and I'm very interested to see SOE's attempt at making a Minecraft 2.0. I'm simply showing my support to the developers of this title by buying a Explorer's package. Oh, I'm getting some perks and some cosmetic items as show of appreciation? Sweet, I'm not one to say no to funsies.
I'm confused as to how so many people still rages over some business models in the industry, especially when it's completely optional and not required to play the game in any way. Confuzzled, confuzzled indeed.

its been around for years
some gamers had to pay for UO beta back in late 90s
I had to pay fileplanet to be part of the "exclusive" Blizzard stress test back in summer 2004

I'm personally not "paying" for anything.

This time I will vote with a 100$ donation to Smed and SOE just for their effort to try something new.
decided not to get this as its will end up being one cookie cutter class, zillions of little me clones everywhere.
Yes I realize this is in every MMO but will be way more prevalent in this game as every class can do everything.
