What I want to know is if there will be a purpose. For example - in minecraft there was non-linear progression. To kill the wizard / dragon or whatever mod you might be playing. Do that. I know they said combat would be in - but did they ever mention a purpose? Even if really basic.

From what i have seen the "purpose" is to have a chance to get your design into the eqnext game and a added cash flow to SoE...
To begin with it seems like exploring, gathering and building will be the extent of "to do" items by launch. They do mention in the landmark FAQ that the lower levels of procedurally generated content will be in Lamdmark, which is good.
A greater purpose will happen when combat, quest generation and mob scripting are in. Then you could play through the campaigns of other people and have great replayablity over time.
As far as progression it has been said that building abilities (smoothing, line tool, etc.) are gained in a progressive manner so I imagine the other systems will function the same. This is my speculation but what if the combat skill system is more open ended and allowed for free allocation? That would rock and complete the sandbox circle IMO.

Plots owned will be wiped but you can before hand save your designs to recreate it later on in a new location.
