Please, keep in mind that "building your own game" is a lot more than just decorations. You need a combat system, classes, abilities, etc. If you want to build a D&D game, the _rules_ of dnd, mechanics, abilities have to be in the system; and they will not be - for licensing reasons if for nothing else.
The only stats, abilities and behavior player characters and monsters/npcs will ever possibly have are abilities/rules of EQN. So anything you are going to try to build will play as EQN, and that's all. And that will happen, at best, years later.
Additionally, that's just their wild ideas. What they theoretically want to do. Me, as I've said in another thread, I want to do Tilda Swinton, and I think me and SOE have roughly the same chances to succeed.
You can build your own decorations, but you will not be able to build your own module like in NWN.
I'm not expecting to use systems or anything from an actual D&D game. I know I'll be using whatever they provide to us or what people end up making and selling in the market place. That's fine by me, I have faith in SoE. It's not even remotely close to a finished product and they already have a awesome start. So here's to SoE and EQ Next. I'm looking forward to it and I can't wait to see what everybody is going to be build.
If communities come together on a single server they'll be able to create their own Norrath. Cities, keeps, dungeons. Should be one awesome experience. I think a lot of people are going to be surprised with just how much you're going to be able to accomplish with EQ: Landmark.
Well.. with the livestream and them finally putting out some solid information I glean the following:
* EQ Next Landmark is not even in Alpha yet, and it will be in Alpha sometime between now and the end of February. You can bet it'll likely go Alpha very close to that deadline, whether its ready to or not. Outside of some developers and some playtests to journalists, nobody has touched the thing. It is in an early stripped down playable form, with very minimal abilities(while at the same time being fairly impressive in what they can do imo). If it goes to Release before 2015, be shocked. Figure Alpha/Beta to go through the entirety of next year.
For new tech similar to this, you will never get into or out of alpha without large scale tests. If they choose to involve us, all the better!
If they end up doing a nine month beta, i'd be shocked. There is absolutely no reason for that. They stated that in the worst case, alpha will end when close beta begins, in March. They are meeting their winter 'hands on' promise. Let's hope that they follow through with the dates.
You misunderstood. The March date is not when the Beta begins, but the latest date Alpha will START. They are not currently in Alpha. This was made perfectly clear by Dave in the Livestream with the judicious use of the term 'pre-Alpha' . That means you're looking at like at least June for the closed Beta to start and probably September for it to go open.
They basically have a stripped down Cerny Method playtest to show capabilities and promote their Kickstarter(Founders Packs). Their livestream was almost beat for beat what Storybricks was showing their Kickstarter before EQ picked them up, except with buildings, instead of the ability to design a quest. About the only thing Landmark can currently do is build buildings. The functionality to construct everything else(quests, tradeskills, items, classes, mob difficulty, combat system, blah de blah), is on the drawing board. As they tackle each issue.. the facilities to implement this stuff will make its way into Landmark for a unified development process.
But my point holds.. if you see an actual Release Date of Landmark before 2015, be shocked. They have a LOONG way to go. Everything having to do with the hype surrounding it, is to fund their Kickstarter(Founders Packs).
It is pretty clear that you are the one that misunderstands. The $20 pack says that you will receive the items 'on or before March 31' and one of those items is beta access, not alpha. Which means that beta will start on or before March 31.
Alpha will start on or before February 28.
Actually. That is not what it means at all. Any more than Smedley's claim that Landmark would go BETA by the end of the year was true, complete with a fake beta signup for both Landmark and EQ Next.
What it means in SOE-speak, is that your account will be FLAGGED to participate in Alpha or Closed Beta, on or before February 28th and March 31st, respectively. Your account will also be flagged as having received all of promised said items. Just because you get flagged for access or items, this does not mean in hard terms that it directly corollates to the game development status. I mean.. all the people who attended SOE Live will be auto-flagged for Beta.. does this mean servers are up somewhere and they're playing them the moment that happens? No. Welcome to SOE.
They'll change the game status when its ready, and if you believe wholeheartedly that its going to change by that date and its set in stone... well.. you're just Charlie Brown and they're gleefully playing Lucy as they continually pull the football away while you land on your ass. It'll pretty much happen when it happens.
As a programmer, I can tell you that while it was interesting, and I applaud them for coming up with ways to make block manipulation easier, what I saw was very basic stuff and probably 10%-20% of the game that they claim they're creating is actually in there. Maybe they'll do what they're doing with EQ1, and send it live with the core wrapper done, very little content and stuff done, with the rest of the game to be developed and released in updates as they go.
People are used to expansions being released as tiers, having your actual game be developed and created while its running, would be rip-roaring hilarious and fun to watch. But hey.. at least its FREE so it doesn't really matter.. RIGHT?

I have a feeling that you're going to be way off base, just because you're a programmer doesn't really give you insight on the inner workings of a multi-billion dollar company and how they create games. Only they actually know their time schedules and I have a feeling that we're going to see a beta before winter is over, just like they said. I don't care if we see by the end of this year or not. The game is already looking great on both fronts to me. Like I said before, I think everybody is going to be surprised once it actually gets released and we make it into the game. They're a talented team and I've got faith in them.
Originally posted by nowrnvr I did purchase the founders pack and look forward to playing it, although I do wish it was not quite so *cartoonish* makes me think of wow to some degree... I played eq1 and eq2 and this feels like they are looking to reel in a younger age group. I hope this doesn't mean everything will be easy mode? Lets face it most players who played eq1 are in their 30's ? why go to a cartoonish look .......
Because EQ1 players don't even represent 1% of the potential population for the game. They want a population in the tens of millions, not have a rounding error of a population, and that takes something new that doesn't have a bunch of grizzled burned out game fans slagging off on each and every differentiation from their religion.
Its no secret SoE are having a financial hard time, hance why they fired lots and lots of people past year. Doesnt suprise me they also crate hype for their kickstarter to raise funds.

Question for me remains will it be as good as Neverwinter ? If yes then its good if not then no way i drop a few bucks at my monitor.
Smedley is known for broken promises and big talks with nothing to show for.
Stylized graphics are the way to go, has anybody went back and checked out EQ2 recently? That is easily one of the ugliest MMOs out there today. Same with Vanguard. It's kind of like going back to old 3d games on the playstation the characters have blocks for hands, etc. Graphic fidelity/realistic graphics don't always work out together especially as the game begins to age. I still think World of Warcraft is a far better looking MMO in comparison to the likes of EQ2/Vanguard and other games that have used a similar engine. Obviously WoW isn't going to compare with newer titles like TERA and all that but that's because they're far newer in comparison.
WoW will continue to look good years to come, even if you don't like the art style. It will last longer. It's one of the reasons I'm really glad that EQ: Next and Wildstar are both going with similar styles. Not only will they age better but I think the stylized vision is a nice addition to the game worlds. It allows the artists and designers to come up with awesome stuff.

Nope.. but I do know what I saw in the Livestream. There are apps created in a week more complex than what they showed.
I would not be shocked in the least, if they weren't also looking to make a version of Landmark as a mobile app, and if that was a consideration when selecting the art design. There is really nothing there that would push a mobile device in any way and what they showed of the interface looked built with touch in mind. Flyout from the left. Big buttons that could be pressed with a finger, etc.

This is the stream from a day or two ago. It's a good watch with a lot of new information, including their plans as to what tools they're going to be giving us and what exactly that will mean for Everquest Landmark. They said that combat will be in Landmark, both PvE and PvP and a variety of other tools, including crafting items beyond new tiers of gathering tools. So we can move faster and all that jazz.
Starting around 32 minutes in you can see what he has to say about Landmark. If it works out, I can't wait. It's going to be really impressive. He mentions that we'll get all of the tools they use to create quests, access to AI, scenarios and more. I should note that it leads into - "If I don't want to build anything do I have stuff to do in the world?" Short answer is yes. You can explore the world obviously, there's things to see. Biomes, combat is going to be in. You can craft materials and sell them to crafters. Become a merchant. Chill out with people in their towns.

Well, let's think about it. If you don't build, you may walk around looking at other peoples' creations. That's a bit of fun, but how many penae can you walk through?
You can collect materials and sell them to builders, but for what reason? What do you need your ingame coins for?
"Biomes, combat is going to be in" - first of all, not at first. Secondly, "combat" is going to be extremely pointless: you don't get xp or gear from it, there are no dungeons or, well, anything - it's just bunch of trash mobs with no loot. And even if there is some resource loot, what would you sell it for?
Become a merchant - for what reason? You don't have anything to spend money in the game except for buildings/castles, and if you want a castle, you are likely to build one yourself!
Chill out with people in their towns - yeah, that's exactly what people need. Facebook, Twitter, chats and forums are clearly not enough to chill out. We are going to chill out in towns. May be we'll discuss Kardashians there.
As somebody mentioned before, I think you're filling in things by yourself. How do you know there's not going to be loot exactly? Dungeons? You don't, they haven't actually detailed how that's going to work. They also mention that PvP will be making its way into Landmark. Beyond the information they've given us you don't know much, I don't either. However at least what I've said is backed up by information that the developers have actually put out there for us.
Landmarks main feature is building your own world. If you don't like to build, I wouldn't even bother looking at the title. The fact that they're putting in combat features and almost every tool that they're using to develope EQ:Next is just a huge bonus for anybody creative enough to use those tools. If that's not enough to keep you happy nothing will be, especially if you're one of the people who are looking for a true sandbox MMO. Darkfall or any of the other current trash heap games out on the market that tout the term 'sandbox' probably won't have a leg to stand on once Landmark becomes the feature rich product that they're working to turn it into.
They haven't detailed what we'll be able to buy with our gold either. Amass a small fortune and with it go and stock up and hoard rare resources. Make a keep made out of diamond for bragging rights and then sell it on the marketplace as the rich man's home. Pointless but pretty. I think once the game is released and we get in there we'll all be surprised just how much content there's going to be for us to do... Especially if players can create it themselves.

The potential of this game is a blank slat that the community builds content for. Between their building tools and storybricks done right SOE doesn't ever have to design quests or zones they can just focus on tools and let the community do it for them. Think Neverwinter's content tools except in the open world instead of instances. The big unknown however is going to be gear. Either gear won't matter and we run other players content for enjoyment or SOE is going to have to craft the gear and make some form of rating system to place that gear into player created content. Neverwinter really backed away from giving players rewards like good gear and equivalent XP for running player created content but SOE is building the entire game around player created content so there is no other option for character advancement.
I have no idea if this game will live up to that potential or not. It's a lofty goal for sure and one with many pitfalls if not designed right.
Well, let's think about it. If you don't build, you may walk around looking at other peoples' creations. That's a bit of fun, but how many penae can you walk through?
At the time SOE confirmed that inappropriate content would be removed. That means, rather than spending their time crafting mighty penis towers, players can focus on accumulating tools and resources for building other things.
Things like Team Fortress, Day Z, DOTA etc have proven time and time again that if you give players the tools they will come up with a use for them. Landmark doesn't have to be incredibly complex to give people the basic tools to turn it into interesting things.
I am the type of person who bought SC2 for the online competitive play but there are thousands who bought it for the scenario editor and I've looked at some of the stuff they have done with it and it is pretty impressive.
Trying to say the only thing you can do with this is build stuff and look at it just isn't believable to me given everything I've seen in my gaming history.
They have stated it would be powerful enough to make your own MMORPG or run a D&D campaign. I don't know that I believe it will be but they obviously are going to try to make it much more than the grumps in this thread suggest.

agree, I'm cautiously optimistic
I think Georgeson has been drinking from the same pool as Funcom's old game director, Godager

As long as they add the ability for us to place mobs, trigger events and some sort of scripting, I could easily see how you could come up with some D&D type adventures in Landmark. A full fledged mmo...yeah probably not so much, but who knows.
Depending on how large our claims are, and whether the claim border reaches up to the sky and down to the bottom of the world, I could see how a creative person could really make full use of the space.
The other part I am interested in is how we allow access to our claims. It would be nice if there was options where people could come and visit, but not edit at all. Have edit lists, blacklists, etc.
* Pretty much everything from the time E3 absolutely embarressed themselves by giving a Kickstarter Best in Show has been PR designed to drive that Kickstarter, in order to spur investment. Whoever did that at E3 needs to be Fired, or they need to show the sizeable check SOE fed them to buy BiS. There were plenty of games that weren't vaporware that could have used that accolade.
Its not a kickstarter. Kickstarter is for initial funding while a game is still an early concept. If kickstarter is not successful, the game wont get made.
Landmark will be made regardless of how founders packs sell.
ALL of the new sandbox kickstarters that were successfully funded over the past couple of months aren't even a game yet and wont see alpha until late 2014/2015.
Somehow, I doubt we will be able to edit character stats/skills in EQNL or edit tools/weapons stats/abilities. So while people will be able to create new settings, quests and encounters the rest won't be editable. Landmark is still a game, not just an editor.

Make your own MMORPG? I think that would need an impressive amount of player input and ability (which would be very cool). As for the D&D Campaign, you only need people with attention spans long enough to participate to have that. Characters can't sit: (ooc: sits down by campfire). Hell there are even RPers in SWTOR, a game that has really nothing for RPers.

It will be interesting to see how SoE handles the player made content since each player's influence on the world is from their plot or plots they have permissions for. For instance, say I came up with a story arch campaign and wanted to put it in the game. Theoretically I would only be able to use my owned plots as a means to host it. Not a huge deal but hopefully some coalitions of FanDevs will pop up and make something like a large city, where people stitch multiple plots together. I'm hopeful as it could really be a "create your own MMO" situation for the residents.
One small point is that I hope SoE puts a certain amount of universal mob placement in so there is a sense of cohesion between plots that have player dictated content and the open world.
Georgeson said at the livestream that there was going to be an option to move your clam somewhere else if you got stuck wiyh your fantasy buildings in a SF themed neighborhood, and one continent per server would be dedicated to Fantasy building claims otherwise it was free to do anything.
Me and my wife thinks this is VERY interesting if they pull Landmark off its likely that there will be a LOT of claims trading when the game goes live and guilds try to acquire a continuous set of claims to be able to pull of bigger projects. And when the scripting and combat arrives real adventure zones might be built by guilds.
Could be a fun Sandbox game, I definitely applaud them for trying something else!.
it says right on the founder's pack buy page when they expect the game to be delivered. and even sony knows better than to promise a day and have it be off by over a year as the OP is suggesting (glares at DF developers).
I wouldnt be shocked to have SOE push it back by, say, two weeks. but they are WAY closer to release of Landmark than the OP is giving them credit for.
RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

As long as they add the ability for us to place mobs, trigger events and some sort of scripting, I could easily see how you could come up with some D&D type adventures in Landmark. A full fledged mmo...yeah probably not so much, but who knows.
Depending on how large our claims are, and whether the claim border reaches up to the sky and down to the bottom of the world, I could see how a creative person could really make full use of the space.
The other part I am interested in is how we allow access to our claims. It would be nice if there was options where people could come and visit, but not edit at all. Have edit lists, blacklists, etc.
Landmark will be playable in 3 months.
Big difference.
Somehow, I doubt we will be able to edit character stats/skills in EQNL or edit tools/weapons stats/abilities. So while people will be able to create new settings, quests and encounters the rest won't be editable. Landmark is still a game, not just an editor.
Ok so I found this kind of interesting and fitting to this discussion.

On the bottom in the tweet section here are some tweets we saw.
I found this pretty interesting.
A pretty powerful statement that they intend to give us a lot of power with what we can do with Landmark.
This is important because it shows that these are not pay to win things, just fluff perks in the long run.
