If SOE Executes With EQ Next

WarleyWarley Member UncommonPosts: 508

It'll be the end of theme park MMO's.

Honestly, a lot of people thought that EQ Next style games were the future after MMO generation 3 (DAoC, WoW, City of Heroes, etc). While big companies and investors were chasing watered down theme park MMO's with releases like Warhammer, Age of Conan and so forth a one-man team (with help from time to time) created a phenomenon at virtually no budget that has gone on to sell over 12 million copies (Minecraft).

The ironic part about this is that Minecraft had graphics that are worse than things you'd see from the late 90's. It's 'purely' about game-play.

Now, Minecraft absolutely inspired EQ Next. When you hear them talk about it you'd think they're talking about Minecraft if you didn't know it was SOE in the EQ Next videos. But, I think this also speaks volumes about Smedley and SOE. They jumped on the f2p bandwagon early and it paid off. Now, they're jumping on the sandbox MMO early and I believe that this will pay off.

I do hope that the whole monetization system of this game isn't a huge drain on wallets, though. I know I'll buy the big founder's pack, but I'm not crazy about microtransactions after that.
