Hi,

I was playing World of Warplanes yesterday and during some of the matches people got a little rude in the chat channel and you had stuff flying around, such as "F..... Noob!" and similar.

When making a polite note that perhaps we could all get along, I was told "I hope you die of cancer." by another player.

First of all. I have known people who have died of cancer and I frankly wouldn't wish that for anyone. Second, I was surprised by how much that actually hurt me.. Imagine, someone out there hopes that I die of cancer... I honestly cannot hope the same for him.. What I do hope for him is that he will live a long and happy life, that he will be loved and that he will learn to enjoy a game for what it is.. just a game.. Meant to be fun.

I dont know about you guys, but couldn't we be just help each other become a little more friendly when playing?

You run into these people every day, yet I don't know a single parent ( irl ) that doesn't think it's a great idea to prop their kid in front of the computer for a few hours so they can have some alone time.

If I told them to give them a stack of pron and a sharp knife to play with, they'd look at me like I was crazy and never want me in the same room as their kids ever again, but if I buy them a gift card for an online game I'm such a thoughtful guy!!! IMO the kid would probably grow up more well adjusted if he just looked at the porn and figured out on his own that knives can hurt people, than he will being educated on the internet to tell someone " die of cancer "

I've given up hoping that people in games will be nice and pleasant.

Just yesterday I was walking along, some guy challenged me to duel.  I said "No thank you" and kept running.  Next thing I see is a string of %@!^$3 shouted across the zone, questioning my parentage, manliness and everything else.  Sheesh.

If we want want to continue to play the games the only options I see are:

    1.  Join them - I don't intend to

    2.  Ignore them

    3.  Limit your ability to see/interact with them by a.  Joining a guild.  and/or Joining a smaller game/server.

    I suggest 2 and 3.

edit - rather I've given up with the belief that I won't see/hear these people every time I play.  I wonder why that is.  I can walk down a city block in a good or bad part of town and not have people call me out but a game, as has been pointed out many times, is not like real life, good and bad.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it is bad.

Imo there is this massive disconnect that people don't really comprehend that there is real pepole on the other end of the chat block.

They behave just like they are talking to a device.

Next time someone says I hope you die of cancer, just tell them, "I hope you survive cancer."

Most cancer survivors are much more humble and have a new appreciation for life and those around them.

I think this is one of the reasons why I prefer to solo most times these days.

I want to smell the roses.  I don't want to be a burden on your group, nor do I want to be pressured by your group.

And while I do believe there are a whole bunch (majority?) of good decent people playing MMO's, I really can't be bothered to wade through all the idiots to find you :)

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it is bad.

That's how I feel about the community in MMO's these days.  Since I don't react well to insults and taunts, (in the real world few people would dare to be so bold) I just remove myself from situations which would cause me to be subjected to the jerks out in the gaming world.

I now hang around in my small guild groups and solo if they aren't available.

I disagree. Never has anyone told me, to my face (real world), "I hope you die of cancer." or any other similar expression/curse. Never. Only from behind a computer monitor have I experienced this behavior. That is NOT the real world.

Nitth, some people like to win. At any cost. This includes psychological as well as other ways. I wonder, did you quit the game after this? If so, that player won, for whatever that "win" was worth.

I agree 100% that players should be more friendly, but competition can bring out the worst in some people. If it is a "you vs. me" game, chances are increased that there will be players where this happens.

It is unfortunate what you experienced. I wish there was a way to improve things.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

Well OP i have said it many times,i don't like the pvp atmosphere in gaming, that is why i only do PVE and hope that the PVE is designed to bring players together and help and NOT to compete against each other.

Pvp promotes cheating, anger, high blood pressure, hate and worst of all, promotes that one player loses and possibly so badly they want to quit.

I feel the same. The players I run into in MMOs do not inspire me to group with them very long, if at all.

People are just stupid, one of the many reasons why society is bs.

-THey insult on the internet because that way you cant break their teeth.

-They insult in real life because if you break their teeth they take you to court (at least in the US). You insult someone in my country and you get beaten up and the court wont get you shit because your idiotic behavior insulting people.

but ingame you should always report the idiots for being idiots, and ignore them. It is a common behavior (sadly) so just ignore them and keep reporting them.

EDIT: also i had to say this.... if some one tells me to die of cancer and i can track down that person i would enjoy beating the crap out of him and laugh at his face yelling that i already survived cancer twice. In his face.

It is very sad indeed. And internet anonymity certainly has added to that. But then, the manners are generally getting worse.

I am sorry you had such an unpleasant experience. But ... some people are just bad. Evil does exist. Despite the unfashionability of the word.

I can accept this if you mean

evil = willful ignorance (especially of our interconnectedness and of the fact that our actions do have consequences greater than we can imagine)

It's a pet topic of mine ^^ So if you don't mean that, please define. Certainly, you do not posit a supernatural horned and pitchfork wielding bat-winged entity like Old Nick?

"Evil" is an aesthetic term, connotating what the communicator feels is extremely abject, to the horizon of disbelief. Most times the term invokes a "supernatural" inference because the observer can't wrap their minds around the malefic acts, and with due reason, as often acts we might denote "evil" are demonstrative of chronic mental illness, that which we cannot understand if we are "well".

Is there empirical evil? That, too, would rely on one's perspective on their own suspension of disbelief. If you're willing to forsake every logical explanation and accept an external power (not just another sick person) intentionally negatively affects us, then evil is very real for you. I don't think there's any point in discussing that concept. One just believes in that manner what one believes.

personally I wouldnt let it affect me at all... hes the one with the issue saying in chat and allowing him to upset you allows that person to have power over you... to behave in such a way is rather immature and hes very insecure...  Maybe its bc I am a nurse and I get beat up daily by families, patients (literally at times), dr's, other nurses, administration, and my aides; most things do not bother me anymore... i guess my skin is really thick from years abuse haha...

It's of course been said before, but interacting with people through the computer lifts inhibitions... almost the way, say, alcohol does.

This can be a good thing.  People like me, for example, who are normally shy, socially awkward, and in general just bad at speaking to people face-to-face, can meet friends, communicate, and share their ideas more easily.

Or it can be a bad thing, which I've also experienced personally, in that it makes us feel anonymous and safe from repercussion if we're feeling particularly nasty and want to vent some anger on our unsuspecting online communities.  People use the feeling of anonymity to act more childishly and without restraint than they normally would.  Though I think the quote "I hope you die of cancer" is most likely coming from someone of a young age who already has fewer inhibitions (and is more susceptible to wanting to conform to the norm, which in that case was acting like a dick to everyone) I've had people who were older than myself being jerks as well.

You see the same thing on the road, too.  There are people who act like assholes with the way they drive, even if they might not normally act that way if they were, say, walking down the street.  It's the feeling of being anonymous that gives us the freedom to act in inappropriate ways.

That and the "go with the flow" mentality that websites like 4chan breed.  AKA, you should just act like a dick because everyone else is going to.

My advice to you would be to develop a thick skin when you play online games. You're going to see a lot more horrible things said in game that you ever will to your face in real life. People can hide behind their screens and act that the assholes they are with little to no repercussion. You have to tell yourself that obviously these people don't know you and are using shock to elicit a response. You see, there are so many horrible things said in these games, the more imaginative folks out there have realized that they really need to say some off-the-wall shit to get people to react. I've had people in game tell me they "hope my mother dies of aids". I actually reported them and they were suspended by Blizzard for harassment as they were able to pull the chat log. This is beyond using "foul" language and such and should be dealt with. My first reaction is always to just ignore someone, but when it gets out of hand, it must be brought up or it will never stop.

We could all be friendlier.  Ive met some terrific people in GW2 and even LoL.  We just have to sift through/have garbage tossed to our faces first.

Tbh, I have just been liberally using the ignore feature in most everywhere.  Just put them on ignore, take a deep breathe, and hug the next friendly person you come across.  Whenever some d00d gets annoying in smite or LoL, I just put them on ignore and just not deal with it.  I do that to emails and other such things as well.  Once you get the vibe that the other person is just going to spew bullcrap, just close/put it on ignore and move on.  Theres really no point in wasting your time over them.

If they pushed a bit too far before you put them on ignore, report them as well and move on.

No. That is a lost cause.

It is much easier to play solo, or in a pvp game, just treat other players as targets.

That's exactly how I feel.  If there are decent people playing MMOs, I don't see them, they must be hiding somewhere and not taking part in chats, etc.  Every single MMO out there that I've tried is just buried in these asshats that I want nothing whatsoever to do with.  Either I play solo or I don't play at all.  It's not worth my time and effort to search for the one or two decent people hiding behind a rock.
