Kids Tablets.

HulluckHulluck Member UncommonPosts: 839

Sister was looking at a Nabi 2.  Does anyone happen to have any thoughts on a good tablet for kids.  Won't drag this out.  Just curious if anyone has an opinion or experience with choosing one for children. I'm asking for my sister because she's to lazy to make an account and post here or anywhere for that matter.  Saw a lot of posts about tablets in general but can't say I've seen one come up where someone talked about kids versions.

Our local news had a segment on Leapfrog Tablets the other day. They look like they would be idea for kids as well. They have thick rubber around the edges to prevent breaking from an accidental drop(at least it looked rubber). Maybe she could look them up and see if they are what she has in mind?

Pay the money and get an iPad or mini - whatever the cheapest one you can get is (iPad 2 I think? Maybe even one used if your comfortable with it).

3 year olds pick it up and just know how to use it - I have no idea how or why, but they just do. They are built sturdy enough to handle most kid abuse (my nieces drop them, sit on them, step on them, drool on them, get whatever-that-sticky-stuff-that-kids-ooze all over them - they hold up well).

And no other tablet will have the App Store, which not only has apps for the parents, but has a fully stocked kids section, and as they grow up, you can just get apps that are age appropriate with the same piece of hardware.

Back seat of a car + ipad = pacified kids.
Kids too rowdy? Throw them an iPad with Netflix Kids, and it's better than Disney Channel.
Kid monitor? There's an app for that.

Seriously, there are lower cost options, and faster tablets, and tablets made just for kids, but for this purpose, nothing will beat out an iPad.

Are they cost effective compared to just a normal tablet or a kindle fire for like $150.00?

That's the thing that held me back from getting one of those leapfrog ones or something.  The games are like 5-10 a piece and it isn't very cost effective in the long run. Leapfrog's are about $8.00 an APP.

After a bit of research seems the Nabi 2 can get normal Play apps on, so it might be a good bet for young children.  I know mine (4 and 6) just use my wife's phone and Ipad.  I bought a simple android tablet for them a year and a half ago for about $80.00 that they used extensively for a while.

Thanks I'll point her to this thread later on in the day and let her read it.  That was fast response time btw.   If she wants to know more or anything specific I'll make her create an account and post in the thread. :S Hate trying to be a relay person in a conversation.

I have no idea about your first question.   These girls are about the same age as yours. They were looking and she asked me the other day and I just gave her a dumb look. I thought it was pricey for a kids tablet personally but didn't say much cause I didn't know anything about it or tablets in general.

If I had the money (or fewer nieces & nephews, 3 of each!) I would have sprung for ipads or nexus tablets, but I opted for kindle fire HD's.

Have all the features they need for reading, some games, watching shows and it gives them a chance to have their own bit of tech. They'll get full featured tablets when they're older (oldest is 5).

Kindle Fire HD would be a great choice for Kids and wont break the bank. IMO kids that age do not need a full feature tablet like older kids & adults do.

It depends on the age range you are buying this for.  The Leapfrogs might be good for their durability and apps targeted for a 0-10 age range.  After that, I would probably go with something like a Kindle tablet or Android tablet like the Nexus.  I remember hearing something about parental controls on a tablet which lets you control how much time they can use it.  I think it was the Kindle.

I bought my 2 boys each a Nabi tablet last year. It has the power equivalent to a Kindle Fire at the time, the Nabi app store is pretty much shit, but you can access the Amazon App Store fairly easily. Depending on the age of the kids the Nabi is encased in thick plastic and has a rubber barrier around that, so if they are very young, I would recommend it. If they are 6+ I would say just bite the bullet and buy a kindle fire or iPad as they will grow into that and it will not become obsolete to them as quickly as a Nabi would.

That's the price range I was expecting when she told me they were looking at tablets for the kids.  I saw the price of the NABI 2 and shook my head. I've personally never used a tablet, or for that matter never really had a use for one.  Won't surprise me if it ends up in a pool, bath tub, toilet, or just gets thrashed fairly quick like. Regardless of how sturdy it is.

Apple, never thought I'd say this, I think that wouldn't be a bad choice because they all could use it then.  Then again I think whatever they get is going to have a very short life span.

In general to everyone who posted, Thank You. I was just curious what others thought since they were talking about it.  She honestly should be asking around and not me.  I just know the people at our local Best Buy basically read the box and that was the extent of their knowledge.

Think the Hudl is probably one worth looking into, as its a family orientated tablet, and its one of the cheapest on the market, though might want to google it for details image

for price - android hardware is a winner

    for apps,

especially apps that make use of the tablet dimensions (and not a "blown up" phone app)

IOS app store is no contest for tablet sized games / digitized board games

I don't see a family section on Googleplay  (but maybe I'm wrong)

    https://play.google.com/store/apps?hl=en

    Itunes has one

    https://itunes.apple.com/us/genre/ios-games-family/id7009?mt=8
