I dun get why all of you use cheesy as if it's a bad thing.

I agree. They could easily just give them away to the first 5000 people, but this is actually very smart. Giving the games away gives no publicity, and even for those who dislike the idea and start bashing it, bad publicity is better than no publicity at all. Those videos will be all over youtube and its free advertising.
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

Originally posted by RPGForever The link is now live I tried several times but did not work until now. And after seeing this LOL is the most weird thing I have ever seen as a MMO offer they want me to send a video of myself reading in a public site the pledging of total loyalty to this game and perhaps only perhaps I can have the chance to win a free copy of the game. LOL I cannot stop laughing. And how will they monitor users to avoid playing other games?
It's a joke. This isn't serious, it is a advertising gimmick is all, they don't really expect people to do as it says.
C'mon people, be real.
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
Bribing people to "show loyalty" to their game and speak out against subscriptions?
Seriously?
How about giving a 1 week free trial to people to really get in, check it out, kick the tires, and let the game sell itself that way?
They have done that several times now. The idea is to get them in and use the cash shop to support the game I would guess. A weekend trial isn't going to do anything.

Yeah, theres really nothing quite like overwhelming bad word of mouth on forums and other social media to advertise your product.

There's no such thing as bad publicity except your own obituary.

Problem is that anyone who is enough of a GW2 fanboy to actually want to do this probably owns the game already. It would actually be kind of funny if they banned them if they caught them playing another MMO against their "oath" though.

This is such a load of crap. Bad publicity can sink companies.

Indeed. Tell Ratner there is no such thing as bad publicity.
Well timed Ad Campaign, combined with a deep discount to drive a feeding frenzy.
I'm surprised it doesn't include a bonus "boost" for new players.

As if the ad doesn't reflect exactly what people outside of any hobby think of someone speaking of their hobby, whatever that hobby is.
WoW has publicly announced millions of falling subs these past few years so there are consistent sales to keep revenue up what's GW2 reason? Also WoW is about to hit its 9th birthday if it already hasn't and GW2 isn't out of nappies yet.

The same as WoW, to drive more revenue. It's obviously working. People are talking about it, even those that don't like it. That's successful marketing. More mmos should try it.
Remember the Rift Azeroth ad? It stirred up talk and kept Rift in the discussion. That is crucial to driving revenue. What MMOs keep themselves in the news in some manner: WoW, GW2, EVE, and Rift.
I won't go so far as to say there is no such thing as bad publicity, because a company caught engaging in shady ethics, scams, or illegal activity can fall under that. But obnoxious, outlandish, or controversial isn't bad publicity. Every time someone bumps the thread with a comment the publicity factor goes up. ANet is, I'm sure, happy that the haters are hating on it, because it keeps them in the discussion.
What MMOs are people talking about today, this week, and more importantly week after week after week. You will see MMOs released and people will talk about them for a 3 or 4 months until they slowly fall off the radar. Publicity keeps them on that radar. Notice how EVE, WoW, GW2, and SWTOR always seem to pop up in threads week after week? It's not a mistake.
well said and people here seem to not understand how marketing works in this industry or any commercial business. You have to spend money to make money as the old saying goes and spending a lot of money on advertising and keeping your game or product in the lime light good or bad is going to have the curious try it out and purchase it and have others spend money returning on gems. People here also do not understand its not thousands of dollars to advertise on these sites either its much cheaper and all it takes is a few people to buy the box or a gem package and the advertising pays for itself.
Not even sure why everyone is hating on wow or GW2 both are good games in their own ways and there isnt nothing at all wrong with either direction.

I understand the reason for this campaign is to generate publicity and boost revenue and good luck to Arenanet personally I find it a bit distasteful but that's me, but I was trying to put the argument by Gaia that if Arenanet are so desperate so must Blizzard which is ridiculous comparing the two games and strategies, ones a game with known falling numbers in millions after years of raking in the cash in the billions. The other is a game barely a year old that's losing revenue quarter on quarter and triumphantly told the world it was going after WoW numbers and would prove the b2p model to be the real deal, don't forget the sub ripping you off arguments as well. I know which company looks the like the desperate one and they are not based in Irvine, California.

Arenanet is a company with around 300 people.
CCP is a company with 600 people.
Arenanet is making more revenue per quarter than CCP.
GW2 revenue in 15 months was the same as the revenue of EVE online for the first 5 or 6 years combined.
Arenanet isn't desperate neither is Blizzard. Promotions, contests, ads is normal business.
When we hear about Arenanet laying off people, then you know something is wrong.
Blizzard by the way had a sizable layoff in February 2012.
http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/29/blizzard-announces-layoffs-of-600-employees-worldwide/
600 people. That is the size of CCP and twice the size of Arenanet. I bet most of those positions were costumer support.
Desperate companies don't waste time until they start reducing their employee numbers.
