Characters have a weight limit so it could be tricky. You also drop items upon death. So it is probably wiser to use a fast and more efficient way of travelling…such as a carriage! In fact the game allows you to hire a NPC carriage to transport goods from a town to another. However you need to have these 2 towns connected first. And while I did not get to try it myself, players are supposedly able to PK NPCs. Meaning some ill-intended player could very well attack the carriage full of iron you hired.

Yes, almost too amazing. Unfortunately, I've followed the development of too many MMOs where such innovative and meaningful ideas are scrapped in the beta phase due to player feedback (the ability to permanently kill companions in SWTOR being the latest example). It's astonishing how many people do actually want a completely risk-free in inconsequential gameplay environment.
I do hope that this stays in, of course, but I would not necessarily count on it.
