Saw this picture and immediately thought of many threads/discussions on this site, which can tend to break at least several of the commandments in a single post.
I wonder how much the amount of posts on these forums would drop by if people actually adhered to these...

I see what you did there!
But nope. I've assumed nothing, actually.
I'm wondering how much it would... which could very well be "not at all".
Nice!
Actually, he said "i wonder," which is not the same as assuming. Moreover, your assertion that no logical connection exists is illogical. There is a clear connection, but as he was not assuming, but questioning, the point is moot.
Edit: awesome list

Yeah I rather enjoyed reading those.
Your forum avatar is epic, by the way lol. Took me a moment to realize what I was looking at lol.
Bingo!
Yeah. If I were asked to guess, I'd say it would be a notable amount, considering how much back and forth goes on with people posting various logical fallacies, others' responses to them, etc - all of which is noise, stagnating the discussion and adding nothing to it.
However, because I can't say for certain it would have an effect, or how much, it remains a curiosity.
I did get a chuckle out of Rockniss's post though; well-played.

I would just like to see a moderated debate on some of the topics that routinely come up. The rules wouldn't necessarily have to be followed, but following them would certainly be a way to gain points and win.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
And yet...

Lol thanks man! This avatar is one of my prouder accomplishments of my forum adventures.
Anyway, I enjoy learning about logical fallacies. I was glad to see this post!
That would be interesting, actually.
Yeah, I think there'd have to be a motivation to keep it honest. In the debates I've seen, even the formatted ones, people still resorted to fallacies for a lot of their arguments.
There is that occasional column from the staff where each person takes a side and they sorta have a mini-debate, basically as a setup for further discussion among members. Bill Murphy is one of those people, and I'm completely blanking on the other person's name (sorry other person!).
But again, that seems (to me anyway) to be more a catalyst for further discussion/debate. Not so much a debate intended to be "won". Could be cool to see it elevated to something like that, though.
Just be warned. If they didn't already, they may start jumping out at you even more now lol.
You can buy a poster of something very similar...

There are certain queer times and occasions in this strange mixed affair we call life when a man takes this whole universe for a vast practical joke, though the wit thereof he but dimly discerns, and more than suspects that the joke is at nobody's expense but his own.
-- Herman Melville
There should be a mandatory course in schools about devising proper logical arguments and critical thinking to help avoid this kind of stuff. It would also help people see through a lot of common political tactics and be extremely useful in many areas of life.
Uhm? Is there supposed to be a gotcha moment here or am I missing something?
I'm guilty of so many of those things, despite my best efforts not to. I guess if it wasn't in our nature to use those "tactics" they wouldn't be so common. I think anyone that posts a lot could probably use that printed out and put someone that's hard to miss
That was a nice read. I enjoyed reading that.
I am guilty of violating all of what was written there...not all at once though but still, I am ashamed. -_-
If you took everything on that list... and applied it to a post.. you would literally have no discussion about a game... ever..
