Dogfighting Module Delayed....

BrenelaelBrenelael Member UncommonPosts: 3,821

Well as expected by the Community the Dogfighting Module has been delayed to allow them to build a custom back end that will be also used for the Persistent Universe later. Here is the full explanation from Chris Roberts himself.

Disappointing but as I said the Community was expecting this delay for the most part.

Well in order to do that they would have to use the CryEngine's built in Net Code. This would mean they would essentially have a build they would have to throw out when their own Net Code is implemented because the internal Net Code in CryEngine is only set up for limited lobby based multiplayer. This won't be nearly good enough for the Persistent Universe later or even the level of Multiplayer needed for the full Dogfighting Module. Doing this would waste valuable resources that could be used more productively.

While I agree that the Module should be delayed it is still disappointing to say the least. The Community was expecting this however so the blow isn't nearly as harsh as it could have been.

I can see 2 possible reasons for this:

    1. Elite dangerous is a lot better then SC and they don;t want  elite VS  sc threads

    2. Is more lucrative to design more ships and sell them to people for hundreds of bucks then to make the Dogfighting module and people beeing able to see the value/capability of the ships

Still... even the "Singleplayer" SQ42 is going to have drop-in type Multiplayer Coop. This means that they would have to build it without Net Code. This would mean they would have to either:

    1. Build it with the capability to incorporate the Net Code later. (Something that would be very hard to do considering that they don't know what that code will entail yet.)
    2. They would have to build a disposable build that would be thrown out later. (Something that would waste valuable resources and time that would be better spent on doing it right the first time.)

I for one would rather see it delayed and done right from the first build. As I said I'm just as disappointed as anyone else but being a programmer myself I understand why they are delaying. It will mean a better game for all in the end.

Ummm.... Why does everything have to have some huge conspiracy plot behind it for you? Maybe... just maybe they are delaying to make it a better experience for all? I know it's a hard concept to grab but maybe they are just being honest with us. They are not EA or Activision you know.

Edit: It's also worth noting that not only is Mr. Roberts a huge Elite fan and pledger to that project he also personally posted his support for the project and encouraged other SC fans to pledge their support as well during Elite's Kickstarter on RSI.com. Chris Roberts wants to see Elite succeed as much as the most die hard Elite fan as he himself has admitted to being a hopeless Elite fanboy.  Mr. Roberts and SC are not Elite's enemy... In fact he's done as much as he can to support Elite and has encouraged other SC fans to do the same.

    ...And so it begins.

Expect a lot more of this.

I like the "optimism" that seems to start to flourish in this thread and was VERY sure that outside discusions like these would pop up. Pretty sure this will be a grate carrot for the "EVE" players first poor attept for a "I told you so".

Like Chris said, if you even care and read what he wrote about this decision.

"I feel that the Dogfighting module, especially with Star Citizen’s greatly increased profile, needs to be more polished than a typical “alpha”. There are a lot of eyes on the game, and more than a few people wanting us to fail. Because Dogfighting is the first module that will involve significant gameplay, it has to be good – I don’t feel that we will get a pass just because it is pre-pre alpha."

So what? He wants to perfect it to what he really wants before any happy short sighted critics managed to see it for what later wont even be there.

Sure its kind of sad to hear that it got delayed, maybe hoped for a patch where you could at least test fly you ships, but I still support this 100%.

Bllizzard for example have made many changes behind there doors in there projects. The only diffrence is we mostly dont know a single thing about that. And thats the diffrence, with SC we get to follow every step, all changes made to make this as good as it possebly can get. And because of this we can get informed when delays are made. But the benefit is we know everything (almost), and even have the possibility to give our views of how stuff should/could work and how we want to play this game in the end. Makes you more kind of avoid a swing in the dark hoping to hit what pepole really likes to do, like many other closed companies have to deal with.

So, "bad" information like this kind of delay, surely has many aspects of good to it.

That has been the case both ways, Braben and Frontier Developments are supportive of Roberts and SC.

Me, I am on Team Elite, because I was 13 when I first played it and it was my first computer "world" experience, but I hold no ill will towards SC. I hope both will be a success, I see them as eventually gaining different audiences although there will be some crossover.

However between kickstarter and the amount invested by folks and the youthful memories of both games there will be emotional investment of a level not before seen, hell people only had $50 invested in GW2 and that was crazy, here we have people investing high hundreds buying ships and planet naming rights for their nostalgic teenage game of choice.

SC has a much larger base but Elite will out first, there will be fireworks.

I backed both games quite generously, especially SC. Elite was my favorite game on ZX Spectrum.

I HOPE that both games will succeed. Is just annoying that SC choses to focus on launching more ships instead of programing part. Is surprisingly that they haven't done so far the networking code  which makes me wonder how they tested the rest of functionality.

Maybe they should add a stretch goal to build the back end net code? I kid.

Delays happen, and I agree with the assessment, this title is under the microscope and people do want to be able to point at any failure just to say I told you so, best if anything released is top quality.

They will have a live stream on Friday of 2 hours during which they will show a free for all in the dogfighting module with the devs fighting each other, so we will get a video of the thing in action at least :D

The delay was quite a given by now, the fact it is quite significant ("a couple of months), not so much.

Getting a real time video of the module in action, however, should help to extinguish the flames, assuming it is good stuff.

I'm in similar mindset only I have fond memories of playing Wing Commander for hours on end when I was younger so it makes me lean a little more towards SC. I remember Elite and thought it was a great game. For me though WC was a turning point in the way Space Sims were made. I had played many Space combat sims up to that point but they were a very non-emotional experience. There was nothing to remind you of why you were out there fighting really. WC was the first game to make you feel like you were really part of something larger... A desperate struggle to save Humanity from a relentless enemy. It was the narrative style that made WC stand out among it's peers for me at least. This is why I chose SC but as I've said many times I'm still watching Elite with great interest. I will most likely play and enjoy both games.

You can't judge Elite: Dangerous by just classic Elite, because it had 2 massively expanded sequels.
