As the title says I'm looking for a game with a great story. It can be an mmo or a single player game, but if it is an mmo I'd like to have the option to progress through the story on my own if possible (though I don't mind grouping, I just don't have a lot of time for grouping and I may need to leave on a whim so I wouldn't want to do that to a group).
I'm looking for something in the fantasy genre or sci fi genre (not mass effect).
Anyone know of any games with a great story out there?
I currently play GW2.

I actually am going to try out Black Flag, I have a free game code for it, but am waiting for it to be re-sent because the 1st card I had was illegible.
I played SWTOR up until it went F2P, got 2 a few characters to max level at the time and I did enjoy the story. I am not sure if they have expanded the story too much though since it went F2P and they have made some expansions. I really liked the parts where I could solo the whole story. Do you have to do the group missions to continue in the main storyline (I cant remember, or it might have been updated).
Thanks for the suggestions.
Try Skyrim.
Some of the class stories in SW:TOR are pretty good.
Imperial Agent, Jedi Knight and both Siths are probably the best.
All class story quests can be soloed as well, although you will need to do some standard questing to fill in the gaps between class quests especially after level 40.
But, some world story arcs are good too.
All of the one-off quests are standard bleh.
On the single side, as much as I loathe those filthy naughty dogs and what they did to the adventure genre, if you don't mind the total lack of any freedom (just watching the movie) the Uncharted series, or the Last of Us has a pretty good story. Same goes to the first Alan Wake (without the dlc's, and definitely without that lame american nightmare)
(or, if you don't stick to the new era, there's the Ultima series Or from the not-that-ancient times Ragnar's TLJ and Dreamfall)
Among mmo's, as mentioned above, TOR has a few well-written storylines (but you already played to 50, there's not much addition above that). LotRO has a well-written story (not a surprise) but it needs some spending if you go in as a new free player.
TSW is awesome, but it's not sci-fi nor fantasy, so probably not a match. Maybe AoC? Great story, you can play it on your own, fun mechanics, pretty decent f2p model.
edit: my bad, if you ment under single games only rpg's then maybe the first Witcher.
The Secret World... not much different stories per class as in SWTOR but ... main story is great
The Last of Us
Uncharted Series
Beyond Two Souls
Xenogears and Xenosaga if your willing to play older games. Those two games in my opinion has the best story
Final Fantasy XIV ARR and SWTOR for mmorpgs
Batman Arkham Series
Tomb Raider (the new one)
Elder Scrolls and Fallout
Dragons Dogma
Metal Gear Solid Series, this games story is amazing, its my second favorite from xenogears
Borderlands 1 and 2
And why not Mass Effect, its easily one of the best rpg shooters with an epic story out there.
It can be any type of game not just rpg.
I definitely appreciate your suggestions. I have actually wanted to try the Uncharted series, but I can only play on PC at the moment and I think those are only on Playstation.
I have been thinking about trying out either AoC or LoTRO - I don't mind paying a little bit to help support them, I wasn't sure which one would have a better story though - and if at higher levels do I need to be in a group to complete the story.
Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before.
Edgar Allan Poe
good list
can also add the Assassin Creed games too, they had a very nice story (especially the ones with Ezio in them)
maybe the OP already played the mass effect games
I would stay away from any mmorpg if you are looking for a good story as well.

KOTOR 1 and 2. I recently played them again back to back and it was very enjoyable.
Some people really like the FF stories. Lost Odyssey was ok.
I liked the Deus Ex: Human Revolution a lot.
I think a replay or first play KOTOR is your best bet though.

Yep, PS only. Well, if I'd want to jab a bit into the naughty dog fans I'd suggest just simply watch a youtube playthrough, since it's almost the same, you just spare yourself from some lame combat parts but of course I don't say that. Not at all. Khm.
(it's a shame that it almost won the best adventure game award... not even a game. But the story is great. I lol'd when heard they want to make a movie from it. For what reason? The movie is already there, ok, true, it stopped a lot by some QTE button-mashing, but still )
On the AoC - LotRO part, in structure they're alike, with one main story for your character and lots of additional side stories in the world. AoC would be cheaper to play, in LotRO you need to buy some questpacks to avoid grindig levels. Which has the better story? Both are great, so I couldn't really tell... I guess it depends which lore you like better (Howard or Tolkien).
If it matters, AoC's story is shorter than LotRO's book quest line. AoC's personal storyline is solo, in LotRO you couldn't play it without a group in the past, at the more important parts of the story you needed the help of your fellows. It was changed with the f2p, now you can play those quests too in solo mode (you get a huge buff), but it's still easier in a group.
These are all single-player games; some of them are old enough that you'd have to play them on emulator unless you had a previous-gen console. The older PC ones you'd need old direct-X and I've never had luck getting the sound to work on Win 95 emulation or DOS emulation, though I'm sure somebody on teh interwebs knows how to make it work.
Vagrant Story (PS1) Fantasy, historical/political flavor. Unusually pretty art for a PS1 game. RPG with a single playable character, armor crafting, new game+, gazette
Sanitarium (PC) Psychological drama with some surrealism thrown in. I suspect this one was rated M. There's no sex in it at all but it definitely tries to screw with your mind.
Okami (PS2) Fantasy with a Japanese folk tale flavor. Kid-safe but interesting and fun for adults. Plays similar to the Kingdom Hearts series but no dumb ducks and mice.
StarCraft 1 - singleplayer campaign (PC) Army politics for the humans, but even more interesting was being a Zerg overmind.
Tender Loving Care (PC) was rated M for sexual content, but really brainy for pr0n
Final Fantasy Series - If you like games with story, you undoubtedly already know about these
