so i haven't really played any mmos in a few months and just over the holidays here i had some time to kill and got the itch to try something new.....except there is nothing new....and i mean absolutely nothing.
Seriously wtf? don't 90% of mmos always launch in November (right before the holidays)?
Elder Scrolls, Arch Age, EQN, Wildstar....not one of them launched at peak consumer months?
this is just a crap year for mmos. now i have to spend the holidays trolling forms of games i used to play, making nostalgic posts about why the game was better before X patch dumbed everything down.....

Pretty much.
I really want to play something... and I don't have anything.
Out of despair I downloaded 3 MMOs I used to play (GW2, WoW and SWTOR), and quit all of them again an hour in.
Need something new
I don't think one of those was even set to release in 2013?
Now, If you want to try something new I can suggest Runescape 3 . It's the newer version of one of the oldest MMORPG's out there. There is tons of content even in free to play and they have worked hard to start really bringing their game visually up to par.
If you have never played or have not seen the game in the last few years... It is a very different game from what it used to be. And, as always my offer to help any new players get started off on the right foot stands.

I can partially agree to the truthfulness below the supposed sarcastic tone, lol.
What exactly was the turning point that made it runescape 3? was it the move to html 5 (which is still in beta). Was it the new interface system, or the evolution of combat update? It's really hard to say and yeah the deadlines they set are arbitrary. It could be better if they just released stuff when it was really ready.
But hey, it is an MMORPG build over 14 years (when you count early experimentation with the first incarnation devious mud). And, you remember that gawd awful tutorial they had? They fixed it recently.... whole new tutorial. You start off on Ashdale island, nail down the basics of the controls for movement and interaction in short first quest. Get a funny little reward, then into the mainland where you can go off on your own or continue with the guided mode that takes you through a few quests which will teach you slowly virtually everything and are very rewarding.
It's not so front loaded now. Your not information shot gunned by it any more. I have to say they did a really good job on fixing the entry level of the game. And think of it this way. Yes, they continually try new things. But at least they don't sit still and make us wait years for the simplest updates. They are actually trying. Their not satisfied to just keep who they already have and placate their players base into a small elitist community like many MMO's do when they reach this mark.
They make mistakes. they are only human. But they try, and they do that all in. And, things really are starting to look impressive.
Don't even get on an old account if you try it out. Make an entirely new one...Because with the new tutorial, revamped quests, fully orchestrated musical scores, and new graphics engine...It is a new game, and a great time to be a newb.
I feel the same way though and I own the consoles. I don't wanna play a first person shooter all christmas long. I"m not asking for people to release unfinished products, I just wish some company would have had the foresight to plan ahead and capitalize on the total lack of anything mmo related coming out for the holidays.
Oh well, I guess I'll be forced to argue with 13 year old douches who have 10 hours a day to play. Calling me names because I don't have a positive kill to death ratio every match. Sad but true.
Just to question the philosophy. Army of Socrates.
Your the exeption to the rule then. Most people if they buy one console (let alone two) + some games for it. Would not have money left to buy an other game for the holiday. Most of them would most likely be playing on there new console the whole holidays even if they had the money. While they would have had increased sales, I still think they will see a better increase nearing summer.
That I have found, is a very common deterrent. Being browser based does mean that it naturally takes a hit to things like graphical fidelity. And, may often have latency issues. But Jagex has worked extremely hard to bust down the common definition of what it means to be browser based. They have pushed java to it's absolute extreme. The only reason they went to HTML5 is because after 11 years they had finally hit the ceiling of what java was capable of doing for the game.
The HTML5 version (especially on a good gaming machine) looks farrrr better then the java version on the whole. looks at these comparisons between desert scenery of both Runescape 3 HTML5 and EQ Next:
The aesthetic style is different but the level of graphical fidelity is virtually the same. Look to both for the lighting, the shadows, the actual textures, the color range, atmospheric effect, the attention to detail...Runescape has always been characteristic with it's representation of the world and things in it. But, these are almost on the same level with each other. And, Ashdale ( their newest edition, and where you will start with a new account) looks even better then this.

I can give you some good starter gear that will suit you well up into the 30-ish tier bracket, so you don't have to worry about it and just have fun playing (magic, ranging, melee gear, or even all 3). And, offer help on anything you may get stuck on in-game.
To reply to the question in the title...
Developing an MMO takes about 5ish years. Do you know what happened 5 years ago?
5 years ago was the start of the economic crisis. The crisis caused many game developments to halt, few projects got sped up to get them out and making money faster.
I didn't really notice this until it was pointed out, but yeah. This has been an extremely dissipointing quarter for online gaming. We've had multiple push backs and no real title (either MMO or single player) to hang our hats on for the winter break.
I know 2008 was a rough year for the economy, but this is starting to get old. Hoping that the extra waiting makes up for a good EQN:L and Wildstar that I'll be playing for years to come.
But I'm not holding my breath.
I was off the forum most of the year. What are a few of the recent titles?
Only one that comes to mind is Neverwinter.
Hasn't been a slow year at all.
Smite, War of Mercenaries, Champions of Regnum, Empire Universe 3, Defiance, Ecol Tactics Online, Panzar, Hammers End, Dust 514, Eternal Saga, Scarlet Blade, Age of Wushu, Darkfall, Marvel heroes, Neverwinter, Tantra, Firefall, Fortuna, Final Fantasy 14, Eldevin...

That actually looks like a healthy amount of games to me. So why does it seem that a lot of people feel like nothing came out this year?
So, the argument is that nothing 'good' came out this year?
You know what I noticed in a lot of the games I play that i have considered to be good all a long (many of them by companies that have other projects not set to release this year but next year). That a lot of them are refocusing. They are going introspective. Making massive updates, and generally synching things down with what they got.
Maybe it has not been a year for big new great titles, because it has been a year for a shift in perspective? that maybe those titles already exist if they just had a little work done on them?
For you they're crap. Others may enjoy them. I'm sure there's games you like that I and others would consider crap.
