Any activity can be considered grinding if it's repetitive.  Some people like to grind and others don't.  :-)  Usually MMOs all become a grind in some way because they try to keep people happy, playing ,and paying.  Many times people will do things that are no longer fun because they bring comfort.  They are something that's familiar.  Grinding can also be caused by rushing to the the end game.  If you don't enjoy the leveling process the rest of the game can be tedious.  I find questing through theme parks can be a grind now.  It wasn't when I first played WoW because it was new.  Now it is no different in most cases to grinding mobs randomly and can in fact be a worse grind.  The end game grind is the worst of all.  I never understand why anyone who likes RPGs would want to play most of the time at the top level.  The RPG level system was invented to make you feel like you are progressing.  Getting to the endgame as fast as possible defeats the purpose and increases the grind.  Personally I think I'd rather explore and grind on different mobs than to follow a quest line grind.  Sometimes quests can be fun though.
