Usually I tend to have always the same names, I created a set of chars and always sort of reproduce them.

Different in each game but mostly because I morph to the game. And yes, I've been mistaken for others a couple times because of a name.

Depends if I start the game on my own or if friends and guildies are playing it too.

If I start on my own it doesn't matter what I'm called since no one knows me, otherwise yes, I use similar names, I will even pick a similar class, it's just convenient.

I use differing names in each MMO I have played. If I can, I'll try to get a name that is somewhat lore following. An Elf named "Dorkus" does not fit very well, in my opinion. WoW was so bad that I started naming all my characters staring with a "Q" because so many names were taken. Soon, my friends would see a character with a name starting with "Q" that they would ask that player if they were me. Most of the time, it was :)

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

Diff name every game, and they are usually terrible names.  I stopped caring about cool  names, or good names long ago.  I tend to go with the same theme though.  fecal matter always makes for great names.
  • faidedfaided Member UncommonPosts: 111

To the poll itself I went with the first option.  Although my name has changed over the years, the nick for this account as an example is not one I use anymore.  Over the years I have used many names while always sticking to a specific one for an undetermined amount of time.

I have been mistaken before.  I don't remember the name or the nick b/c it wasn't my name.  It was a stolen name, or one similar looking to the persons name.  I generally stick to full loot PvP MMO's so the aspect of spying or social engineering has come up before,  fun stuff.

same name in every game. I like running into people I've met in past games and I have nothing to hide as far as what I've done or said.

Always same name or Varient of this name :)

Deciding factors are mostly their naming conventions.

Fact is still games dont allow surnames !!

    So names are always varient on Quazal {m} or Quazaline {F}

For me the ingame characters are my identity if you know me in one game then you may know me in another why waste time rebuilding friendships across mmo/genres when it will work with just a name

This post is all my opinion, but I welcome debate on anything i have put, however, personal slander / name calling belongs in game where of course you're welcome to call me names im often found lounging about in EvE online.

I like that people have a convention for naming all their characters (like the guy above who uses a "Q" or a friend of mine who always uses double "i" somewhere in the name). Now I try to start all my character names with the same three letters so people can spot me on my alts.

usually the same, though by now have a handful to choose from, if my "main name" should be taken - usually using the names depending on the class Ive made

Same here. I have a small stable of names I reuse across the games.

The names also correspond to roles. When I return to a game, I glance at the levels and names of the characters, which usually helps me remember why I stopped playing.

I do the same thing. Same names, each name corresponds to a particular archetype, additionally most of my names start with a K. The ones that don't start with K then star with Ere. I also have surnames for all of my characters, I just don't get to use them all that often.

I have a pool of 5-6 names that I use in any game I play....just feels right

  • GrixxittGrixxitt Member UncommonPosts: 545

I've been The Grixxitt in every game I've played since UO circa 1999 or so, no reason to stop now.

It's fun when I'm in a new game and bump into people I gamed with over a decade ago. Doubt this would be possible if everyone started out anonymous.

The above is my personal opinion. Anyone displaying a view contrary to my opinion is obviously WRONG and should STHU. (neener neener)

I am lazy so often use the same name. 9 years ago I tended to use my forum name (might have been about the last time I used that name). I played a race or something that was called common Human. So that is how I got that name. I started playing an other game where the name Coman did not fit. So made a new name up and been using that for the last 8-9 years. I only used 3 different online names (and variations of them for alts, or in some cases auto generated name if a game allows it) in the last 15 years.

I have a few female and male names I often use.

It aaaallll started 20 years ago....but I'm not going to tell the whole story :-)

Same stable of names, these are from some of my favorite books.

Fitz is one of my favorites anyone who has read the books connected with this name will know who he is.

My main character is Daerthe.  He's a role playing character and has a huge back story.  Second up is Rarne.  I have about eight more regulars and I continue to develop them as characters often using game settings to help their story along.

As I get older I find myself caring less and less what my character's name is.  I'm at the point where the random button is fine by me.  If there is no random button I piano my hand across the keyboard.

I try to choose the same name in all the games I play, if possible.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

  • shalissarshalissar Member UncommonPosts: 509
I've been using a four letter nickname since forever because 99.9% of the time I can use it. It's short, sweet, and goes with most surnames if I'm allowed to have one.  I use different ones if there's some specific cultural background that I want to incorporate into my roleplay.
  • TholdarianTholdarian Member UncommonPosts: 67

Also using a rather small collection of names, some used more often than others, most of them are variations of names I got from 'name generators' (yes, I am lazy and uninventive when it gets to names); just added personal twists to make the names sound decent to actually pronounce in real life (dunno, I like it if you can actually SAY a name rather than it being only cool on the paper/written).

So, yea, some names come, some names go, about 3 names stayed over the years, but it's always in movement.

  • AldersAlders Member RarePosts: 2,207

Always the same 3 or 4 letter name if possible.

I've always hated long names going back to my old school days of having to type out people's names quickly to invite them to group/party.  The shorter the better!

  • 5Luck5Luck Member UncommonPosts: 218

I have about 5-6 handels for online games I pretty much stick to.

I mostly only use one for forums but in game 5-6.

They are usualy not taken even in older games with unique name restictions and over the years these are names Ive setteled with.

If a game has a special circumstance or a particular group of players I will make a name in a way to seem (at least to me) to show I am a part of that circumstance or group. IE If the game has pre trammel rules or is kin to pre trammel rules I might go with trammie or make a guild called  "the society for the trammelization of(insert world name) ya know I like to make it fun or funny or "of group". But my main is usaly one of 3 names and my alts of the the other 5-6 names.
