Can an Alfari group up with a Mercian ?

Can my son make an Alfari and run his character to where ever my Mercian starts at (or vise versa) and then the two of us play together?

    the race are only for the looks. you can enter every NPC city, no matter what race. With a portal shard ( you spawn with one ) you can summon 1 friend to your location
