I've tried it, and frankly it's pretty fun, and yes, incredibly innovative! I've racked up about ten or so beta invites to the game, the only thing I don't like about it is the communication aspect, however there are various google+ groups dedicated to each faction. (Even though I personally detest G+.) I also enjoy that it doesn't technically take money to advance, just the ability to walk, and have the interweb on your phone I suppose, I guess it also depends on your proximity in relation to the general population, if you live out in the middle of no-where, I doubt you'll get very far when it comes to portals, etc. However, that can't even really be said, as it seems to be random sometimes on how they actually place portals.
In short, I enjoy it.

Not worth messing with. Its only "okayish" if you happened to be a college student and are bored since most colleges are portals themselves. It requires you to spend a lot of time and gas going to places that you usually wouldn't have any interest in going. A library, a post office, another library, another post office, etc. Google also uses it to track your movements.
Highly recommend to stay away from.
First and foremost, Google uses it to track your movements? Really? As if downloading this one application changes google from tracking your movements the other 100 ways that are probably embedded services, etc. Not only that, they're not forcing you to use gas to find portals, etc. If you have legs, you can walk, as I said earlier, as long as you don't live in the middle of nowhere.
Also, if you don't have any interest in going to Libraries, (or even post offices), it doesn't mean that other folks like myself don't like to either, Libraries are purty awesome.
Also OP, it's hard to really get an opinion of the game, it's one of those things where you just have to try it and get a feel for it.
