Yeah this takes all the bad parts of PvP and crams them into one game. PvP isn't about being fair, it is about controlling territory and content. The best PvP games have always been the type that allow open world PvP. These PvP in a box games are just awful and we need a new name for them because it isn't PvP.
OP you are right in a sense, i played smite also, and i like it more the league of legends when it comes to graphic and movement. no click to move thing like league of legends at all you actually move like in WoW, It is really similar to a mmorpg because the 3d environment and the play style but it is not a mmorpg at all.
But if you want arena style moba with the 3d environment with no a need to put any cash in the cash shop that is the game you want. All the same as league of legends but with a 3d environment in it.
Avoid Hi-Rez studios like the plague, they are known to make games and not support them. Look at global agenda and Tribes...
LOL no it's totally free to play and you can gain no playing advantage with money. All money gets you is new looks or voicepacks for the different Gods. You can also get the ultimate god pack and have all of the gods available right away, but you an earn them easily enough and I've found that getting new Gods is a kind of progression like MMORPGs.
I'm stingy with money for games but I have actually forked over about 25 bucks for a skin (appearance) and a few voicepacks, just because I really love the game and those things make it a little bit more fun. Plus I like to support a good game when I see one.
Apparently they abandoned Global Agenda and Tribes because they started losing money. SMITE however is making money and they've partnered up with Tencent in China which pretty much guarantees it will be a success (Chinese beta just started recently).
I like the grind, though. It's the only way to feel the reward or pride about your character.
It's like working hard at the gym... you finally get those pecs, shoulders, and abs. I'm sure he feels better about his body than mr. rhino bellybutton. He had to work for it.

I know what you mean, and I used to feel that way about ffxi, but that's because grinding was actually difficult. Things like getting your artifact gear was a true accomplishment. Hell, the amount of effort just getting a party together for a few sessions of 6 hours each grinding on mobs just to get 1 single level, and the fact that these mobs were not at all easy to kill in any level range, these things along with things like actually leveling DOWN, or expensive crafting mats exploding in your face, these things made you feel like you had really done something when you made a +1 item or leveled up.
Nowadays the grind is mind-numbingly easy and only requires time, not effort, and for the most part can all be done solo.
hate to break it to you op but most multiplayer games are like "end game pvp" from mmos. nba live, chess, mobas, rts, call of duty, etc. smite is not very unique.
Yeah when I play chess I often find myself thinking, "Gee this is a lot like endgame battlegrounds in WoW, Rift, TERA, Warhammer, STO, KOTOR etc."

Thanks OP tickled me that. Few chuckles.
