I have never played SWG, i sometimes thought about it. It being the only Futuristic MMO worth a damn out there atm. But i was told some things i didnt like about the game in the past. I was told that everything requires buffs, you must go and get a buff, pay for it from another player just so you can go play.
Im a solo player at heart, i want to be able to go out and play and level up to cap mostly alone. I know big time bosses would require groups and all that.
Is it true that you need buffs to lvl?
Did this new system i hear about change that?
Im kinda interested in giving this a shot now, now that this new system is in. I get the feeling that the people quitting are quitting because their buffer characters are useless now, and so there pure combat characters are fucked too. I can understand if its such a drastic change to be pissed.
Anyhow im interested in trying, with all you people quitting maybe one of you dont want your old account anymore?
I hope i win this contest too so i can get the total package with both expansions.

With the new combat upgrade it is harder to solo but not impossible......
It is really a much better game when you group. The whole point of the the CU was to get people grouping again so they can employ team mechanics. I realize that stifles some of you solo fans a bit but just look at it as a challenge. This will take far more skill on your part than any game that supports a solo friendly environment (WOW AO etc...)
This game is definitely the best sci fi game out in my opinion and with the new expansion coming out coupled with this combat upgrade AND the release of the new movie it should bring alot of new players into the game. Also there have been rumors of the game branching out to the PS2 (like FFIX) that would also get the numbers up.
Try it out it may be just what you are looking for.
Critical thinking is a desire to seek, patience to doubt, fondness to meditate, slowness to assert, readiness to consider, carefulness to dispose and set in order; and hatred for every kind of imposture.
I'm sure there will be a trial period coming up, so I'd advice some patience.
Raph Koster is bent on the grouping idea, so I'd get used to doing so if you plan on playing.

Oh, cruel fate, to be thusly boned. Ask not for whom the bone bones. It bones for thee.
As long as you're not coming to play SW:G as a crafter, I think you'll be OK. I've cancelled 3 of my 4 accounts. They were crafting and non-combat support characters: Doc/BE/Entertainer/Armor Smith
I still have my last account which is a Master Ranger/Master Rifle. Wouldn't suggest going Rifles tho, they're very very broken. All the AOEs were removed and their cover/conceal shot doesnt work due to the new LOS rules.
Other than that... oh, wait.. don't go CH.. their pets are running off as soon as the Master goes into combat.. then there's pistols, when you get out of range your auto-fire stops working making it impossible to try any kind of kiting technique.. and uhmm... yeah.. you'll find something you like, I'm sure

I am a crafter (Master shipwright + some trees of artisan) , but also a Master smuggler + pistoleer.
I have a combat level of 60 (out of a possible 80). I am quite safe on my home planet of Lok, which is one of the medium difficulty adventure planets. I can solo quite well unless I try the high end creatures.
I also have access to a Master Droid Engineer, Master Artisan, Master Merchant ... and he is as crafty as they get :-) Combat level 7. He is also zooming around Lok ... solo. Yes, he can only fight very few of the creatures there and has to be careful where he drives or he gets shot of his swoop. But he is perfectly capable to servicing his harvesters and running his factories.
And if I am REALLY unlucky and mercenaries or Kimogilas camp on my spots, I ask my friends on guild chat and a few minutes later someone comes and removes that showstopper.
Have fun

So ... lets not talk about my character but the other one I have access to.
Triple crafting/merchant master with unarmed 4 ... aka combat level 7. I guess thats a "REAL" crafter in anyones book.
He lives on Lok ... usually mob level is around 40 ... with a range from 5 to 80+. So I would say he is living more dangerous than many of his colleagues in their Nabooian, Tatooinian or Corellian cities.
Crafting ... done in town .. check
Running factories ... done in town ... check
Storage house management ... done in town .. check
How do I get into town in the middle of Lok ? --> Shuttleport
Scanning for resources .... driving around with swoop ... SLOWLY so the red mobs spawn in ... I get a reading ... drive around red mobs at 45+ m ... continue to scan ... find maximum ... Is there are lair or red mob at maximum ? Well
a) Choose a spot 100 m away and drop harvester .... maybe not maximum, but good enough or
b) Give a call on guild chat and the cavalry arrives a few minutes later and wipes the red mob out.
Harvester maintenance .... same as scanning for resources ....
Alternatively I send in a pet or a tank droid on a kamikaze run ... the mobs attack the pet and while everyone is busy I just drift near and after at maximum 10 seconds the harvester is empty of resources, full of energy, full of maintenance money and pumping out a new resource. Half of that can be done with primitive macro with hitting one key.
Well ... did I miss anything that a crafter absolutely NEEDS to do ?

You are a combat character. With a single craft. And a crafter alt.
Alts, while important, are only alts. They are not your primary experience of the game. If something gets tedious or painful on an alt, it's not a big deal, a big pain or a big annoyance. Because it's an alt, you can say "I'll do it later" and go back to being Big Man On Campus with your combative main.
But you aren't going to tell people that, because you're saying and doing anything you can to get people to buy into the CU so you have someone to play with. Your boasts about server population going up are nothing but BS, even if you ARE on Briea, which is the server with the highest population left on SWG and which not-so-coincidentally suffered the least amount of SoE fuckups and effyous.
Talk to some people who played on Bloodfin and you'll get an entirely different picture.

So .... does that in any way change what i said ?
That I do fine with both crafter and crafter/fighter hybrid after the combat revamp. Can do everything I did before CU, with some changes to tactics and just being more cautious.
You cant ... and I am sorry about that. But just because YOU cannot, does not mean everyone cannot. Plenty of crafters left in the game and they CAN do it. Every day.
I have friends on Europe-Chimera (same thing happened as on Bloodfin). Yes, they have not been happy about it. But after the initial anger they are back in game again.
If you think I am talking BS ... well, too bad. I HAVE seen more people online lately. That you dont like or believe it does not change that fact. I HAVE seen and witnessed many good comments about the Rage of the Wookiees expansion (which is NOT equal to the combat revamp, where comments are a mixed bunch). That you dont like it does not change that fact. The world will still be spinning after all is said and done.

Erillion, you are a COMBAT CHARACTER with a mild crafting hobby. A level 60 COMBAT CHARACTER who happens to be a RANGED fighter isn't going to be hurting much. You're practically related to the flavour of the month. Your perspective on crafting is flawed by this fact.
I held off on RotW to see if the CU was playable, which I found it not to be. I'm not going to throw good money after bad on SoE's word or yours, since both have about the same value at this point in time. Judging by descriptions of the RotW expansion by more explicit players who both liked and disliked it, it would have been another waste of my time and HD space. You are right in that more people like the expansion than can stomach the CU, though. Too bad every good review was given by a combat junkie. Had it been otherwise I might have been tempted. Maybe. Or maybe that's just my jonesing for the Classic game and trying to go back and smack my own fingers with the CU hammer again to bring back the old game and old feeling.
And speaking of Bloodfin and Chillastra... funny that Chill is still recieving that quad xp while Bloodfin, which suffered twice the snafuu and downtime has been relegated to nothing like those servers that didn't suffer the apex of SoE's devs' amazing incompetence.
But yes, I'm sure they haven't been thrilled with things since the 27th. With very good reason. Poor bastards, still beating their fingers with that hammer.

If you were thinking about playing ask yourself a few questions.
1: Do you like being lied too?
2: Do you like if you spent thousands of hours doing something someone takes all your work away, and making all that time worthless?
3: Do you like Beta Testing a game for charge 2 1/2 years since the games released?
4: Do you enjoy bugs that have been around for years and will never be fixed?
5: Do you like gathering possessions in online games only to have them instantly made worthless for no reason?
6: Do you like you and your entire communitys voice ignored and treated like pond scum by people that are employed by you?
7: Do you enjoy playing a game for 2 1/2 years and then have them say "oops, we screwed up, time to put a new buggy unbalanced system in. the previous buggy unbalanced system was getting to old"
8: The only real interaction between the Devs and players is when they ban and suspend your account. for that they always have plenty of time to do!
If the answer is yes to all of the above, by all means join SWG, you will get all that in trumps

LOL ....
Flavour of the month ? I have been smuggler / Pistoleer since September 2003. Flavour of the month indeed :-) Especially as smugglers and pistoleers were clearly the dominating combat professions before the CU, were they not ??
mild crafting hobby ... LOL ... I wont post the file again which I used to answer your other post, but if THAT is a mild crafting hobby I wonder how I would do as a "real" crafter :-)
