[Column] Guild Wars 2: What If Professions Received New Weapon Proficiencies?

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The professions of Guild Wars 2 utilize powerful weapons to bring down their enemies. ArenaNet has armed each profession with a wide selection of these weapons to choose from, giving players a handful of strategic possibilities. But what if each profession was given some new choices?  That is, after all, what Colin Johanson said was coming down the pipe in an interview with our own Bill Murphy. Which profession should gain access to which weapon?

This would be an awesome way to summon a minion.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's broken beyond repair. Ppl who care about skills have long left the game. 5 forced skills, 1 heal and a whopping 4 skills to choose. Million different class combinations my $ss.

Haters going to hate.  And it's not "5 forced skills", as anyone who actually knows what they're talking about with this game would know that most classes have 10 base skills available (thanks to weapon swaps), their healing skill, 3 utilities, and 1 Elite skill.  Classes that don't have weapon swap have sub-sets that more than make up for it (such as Elementalist Attunements and Engineer Kits).   Mind you all these can be swapped out of combat to something completely different if they so choose as there are dozens of utility skills that each class can choose to equip; and there's also underwater weapons/skills too.

On the topic of the article, I'd like to see an Elementalist with either a Greatsword or Hammer.  Right now they have only the D/D as a melee build and the Fiery Greatsword elite, but not many options beyond that.   I know that they're cloth wearers, but there can be some creativity to get them within the fray of the battle.   And have you seen the Fiery Greatsword?  Those special effects are spectacular what with spinning into battle with a fiery trail, or throwing fireballs directly off the blade as they summon.

A skill system in the game would have been way better than just the weapon that gives you 5 skills. I really miss it in GW2.

    Nomnom

New weapons like katanas, scythes, claws, spears, etc. would be cool.

My, but this subject makes me lament the loss of how skills and the skill bar were handled in GW1.

If my elementalist uses a staff, then let me -- the player -- pick the staff skills I want to equip and arrange my action bar the way I want to.

As for the loss of being able to choose a secondary profession (along with its associated skills and abilities), well, don't even let me get started on that.... :(

That is ultimately what made me give up on this game, their forum moderation instantly removes anything remotely negative. Every so often they leave one cherry picked 'negative' thread, which then gets tons of replies, in an act to pretend they do allow negative criticism.

That, plus the fact they went completely against everything they said they would and would not do with the game, shortly after launch. I'm surprised this website even still covers this game so much, it has fallen far off the radar for a decent portion of MMORPG players.

Thats the only thing that made me lose intereset in PvP in GW2- skillchoice.

In GW1- skillchoice whas the holy grail on top of a grand pve experience.

    I like your thinking.

Stick to the subject matter. Gw2's game features were talked about and explained mutiple times before the game came out. So there shouldnt be that much of a surprise. The game was advertised to have at least 10 skills tied to both your profession and choice of weapon, plus weapon swap during combat and switched when out. Plus don't forget about traits and armor load outs.

In gw1, yeah you had more build possibly, but only a few for each class were actually good unless you were a Paragon which in that case you only had one.

As for me, I would like to see the engineer with a melee weapon and the guardian needs another ranged weapon.

I've been screaming this since 3 weeks into the game. If Age of Wushu can add 17-20 skill sets with 6-9 skills each, along with unique animations plus another 20 or so individual skills, over the past year,  WHY THE HECK hasn't GW2?

The foundation of the game is built for this, yet all they are doing is adding achievement check lists with some cinematics and calling it Living Story.

Another sad example of the failure of the "FTP" model, sorry folks there isn't any cash left to make significant changes to the game.

shame i cant even conprehend the article.

iam so angry/dissapointed at Anet with  their choices in the 2Q of last year (living story blah blah). i reall y thought this was going to be my ultimate mmo.

apparently it wasnt.- hope the new year brings fresh ideas into a dead game-imo.

It would be interesting to see an elementalist be able to use veapons that match the weapons they can conjure, although that may somewhat defeat the purpose of conjuring them in the first place, except for the fact that they can't weapon swap.  Lightning Greatsword or Icy Shield, anyone?

you still will have cookie-cutter builds which only allow you to use 1 or 2 weapons which give you certain skills and the other 15 weapons your profession might be able to use are kinda fluff?

There's always gonna be cookie cutter builds in any game.  I tend to try to think outside the box with my builds.  Everyone is currently heavy in the zerker builds for doing dungeons, but I just do what I feel is fun with the class.

New weapons would be awesome but I'd like to see them deliver on their promises from last year first.

Account wide WvW ranks and precursor scavenger hunt would be a nice start.

only if you skills and combat systems are poorly designed.

Game launched with way too little variation in skills.  Rather than new weapons, I would like to see multiple skills for existing weapons.  There should be at least 3-5 different skills you can put in each slot.  I don't mind skills locked to weapons, but the static 5 skills per weapon just felt bad.  This could also be fixed by having an augment system which significantly changes skills.

They really just need a lot more of everything.

I can't believe i wasted so much time on this game. I am usually not like this.

It's all F2P trick. Damn you F2P games!

As a Thief in SPvP i would love the Rifle for sniping afar and Axes/Greatsword for AoE and more defensive tankish play.

They've stated that the intent is to eventually open all weapon types to all professions, each with unique skills for that profession. Hammer wielding mesmer? Oh yeah. This will be part of the added horizontal progression.

    Oderint, dum metuant.
