Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen: Silly Name, Long Way Out

Some random musings on Brad McQuaid's upcoming MMO announcement

"Old School Hard"

McQuaid has been saying that the game will be old school, which has prompted a lot of discussion about how old is that school.  Without getting into a debate about whether we want a game like vanilla WoW or EverQuest, I had chatted with McQuaid and can confirm that Pantheon will be modeled after EverQuest and Vanguard.

What exactly that means, I don't know and hopefully the Kickstarter will reveal.  Hints I have gotten from McQuaid is that he means to make an MMO that focuses on group content (similar to how EQ and Vanguard were not really soloable early on).

What's In a Name?

OK, so despite my excitement, right out of the gate I am disappointed with the name.  Very generic, almost sounds like a Facebook game.

Kickstarter

The Kickstarter will go live sometime this month, though there has been no reveal as to:

1.  What will be revealed.  Months ago McQuaid took questions and said those questions would be answered in an FAQ.  He also mentioned that there will be a tech demo of sorts to show off early footage.

2.  What the Kickstarter goal will be.

Timeframe

McQuaid confirmed on Twitter that release was three years out, though there would be a long beta (as you would assume that access would be part of donation tiers).

Why Am I Excited

My hope is that McQuaid has decided to make a niche MMO, that doesn't fall victim to overly large budgets of AAA MMOs: crafting a design that caters to the most people to make the most money.  Instead, this MMO will feature aspects of old school MMOs (grouping is needed to progress, failure is penalized to heighten risk/ reward, fewer instant travel/ convenient travel, etc.) that have fallen out of MMO genre favor.

Give me a nudge in maybe 3 years and 6 months.

I used to take note of Kickstarter projects in the early days but those days are long gone.  It's largely just a haven for wild claims, aspirations with no programming talent or business acumen to go with them, and vapourware.

There is a lot of legit people on kick starter, you just gotta look.  For example Obsidian has their own project in kickstarter.  Theres another who has many industry professionals in it too like Nobuo Uematsu of square enix.  Theres a project being made by the creator of mega man.  And of course theres star citizen and other proven projects similar to it.

He's one of the last people in the gaming industry that I'd want to hear "talk" about a game from. I hold no grudge against any game once it's launched and judge them all by what they offer, so if it's good I'd play it...but... he's talked far too much and not delivered for me to ever think he'd come through on his word now.

I do hope he does this time though. I never really want to see any game fail.
