Hype meter manipulated- Star Citizen and Elite:Dangerous

MotionsMotions Member UncommonPosts: 4

Such a shame that some people think its necesarry to manipulate the hype meter for good of the game they want to play. Elite:Dangerous wasn't even in the top 10 and is now number 1 of games in development with an astounding score if 9.32 out of nowhere! Meanwhile its competitor, Star Citzen, suddenly dropped from ~8.4 to 7.82 out of nowhere!

Hmmm

Manipulation is when a MMOFTW video is made and then placed as a TESO video to increase its trending status........

"People who tell you you’re awesome are useless. No, dangerous.

They are worse than useless because you want to believe them. They will defend you against critiques that are valid. They will seduce you into believing you are done learning, or into thinking that your work is better than it actually is." ~Raph Koster

The hype meter doesn't accurately show which games are most popular ? How will we ever figure out what to play with out it!! This is the end people!

I rated ED months ago, yet until very recently it has shown exactly zero on the hype meter. Bugged maybe...

Or maybe Star Citizen that promised dog fighting module by Dec 2013 gave nothing and Elite: Dangerous Alpha is playable and fun.

I am a backer of both and at the moment, I am losing 'faith' with Star Citizen while Elite: Dangerous is delivering.

If there are more like me feeling the same way, maybe the hype numbers are true.

Elite: Dangerous did not have much hype to start with, but now that its playable and alot of Fun, it is getting hype

Star Citizen  was just TONS of hype, it only had one place to go if it failed to deliver

Top Voted (hype and Release) have always been fishy with manipulation. I liked watching the manipujlation race between Guildwars 2 and Secret World as it had been going on for a while before Gw2 finally went "FUDGE IT" and went full throttle to vote down FF14 and push itself just up top before easing itself down. Granted I was surprised seeing Secret world not trying to push itself up to beat GW2 anymore.

Those meters are just BS that really shouldn't even be on the site. They do not reflect any real score, its just a game of who can manipulate the most votes to be top dog, it doesn't in anyway really reflect the game the people the most people enjoy or anything of that nature on the site.

E:D only has 22 votes so it must be that it finally got the minimum amount of votes to be ranked.

I do not allow "hype" to sway my opinion one way or another. I have played and enjoyed many a game that was not hyped at all and had exact opposite happen with ones highly hyped.

Let's party like it is 1863!

Just like every other time this topic has come up because someones game suddenly fell behind ;)

It is funny that people put so much into this silly thing.

I personally think it is a skewed and meaningless meter,i think they should just get rid of it.

They should just try and bring us as much news about games as they can and let us decide individually what we do or don't like. Are we seriously going to go out and buy the game that has the highest hype meter rating,i would hope we use better judgement than that.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

No, it's not manipulation.  You just don't understand how the system works.  Elite: Dangerous had a very high rating all along, as the only people voting on it were those very excited about it, but it didn't show up because it was below the 20 vote minimum threshold to appear on the list.  Then suddenly it got that 20th vote and showed up on the list.  Once a game appears on the top 7 list, people who aren't excited about it see it and start voting it down.  Many other games have done this, too.

As for Star Citizen dropping, that's a consequence of the formula used, in which game ratings are average ratings of user ratings plus 5 - 0.5 * (rating of the top game).  When the rating of the rating of the top game goes up, everyone else's displayed rating goes down, and vice versa.  mmorpg.com implemented this system because without it, the top rated games tended to be below 7/10.

This, I hyped it as a 9 when it had 18 votes and no overall score, with my 19th vote it still had no score.

OP sounds like an upset Star Citizen fan.

Elite has had 7 years of development in an already establish studio. Of course it's alpha came out first..

    Hype meter is bogus.

Well, for players anyway, not for devs, they earn money by selling boxes.

But for players it is worthless, if it's crap they will see it soon enough and uninstall the code.

Manipulated or not, ED are worth every bit of it, I'm a backer and if you have played the alfa combat test you know you will be in for a wonderful ride every single step of the development.

If it's not broken, you are not innovating.

There's a word for what happens when people who are into something and eagerly await its release, who then go around drumming up interest and attention.

    What's that word...

    Tip of my tongue, seriously.

Yeah, Like Quiz said it's just because Elite finally got enough votes to register. Whenever a game gets that magic 20th vote they usually will show up high on the list and than they will settle down as more votes get cast. As for Star Citizen it was the same... When it first appeared it started strong but now it's settling to it's proper place on the list. The same will happen to Elite given time. I'm really surprised either of these game are doing as well as they are here considering they both can just barely be considered MMOs. Don't get me wrong as I'm a fan of both games but this is a MMO site after all.
