Any best of list is going to be subjective to every individual, FFXIV was my most anticipated for 2014 but I no longer play it, everything instanced and end game tiered gear grinding isnt my kind of thing, not to mention the horrendous amount of gil required for company housing with no economy to speak of.
Originally posted by Crazy_Stick Well, the most interesting thing I have taken away from reading this list was an impression of just how disillusioned with the genre fans felt this year from reading the comments section. And honestly I wouldn't say its an impression only supported by this site either.
Really though? Let's put this in perspective- say all 46 posts in this thread were complaints about all MMOs released in 2013. Now multiply that number by 10- is that even close to the active number of players in any of the games on the list?
I mean I get that people love to come to forums to complain but their perceptions obviously don't reflect the reality of the genre. If the majority of the genre fans were really that disillusioned by 2013 then there's a hell of a case of Stockholm Syndrome going on.
Exactly.
Forums are a gathering place for people to complain and argue. If you're not interested in doing either, you're generally not on forums.
This is why they become so dangerous. Vocal minorities tend to be very accessible to people looking to gather data, but don't represent an accurate sample of the whole.
Going F2P is technically a release, so loosely, yeah, OK, they are on the list. But STO and GW2 didn't really release anything other than content updates. WoW 5.4 is certainly better than adding a new race to STO.

Opinions etc. Personally I thought ARR was the worst MMO of the year, possibly even the last 5 years. Never have I gotten bored so quickly in a game, it was a real chore to play. Luckily I got it for $3 in the bargain bin as the original FFXIV.
Interesting list, can't really argue with it, as it is personal preference.
My choice...
1. FFXIV ARR - Never imagined that could make a good game out of the original's failure, it isn't the best MMO I've played, but is solid in almost every aspect.
2. SWTOR - Whilst Galactic Starfighter is utter rubbish, the Rise of the Hutt Cartel expansion was very good, albeit too short. The new flashpoints and operations throughout the year have been good too. Though I enjoy SWTOR and understand most people don't.
3. RIFT - Very playable in its free to play state, the new Instant Adventure removes the boredom of its normal questing a little, but the dungeons remain solid fun to play through. Never get tired of having multiple roles on one character.
4. Neverwinter - Whilst I care little for the game now, I can't deny them the accolade of producing something like the Foundry, I just wish the rest of the game was good enough to do it justice.
5. I can't think of anything else worth mentioning...
And not one of them was released in 2013, what does that tell you? My fear is that without the release of strong new titles, sites such as this one will start calling F2P second rate games the best of year.
Hopefully we will get some P2P or B2P MMOs this year to give us a better chance of having some decent MMOs.
lol, well i never ever agreed with anyones best of lists but in this one I am sure even WoW beats out some of the ones listed....of course as others have mentioned, slim picking this year indeed.
This whole article is a sad joke none of these games are really much good and all have major problems, bear in mind I know the author didn't have much to work with so he did what he could and couldn't really make a stellar article as he didn't have much to work with, but some of the game like Neverwinter for example should never have made it on this list and it's with the same astonished disbelief as some other replies here that I write this post.
I mean truly I could not help but laugh after reading this and have to give the author props for what I feel is a good sense of humor.
Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.
Another Sink for mmorpg. They put flame bait stupid articles on the main feed...Last time people attempted this their mmorpg accounts got banned. Now, out of ideas, they encourage it...but only by certain ones..
Any ways, this list is gabrage. Neverwinter reminds you of the games you SHOUD be playing. It has the copy and paste models of STar Trek, yet lacks the customization and over all depth of star trek...So why play it? Even the slide in NW is like a skateboard slide...in STar Trek it is an actual combat roll...why CRYPTIC half assed everything in NW is a mystery....well not really, it is called push caacaa on the market at full price and half the effort. A great business model PWE uses as well...and it got 2nd place??? lolllll
FF14 is just getting attention because it is a new release. Otherwise it is not at all a good mmorpg. It is subpar, and shut down twice for a REASON! All those reasons are not fixed in this last version, and it is attracting nothing but asian market based keeping it financed and a handful of sheeple in western markets.
GW2 lol...2012 promisses and build up to a 2013 flop. I would have started the list with this in 10TH.
Sta WArs: Guild wars 2 in space. 9th place.
The Secret World is not even a 2013 launch, and needs to shut down. Wal-mart style fashion mixed with out of touch lore. Same skill tree as all other mmorpgs just warped into a circle so therefore "new". Crap combat that spams 1 and 2 more than pac man eats balls. Puzzles that require DERP logic "I am in a house at 6PM therefore I Should look in the bible at John Chapter 6"... Seriously forcing a square in a round peg fail brain puzzles. Finished the game in a week. Dissapointed every step. Especially since FACTIONS MEAN NOTHING! Being in a cult faction provides no skill tree uniqueness, no story uniqueness, you all have the same spells, do the same quests, and even group up the same. PvP is a failure so that holds no meaning to be in the Illuminati etc..No political system...the only thing this game offers for chosing one side or another is FASHION and a different opening cinematic....NOt even on the list.
STar Trek 3rd, RIFT 4th place. All the others remove for obvious fail reasons.
Sad. And this is in the active feed of mmorpg LOLOLOL. Even more strange they do not even go off their game list that you can rank in TOP order... There is a nice little title I discovered there called Eldevin. Not to bad. Although not super 3D, it beats in content half these titles XD

They been really heavy handed lately with that be careful, they really don't like being called out for something that is obvious. 2013 was a bad year for mmo's and how half this stuff was on the list you just have to shake your head.
"By listening to fans and delivering on what they were asking for." well at least you did mention arenas and how they completely screwed over pvpers that PAID for server transfers to play on 8v8 ranked warzones on pvp servers only to have that game mode removed from the game and replaced by arenas .
Also the 2 HM operations weren't released as part of the Hutt Cartel expansion , the story line is not even related, goes to show how much you guys know the game...
Yeah that it made it to the list was a head scratcher. Inadequate game releases some quests plus continues its transformation from failed MMO to lobby PvP game. Next year it will make the top 5 again after they release another Operation and add the Dance Game from xbox to it.

That list is the worst POS I've read in a long time !
makes me wonder if it's based on how much the companies paid you to place BS games at the top of the list !
swtor, ff, neverwinter WTF all BS games that have failed miserably !
FF may be good now but it was a flopped game than and they dare launch it back again with a sub go fuck yourselves is my answer !

agree i was surprised to see STO on the list
EQ2 for its part, added a new class, made DOV free, and removed restrictions for gear, race, class in 2013

Quiet year for MMOs.
I agree with final fantasy xiv in the first position, but... neverwinter? WTF

No, simply a statement of the problems the genre has got itself into.
2) Neverwinter
Really?
Star trek online? Neverwinter?
They must of put ALOT of cash in your pockets for this.
I agree with the list. Neverwinter is an awesome, truly f2p game.
Would like to try AoW, SWTOR, SW and Rift, maybe even Tera?
Yeah that it made it to the list was a head scratcher. Inadequate game releases some quests plus continues its transformation from failed MMO to lobby PvP game. Next year it will make the top 5 again after they release another Operation and add the Dance Game from xbox to it.
Survivor of the great MMORPG Famine of 2011
How much advertising did Cryptic have to buy to get Neverwinter on this list? I hope it was enough to buy everyone at MMORPG new cars.
If not, you sold out your integrity far too cheaply.
