An older game that is worth another look

I saw this post on reddit about the changes to FFXI, never see this game recommended much on this forum.

http://www.reddit.com/r/ffxi/comments/1t4m9b/ffxis_latest_update_why_now_is_an_amazing_time_to/

This will be from the perspective of a player who just recently returned, and started from scratch with absolutely nothing. Currently, I'm playing on the Asura server, and have just hit level 30 (nothing amazing at this point). However, I feel that I need to explain some of these Quality of Life features that have been added that made playing so much fun, again.

This post is directed more towards those who are looking for an MMO to play, or are already on the fence about returning to this one. I wasn't expecting all these changes when I returned, and it was an awesome surprise.

Below is a quick summary of some of the features that I think will be most interesting to people starting again.

HOME POINT TELEPORTING

  • You can now teleport between any home point in the game
  • Many new home points have been added, making this probably the most viable method of transportation
  • Home points have been added throughout multiple areas all cities to allow you to travel between areas in the same zone quickly (similar to FFXIV's aetheryte system)

I love this change. It has made traveling between all the starter cities, Selbina, Mhaura, and Jeuno crazy fast. When you're starting from scratch without an airship pass or teleports, it comes in handy. I can return to Bastok, buy up new gear, get more food/items, and warp back to Valkurm in a matter of minutes.

Here is a list of the added home points.

RECORDS OF EMINENCE

  • A vast amount of quests that don't require turning in, accessible directly from your "Quest" submenu in the main menu. Some automatically renew as you complete them
  • The quests you get go hand-in-hand with traditional FFXI leveling, such as killing X amount of mobs in a particular zone, acquiring X amount of experience points, looting X amount of crystals, etc.
  • You are awarded "Sparks", which can be turned in for weapons. Essentially, every weapon you will need for every job will be provided via sparks levels 1-50. You won't have to search the AH again for most weapons (unless there's something particular you're after)
  • There's more to this for level 99 players, but I have yet to reach that point. If someone else wants to elaborate, please feel free

Honestly, this, paired with the fact that most armor needed for leveling can be found in Brown Treasure Caskets, has made the once difficult experience of gearing up low jobs much more tolerable. Not to mention the sheer amount of added experience has helped tremendously. You may also occasionally receive something called a Copper Voucher. Two of these can be turned in for items ranging in value from 100k to 300k gil. So far I've obtained 2 of these items.

TRUST - (This right here, is the most important change for beginning players)

  • Starting at level 5, you can learn the ability to summon NPCs to fight with you
  • These NPCs are pretty much just as powerful as grouping with other players, but allows you to level up solo*
  • So far, you can only summon 3 members at a time, but currently I have a tank NPC, a DD NPC, and a healer NPC. I level up via FoV and GoV, while maintaining a higher XP/hour than alliance book burn parties.
  • You can do this in almost any zone (except battle zones like Dynamis, BCNM, etc.), allowing you to revisit the old zones that were replaced once Abyssea and Book Burns came out while still getting a lot of xp/hour

*Apparently, they will eventually enable people to group with friends while using Trust, but at this time it isn't possible. One of theonly downsides, in my opinion. This has completely changed how people level. I got 1-30 in only a few hours, while completing my subjob quest and Bastok missions simultaneously. I summon my 3 NPCs, and just kill every monster ranging from EP-T on my way. If you want to know more, I'd check out the official update page because there's just way too much information -> here.

A lot more has been added to the game with this patch, but when I first came back it was difficult to find a quick summary of the latest information for new players, so that's why I made this post. Hopefully it helps someone! Read up on the full patch notes here.

PS. If you're returning to the game, there's a Reddit Linkshell on Asura. I've yet to receive an invite, as I just started up again, but the information can be found here. My name in game is Altaire, so feel free to send a message!

I should add that you can find the official page regarding this update here.
