Originally posted by Vutar A better question. If F2P games are so wonderful, why can they not compete with WoW? WoW is a sub based, you have to also buy the box. For F2P players this is the worst combination in the history of the world to hear them tell it. A game cannot survive with this combo if they are to be believed. Yet WoW has. On the other hand there are numerous F2P games around where you do not have to buy the box nor pay a sub. Those games however, are not even close to the success of WoW. Think about how incredible that is. A game, that is "free" cannot come close to the a game that is not free. Perhaps F2P fans should concentrate more on why no one wants to play their games, rather than constantly trying to bash sub games.
Well said. My opinion would be the stigma associated with a F2P title being "it's free to play, therefore it must be a sub par game and not worth my time."
I think Guild Software's Vendetta deserves an honorable mention here: they've kept a free download / monthly subscription model going for over a decade, recently adding a $1 per month "Lite sub" option.
I play it quite often. I like it enough to keep it running on Ouya over a largish, old, CRT monitor in the living room of the apartment I rent.

And why shouldn't they have a cash shop? As soon as they release a neat pet or mount, they can walk away with 25 million in one day.
That is the point. May be if they make WoW F2P, they can bring in 100M every time they release a pet, and sooner or later, that is going to outweigh sub fees.
Then few will play the game. Why? Because it's now so common place.
When releases are paced right, people treat the content like Christmas. Release more and more and in >3 mon cycles it becomes fast food and as regarded.
If you get rid of subs totally, or if wow goes f2p, it wont continue as is. Everything changes.
And the problem of that would be ....?
No problem.
If subscriptions go away, it doesn't mean f2p will still make money. It may mean, f2p doesn't make any money at all. Or the value of the items in the shop drop to nothing.

Free 2 play only works because of P2p.
