Wildstar has enough rave the WoW-clone sayers aren't going to slow it down.  The only thing WoW did right I wish all games would clone - letting in modders.  Everything anyway is a DnD clone; or I like to think of it more like great, great grandchildren.

A comparison used to diminish the value of the game by insinuating uninspired copycat behavior. A shorthand to convey the essence of the game. A reminder that it is not the genuine article. An intellectually lazy dismissive criticism.

It doesn't have to be. And, it doesn't have to be a dishonest comparison either. Earlier today I compared Herokon to both LotRO and PoE. I mentioned all the stuff that was a lot like (often exactly like) either. And, the places where it departs from both (like how it drops some of the useless features that the two games have - such as zoom in, and jumping). It can be used to give people a good sense of what a game is like previous to playing it.

On the flip side of that coin I also called Eldavin a more linear Runescape clone (which I don't think i am way off base for saying...if  WoW and Runescape had a baby it would be Eldavin, lol). Some might actually enjoy that...Feels like rs, play like a Wow-esc. That might be just the ticket for some.

Out of all the recent crop of MMOS this one has such an uncanny resemblance to WOW that you just can not help but compare the two.

Now if someone say GW2 is WOW clone it is silly but doesn't seem that silly to me when used for wildstar.

It's F2P...so...yeah.  Good luck with that.

No you could not. Doom clones stopped happening along time ago when the genre shifted during the halo era.

Today, it would be more accurate to describe most fps games as Halo, Call of duty, or Battlefield clones.

I agree with the OP to some extent. However both SWTOR and FFXIV really were WoW clones. They are basically the WoW engine with different 'skins' on them. This doesn't hold true for all MMOs. GW2 is different enough from WoW, as will be TESO. I think WIldstar is different enough to feel like a improved version of WoW so I have high hopes for it.

What he said, I have no idea how you can call a non-fps game a clone of THE fps game that essentially defined the entire genre
