Fishing

Why is it that every MMO seems to include Fishing? Why do they think we like it? Why is it such a necessary part of many games? Why aren't other hobbies/sports included (e.g.: why not a Rock Climbing skill? Or a Billiards skill? Or a Guitar-playing skill?)

Fishing by this point is pretty standard issue in fantasy MMOs, it also requires a lot less effort than those other things.

I think they include fishing because most people like it.  It is probably easy to program.  To me it helps you relax from killing mobs, its nice to take a break once and awhile.

  • Yep, I think a lot of people enjoy these kinds of noncombat activities.

Because fishing is considered a basic "Survival" skill now while rock climbing skill can surely save your life when chased by 1,000 pound grizzly bear.

I really don't see the need for "Useless" skills (Billiards, Bowling, Card games)  other than for hobbyists. It's alot of extra non essential coding. Bad enough in 10+ years MMO's still haven't gotten crafting right!

AND.....There already is Guitar playing skill in most MMO's, what do you think Bards do other than sing?

Look how many would cry then if they actually had to play guitar chords to produce a spell LOL

I love things like fishing, music system (lotro),crafting, gathering, housing, etc. in an mmorpg. I like having lots of things to do. A lot of people enjoy non-combat activities.

I like fishing but I don't like it when it takes forever to catch something.  The reward for that amount of time is usually terrible.  I'd rather catch less valuable things faster with a properly adjusted chance at catching something more valuable with uncommon, rare, legendary type levels of rewards.  Sitting and staring at a bobber for more than 10-12 seconds is a turn-off.

Me as well. To me an MMO has to be more than just smashing face all the time.

I made hundreds of millions being a Grandmaster Fisherman in UO.  (Thank you for breaking the game Origin) :)  But yeah, the tedium of fishing on most games just outweighs any benefit.

Fishing is something that I enjoy in real life. I have only played a few MMO's with it, LoTRO and Darkfall. I can only speak to my experience but I think fishing is a fantastic non combat skill in any RPG game. I wish they would include it in more games actually.

I used the mod for Skyrim and he did a pretty good job with it. I don't really care about catching junk, but using the fish in receipes where eating actually does something, it's well worth it. Eating fish in DF restored your health and certain fish would assist with mana regen if i'm not mistaken.

Crafting fishing rods and lures make it more realistic. It absolutely has a place to me. I actually posted a few years ago looking for games that had a decent fishing mini game.

Playing: BF4/BF:Hardline, Subnautica 7 days to die
    Hiatus: EvE
    Waiting on: World of Darkness(sigh)
Interested in: better games in general

I love fishing in most games and i know a guy who back then bought a N64 and Zelda just to fish.

Games should include way more of these leisure activities and fluff. Like breeding butterflies just to release them at a special place to never see them again. I also havent seen a game that included some good and lengthy tracking.

It's a welcome change from combat, combat, combat, grind, grind...
