they update just as often and just as meaningfully as before they went F2P infact i'm pretty sure between people still subbing and the amounts people spend on the cash shop they are making so much more money then they ever did with the pay to play option... subscriptions are still there for people who want to sub.. it just gets you benefits like daily boosters n such
Edit - not only that but since going free to play they have released new dungeons and raids and have more content lined up as well as the next expansion pack with new souls for each archtype etc... rift is far from dead and the updates still fly in a couple of times a week some weeks... not to mention they just finished a massive graphics engine overhaul ontop of all the content and fixes and changes they are constantly making!
since version 2.5 was released on the 6th of november there has been 8 hotfixes so far, which if you take into account christmas break which is only fairf could basically be said 1 update a week, which is pretty good considering some games go months with no hotfixes...
and content that was in development before f2p doesnt mean it wasnt finished after the game went f2p they were obviously still working on it, testing etc... before releasing it i'd assume... thats still man hours getting spent on it, hell i went back to riftr recently subbed for 3 months then blew over $100 on the cash shop... stopped playing again just before 2.5 came out.... but log in and out from time to time to see whats going on or when a friend tells me to jump on.
i honestly feel the game is making pretty good bank now, a lot better then it was previously... and there is only room for improvement
Every Game says they make more money from F2P but once they go F2P the game turns to shit. So I question weather this is true. Rift hasnt gone to shit yet, btw, but I am sure it will because once monitization becomes more important that content, you are doomed.
Let's not jump the shark with that comment ;-) Just poking fun. Lots of games have in-game weddings. One more fluff feature is never a bad thing.
I would also like to add to the list:
6) Fix the optimization issues
This is a big deal that effects lots of players. They are currently testing some fixes on the PTS.
i have to disagree, the hybrid model that lotro adopted is a complete POS... Rift, Aion, TERA, GW2... i mean realistically we pretty much all payed for boxes for these games and then they went free to play with the exception of guild wars 2 my point being is they dont restrict content if you dont have a sub, they offer bonuses for having a sub that you dont get if you're a non subscriber, but unlike greedy cash grabs like DDO, Lotro, SWTOR, to a lesser degree TSW as far as im still aware, they dont restrict you from content or anything else in the game for that matter if you dont subscribe.. or buy it from the cash shop... they offer everything straight up and arent completely in your face about the cash shop, i went back to play lotro recently and my god everything about the cash shop was plastered all over my UI i couldnt do anything without it being all like "have you seen my cash shop"
You mean that LotRO which got 3 expansions, new events, improved festivals, new mechanics, etc. since the f2p switch? Lol.
On topic, nice title, loved the show, Darth Bobo is the most awesome Vader spoof ever And, pretty much that's all I can add.
I left before SL (but I heard how horrid the grind is in it), so I missed the frequent updates and the constant dev-community connection and the buzz of those years. I checked back for a month after the switch (+ a few more days to try the free side too), but to be honest, 1 wow-clone is more than enough in my stable and that's LotRO for me...
Still, I use to praise Rift for its great f2p model. If anyone wants a wow-ish game which isn't wow, go and try Rift. The soul system is deep and a boon for theory crafters, and the dimensions is also a great system.
I agree, their updates aren't bad by any stretch. They do pretty well compared to many games on the market. They set a high bar in the beginning, however, and that's what they need to match. For months and months and months before moving to free-to-play, they went about dead silent (comparatively) and it shattered the perception that this was something they could keep up. Patch 2.4 and 2.5 are getting the speed back on pace but I would really love to see *new* content being added, not just rehashed like was done with some of the dungeon revamps. Those are good but they shouldn't be all of what we get.
Still, the instance rollout of 2.5 was pretty darn cool.
The hubby and I are back in Rift and we're just having a blast this time. On Top of subbing we throw $$$ at the game as well. We've purchased mounts, cosmetics, and expanded our crafting. Rift is a very fun game with lot's of gorgous landscape and the community isn't as toxic as you'll encounter in some other games.
I played LOTRO before it went F2P and imho ruined what was once a great game. Everying in that game is about the cash shop anymore which makes me really sad because the lore is amazing (thank you Tolkien) but it definitely deserves much better than what WB/Turbine has done to it.
GW2 was great for about the first 8 months then it just wasn't. I think it was the skill system, it is seriously lacking in any real depth and gives you no meaningful way to experiement and change things up. This also makes me sad. I was HUGE GW fan and waited for a really long time for GW2 to come out but ANET just can't seem to get it right.
I enjoyed WOW and I do have MOP but I haven't felt a huge urge to return yet and check it out. I'm sure eventually I will just not sure when.
For now RIFT is very fun & I"m very much enjoying myself in it. However I would definitly like to see a few more chronicles. A few more single player ones would be good as well.
if you're talking about chronicles.. they are actually a really good way for the developers to inject story and lore into the gameand revisit important moments in telaras history (previous game moments / story line focused events), although 90% of people ignore the fact, and also the ones that are based around pre SL raids, arent rehashes of content, they are a watered down version of previour tier raids solo or 2 mannable for people who werent around back then to get sort of an experience of what they were like without having the trouble of having to find a party to do content no one is wasting time on anymore...
you have to be kidding me. Lotro expacs after f2p are total crap. They released expacs every year because that is the only way they can make money. So you get half assed expansions every year. Look at Mones of Moria and then every expansion after that. A total joke
I actually love the idea of chronicles. They are perfect for players who can't or aren't interested in raiding. Most of what came in 2.5 was updates instead of anything truly new.
This was it:
Nov. 13 – Return To Deepstrike (60)
Nov. 20 – Hammerknell Chronicle (60)
Nov. 27 – Greenscale's Blight Chronicle (60)
Dec. 4 – Drowned Halls (60)
Dec. 11 – Planebreaker Bastion: Aftermath
Dec. 18 – River Of Souls Chronicle (60)
Not a criticism, just to be clear.
Are you playing as DPS? On Faeblight, I don't usually wait more than a few minutes if I spec as tank, or even tank/dps.
They need to add better combat annimations which make combat feel like it makes an impact
and better running annimations..
and add interesting stories.. With characterdepth
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
Yeah, DPS is a dime a dozen. Queue as a tank or healer and you'll get in right away.
I have played Rift since launch and I couldn't agree with this article more. Not five minutes before seeing this article I was thinking that the pace of new content had slowed way down versus what it had been in the first year. I remember being blown out of my socks by the amazing updates we seemed to be getting every few weeks for the first year. During the last several months, however, the pace has either slowed, or it may be just because I am mainly PVP focused, so none of them seem to apply much to me. Maybe they are hard at work on the next expansion?
The one thing I will say is that the Rift F2P model is absolutely the best and I say this as someone who doesn't like F2P games forcing you toward the cash shop all day. In Rift it feels like all of the cash shop and subscription stuff are bonuses that I can have if I want, rather than something that is being forced on me. Compared to SWToR, where they take things away and force you to pay to get them back, Rift is a class act. I had to pay to get my quick bars in SWToR and wanted to use a lightsaber on a few of the devs.
Currently playing:
Rift
Played:
SWToR, Aion,EQ, Dark Age of Camelot
World of Warcraft, AoC

I can't play for free. Apparently forgetting the password to my account means I have to remember things that are even harder to remember than the password, some of which are impossible for me to have. So I won't be playing this I don't think, even if I did get a sudden urge to play.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
