I would go out on a limb and say RIFT. I don't know but it felt very populated. Not saying it is a good game. It is not my cup of tea. If I wanted to play a WoW'esq style of game I would just play WoW it does it best.

I kind of doubt that 7 million players strong seems to be realistic in the world of mmo's being the most populated. The new expansion will probably bring 3 million in more.
There are a bunch of F2P MMOs in Asia that top 4 million players. GW2 sold over 3 million copies, Neverwinter has had over 3 million accounts created, but you will find nothing about how many are still playing either of those games. EA lies out their backside and manipulates SWTORs numbers by combining it with other games. There is zero data on how many are playing Rift and Eve is sitting around 500k subscribers.

If it manages that (unlikely) they'll probably all fade away just like with the last expansion.

i know some haters will jump to my post but i dare say GW2 is the second most populated.
I dont have statistics but at any given time the majority of servers are always on very heavy load while the few remaining are on heavy load. The other games have a lot less servers and only get sort of heavy on peak times.

That really isn't a very good way to measure things, as companies have manipulated their servers to look full before.

Probably not. It's up there, but I'd bet that SWTOR beats it.
Why do you think that? Their tiny number of ever merging servers, their tiny staff, the lack of any kind of published numbers, it paints a grim picture.

true, but at least when i log in i see a huge amount of people throughout the day. I can only see that in a few other mmos in peak times (Rift, Swtor..)
Well damn something has to be second sounds like it's either GW2 or SWTOR. It looks like GW2 to me because they have more servers than SWTOR and are usually high to very high.

Depends where you play from and what you consider an mmo
In the west it's SWTOR for traditional mmorpgs at 1.5 mil If you include asian...no idea. They have some crazy games with crazy numbers.
If you include lol as an mmo I guess wow would be second :P
club penguin?
If you don't count chinese players.
They haven't released how many subs they have in well over a year. It was dangerously low before FTP and is probably there again.
Out of all the MMOs we have actual numbers for, Eve is the second most populated. Both in terms of subscribers and free players.
Its impossible to say.

I agree that SWToR is most likely higher just due to the cash shop numbers being greater. SWToR cash shop is the second largest after WoW funny enough. WoW just makes a boatload of money. For sources see: ( http://massively.joystiq.com/2014/01/18/led-by-mobile-and-free-to-play-u-s-digital-sales-see-big-gains/) & ( http://us7.campaign-archive1.com/?u=a2b9207999131347c9c0c44ce&id=f1b8fb8081&e=56010f2224 ).
So unless GW2 players just do not buy stuff, SWToR has a larger number of players.
So:
1. WOW.
2. GW2.
3. SWTOR.
4. RIFT.
Er... no. Not Rift. Rift has merged servers about 4 times and the population is ever declining.
GW2 and SWTOR don't have any numbers that they've released, and signs show the latter is doing poorly.
The ONLY western MMOs we KNOW of are WoW, and Eve's 560k subscribers.
it is wow .. LoL has more players than WoW.
Umm, the numbers for SWToR's cash shop are known see ( http://massively.joystiq.com/2014/01/18/led-by-mobile-and-free-to-play-u-s-digital-sales-see-big-gains/) & ( http://us7.campaign-archive1.com/?u=a2b9207999131347c9c0c44ce&id=f1b8fb8081&e=56010f2224 ). I would not call the numbers for SWToR bad at all.
