Hi, I'm looking for an MMORPG to get suck in to, i'm a novice gamer and am looking for something I can enjoy from the get go as well as improve my gaming skills, I'm open to all genres but im really looking for something I can invest quiet a bit of time in to get my mind of other things and generally have fun and get good at the game!
I have played Runescape and dabbled in WOW which I never got very good at as my head wasn't in it'!
I enjoy minecraft and pokemon type games such as Jade cocoon on PS1...
Im really open to anything so recommend away!
Feel free to probe me a bit more...

Try Neverwinter. It isn't game to invest huge amount of time in it but free and fun. Great way learn the basic parts of mmo's.
Lot games out there and depends what you want. I'm not playing anything since played most of them and got bored or max level. Waiting on few games to come out none which got me that excited and waiting on new season on path of exile."diablo like game".
You need pick what you want mostly from the mmo. Like how importen is crafting. Fast combat? Big world. etc
Don't tell the alien they can probe you. You might be in for ride, unless you into that.
GW2 can be a nice game if money is an issue. Very cheap consider you don't have to pay a subscription fee.
And their cash shop is even more tolerable than some freemium games.
How long ago did you try wow?
I'd recommend for free:
Rift, SWTOR and Neverwinter
to buy:
Guild Wars 2 or Wow
Those are really the best out there to play imo.
Thanks guys, My laptop specs are pretty basic as it stands, If I find a game I really enjoy im happy to invest a bit of money also, I've played WOW on and off but only for a couple of months at a time, I stopped about 6 months ago I believe my max level was about 48.
I've tried SWTOR but the lag was unbearable, having said that I have good internet now and My laptop is brand new.
Here's my specs:
Toshiba C50, DVD Dual layer rewriter, Win8, Wireless built in 802.11b/g/n, Processor AMD 8 series, SD, 8GB, Graphics Chipsel AMD Radeon HD 8330 Graphics.
GW2
Fun leveling, nice combat, easy Dungeons.
If you don't mind that it doesn't have any meaningful End Game, that's the game for you.
Thanks, Define "meaningful End game"
Ahh ok, seems like a bit of waste then, having spent all that time on you're character.
You know that feeling when you are at work/school and you can't wait to get home to play a game?
Well once you reach GW2 End Game, you would rather stay at work doing your colleague paperwork on a night-shift than coming back home and play GW2..............
Basically GW2 end game is shallow, repetitive and tedious, but if you are an Altholic and you play casually the game is fun.
Doesn't seem like my type of game then, I need to know I'm working towards something even If I never get there!
Try Rift. It has the best endgame besides Wow. It has alot of other things to do while leveling. The community is good. the graphics are good. There are player Dimensions which are actually an innovation in mmorpg's (rare to see a game with that) which you can work at. They are coming out with an expansion soon. Plenty of things to learn about the classes and skill combos. The downside is pvp is unbalanced because there are so many class combinations. Its a themepark, but a very nice themepark.
Thanks guys, gonna give RIFT a go, any tips would be appreciated, I am a complete Novice so normal talk as opposed to gaming talk is appreciated!
Well, one thing I will say about GW2 is that with ascended gear there is quite a bit of a gear treadmill now... and legendary weapons aren't something you'll achieve in a month.. especially if you just start playing.
Fractals are pretty good once you reach end game... while certain tiers can get slightly repetitive.. you won't get max AR or get to the max fractal level in a week or two... I mean GW2 is a solid 2 - 3 months worth of good play time without vying for ascended gear or legendary weapons.
The only game I've played recently that had better or more exciting PvP was DCUO, I like the structured PvP in guild wars.. new build have kept me busy for at least a month now.. trying new classes and coming up with new builds for my characters... on top of fractals.
The difference is that with GW2 you're really playing because you're having fun, at least in the PvP space... in PvE, once you get ascended gear and/or legendary weapons... you really won't have a tremendous amount of things left to do... but its taken some people a year just to get a legendary weapon.. so... to each their own.
What kind of character do you prefer? Melee vs. ranged... magic vs. weapon damage? I've played a lot of Rift and I can give you some tips... but be aware, my favorite Rift souls came from an expansion and are now premium - it'll cost you ~ $20 to unlock the lot.
The forums are also full of guides on different character builds for whatever you want to do: solo leveling, groups, PVP...
The game also has one of the better F2P systems: you can get a lot more out of it for free than most other F2P games.

Well i've just downloaded RIFT, playing on a PVP world and i've made a warrior class damage, I assumed this would be the best class for beginners?
Anything to get your feet wet but warriors in Rift can actually be sort of tough to play...
My favorite by far is the Harbinger / Chloromancer mage combo. It's a melee mage with lots of self healing that just happens as a side effect of your damage - very little need to ever actively heal. And because it's melee, it feels like a warrior in other games...pretty unique to Rift.

I recommend Lord of the rings Online. It's one of the MMORPG i come back to after trying out the newest ones. (Swtor and FFXIV is the other ones i play aswell).
Freemium as in you can subscribe or play for free with some restrictions while you earn Turbine points by playing the game to remove the restrictions or buy zones.
Lots of official events each year such as the normal seasonal events but also events from the community staff.
Currently Sapience is challenging each server to escort one of his level 10 hobbits to Isengard with the fastest time and only one reset incase he dies once.
Also lots of unofficial events on some of the servers like Winterstock and Weatherstock on Roleplay-Encouraged server Laurelin which is quite fun even if you don't roleplay.
It got wardrobe system which you can equip item appearances on your char without sacrificing your stats.
Deeds which award titles and Virtues(Which increases certain stats) for your char, for example killing 60 spiders in the first zone gives you 5 Turbine points and a Spider smasher title, then the next tier needs you to kill 120 spiders to get the virtue.
Great community and interesting lore if you're into Lord of the rings. I suggest typing /joinchannel glff when you start a new char to join a channel which has lots of people in it.
Yes Rift is good
You only need $5 to unlock the AH then is completely free.................. and the end game is challenging.
If you enjoy pokemon either Aura Kingdom or Dragons Prophet could be your game.
Aura Kingdom tho is published by aeria and kind of p2w concept as you can sell all items from cash shop. It's in open beta right now tho so much new content is coming. It has alot classes to choose from. Leveling tho isn't any challenge, but alot to do when u reach endgame.
Dragons prophet tho reequires a bit better pc to play. DOnt know about your specs. You can try to catch alot of dragons and raise them in this massive world. It has action style combat so u can dodge attacks and feels pretty interactive when doing it. There is also decent play customization and alot to do in endgame. Recommended!
what keept me playing for a long time is
swtor. i realy like the pvp and pve endgame i would say is best next to wow. maybe even better?
rift is also fun
even like lotro. but for me combat and movment feels abit od
