Okay so WoO? Wizard of OZ...Hear me out!
There is a long boring part at the beginning where Dorothy's character gets established (notice out protagonist is a girl. Because even if your a guy you'd rather look at a girl all day)...
Near the completion of which she has to rescue and then have as a follower a useless pet.
So, there is character creation. Then she meets the newb tutor to learn basic controls and wonder about what her character will be like.
Then during an upheaval she catches a glimpse of the main villain...
Then it's off to newb town where she unintentionally sets herself apart as marked for greatness...
This is accomplished by beating an enemy she doesn't even realize was a boss because it was scaled to newb combat level. From which she gets her item of power. Bad roll though, turns out it's cursed and can't come off.
Her first quest giver directs her to follow a sometimes confusing, often misleading golden trail to her next destination ( the first large city).
Along the way she forms a party with people who don't yet understand how to play their class.
With her new companions they run from some Ent's that really were not a huge threat.
Get really close to their destination one of their party members temporarily dc's and they go afk.
They finally get there and instead of turning in their quest they head strait for gear upgrades.
Make some bad cash shop choices...
Then they turn in their quest and get told that they are newbs, undeserving of real rewards and must go do more.
Then they goto go do a rescue quest in a dungeon and beat a boss. And, they loot the boss's weapon as proof of victory.
They turn their quests in and the rewards are not quite what they though they were going to be.
Disillusioned, Dorothy logs off...
And, when she finally decides to try the game again none of her friends play any more, her class has been nerfed, and the game has been horribly mismanaged.
...I rest my case.

Good but I think you forgot the most important similarity:
"At first it seems like you're in a wonderful and exciting world but as you stay in the world longer you realize you're just being manipulated by an an unseen older man with illusions and tricks and eventually you just want to go "home"."
+1
...Also, let's meme some of these for funzies.
Offcourse ...
Unless you learn to accept this fact as being a neccesary evil to have fun and dont worry about it any longer, then you can leave the yellow brick road behind and finally explore the rest of that world that we never got to see.
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
A couple of the pics will not show on my PC, or have vanished.
Absolutory brilliant, I look forward to another skit based on the second movie. There Dorothy could realise how disillusioned with MMOs she had become.
Iunno this first thing was pushing the bounds of my creativity...and they went deep with that. There have been a few good and bad sequels as both books and movies. One I liked was tin man. [Spolier alert] It is set in Oz but about 400 or so years into Oz's future passed the time of dorothy...Feels like it was a creative remake at first. Until you get to the end and the main heroin character finds herself at dorothy's tomb.
...Actually Oz might be a pretty good setting for an MMORPG. There is definitely enough fiction for it to draw on. And the world has been realized in enough different ways that that you can get away with a lot aesthetically.
Also, about the pics thing. those are just linked from google images, so In dunno about them. They are all resized to fit here using the sites tools for that. Might need to right click > "view image" (that will also give you full resolution though and some of them are pretty large so be warned).
Unfortunately there is an invisible barrier on either side. And the beautiful off in the distance is mostly a 2d backdrop. But you do have a nice illusion of spaciousness. High aesthetics if not great graphical fidelity...I mean it is a little dated.
[For any still confused...Yes, this is a spoof topic. But, ironically not off base. It's sort of to say...Analogical and comparative representation feels more true the more parallels you can draw. And, that when we discuss MMO's, we should be careful about making gross generalizations. Feel free to join in on the fun. Basically the idea here is the serious *wink wink* discussion of how most MMO's are or are not copying the wizard of oz.]
