StarTrek MMORPG

image I saw in my PCGamer mag that Perpetual Entertainment is working on a Startrek mmorpg. It sounded really cool. They were talking about how you would first pick a species go to a tutorial Starfleet academy and then you would be assigned to a ship and you would have skills like medical, science, security, engineering, and command. it would be set after the last movie Startrek Nemesis, but they said they would add stuff from all the shows like time travel and alternate dimensions and you could meet Characters from the show's. Perpetual said they were trying to get people from the shows to lend there voices for there characters like Picard,Worf, Riker, and the others. They also said that when you got to high enough in rank you could command your own ship with npc characters and people playing there character's. Another thing was guilds, they said if you commanded a ship and others have a ship you could form armada's and do masive ship battle's with hostiles. They also are doing planet combat you would beam down to do a mission and that would be like a first pirson shooter. If everything is done the right way, it sounds like it could be a great game. They said they plan to do beta in 2006 and maybe release 2007.

Yes, STAR TREK ONLINE Looks very good, well better than good.

I would bet that they are going to be closer to that 2007 date than 2006.. It sounds like they are really trying to come up with some good ideas. I don't know about working up to commanding your own ship, that does seem to favor a select part of the player base. Perhaps they have something for that in mind, but as a gamer with limited time I would hate to buy a game and then pay my monthly fee and have to wait for weeks or months before I could captain the ship.

Witty saying to amuse you goes here.

Anyone know how old Perpetual is?  I never heard of them and then suddenly they show up making two MMORPG's at once, neither of them seem to have much going for them other than stuff anyone could make up in their bedroom with a decent comp.  Oh they have a Star Trek license I suppose. Great.  Cuz we all know how well popular sci-fi licenses have gone with MMORPG's before eh?  SWG's still in paid beta freakin years after it "launched".  Big license games like this are just a cash cow and usually end up treating us players and fans of the original licenses like dirt.  I killed 8 jedi in SWG but ya won't hear my character's name in the new SW movie.  And so you shouldn't, but I shouldn't have even seen a jedi let alone been able to fry 'em.  If you're gonna do a license game keep it the hell out of the core material I say.  What's the betting that just because everyone wants a Galaxy class starship like the Enterprise, they get 'em?  They'll cave in to the $$$ just like Sony did.

Their website is http://www.perpetual.com/ - I see no trace of previous games coming from Perpetual itself. My guess is that it's a fairly new company brought together by some movers and shakers in the MMO industry that decided to work together. They had to have something to gain the Star Trek license.

That hippie Rodenberry's vision was a little to happy for me so I can't imagine getting excited about thisimage All you can do is prey that someone spills a gallon of gasoline on their project server...

erk - star trek mmorpg: how dreadful.

it would be populated with the hardest of hard core fans which would go ferengi on newbies and players who aren't absolutly completely into the game.

Star Trek is a tired old institution now.

Forum signatures are stupid and annoying. I've turned mine off.

Yea that game should really be made, it would be a nice game to play. I do hope they break away from this rather tedious system of leveling and add something innovative in this game.
