Wired connection when no port?

JakeSimJakeSim Member RarePosts: 884
I want to move my pc from my basement to my room, but I don't have a Internet port on my second floor. Is this possible to get a wired connection up here somehow?
Please come check out my stream. All the love is appreciated!

Depends, but the most basic solution without you having to resort to laying cables through your house wiring would be probably 2 power line ethernet adapters. Those use power sockets to send network signals between your modem and your computer.

But the best option would be for you to contact someone you know that works with networking and help you with that locallly.

Oh, and congrats on finally leaving the basement. ./jk

How well would 2 adapters work as compared to being plugged into an Internet port or w.e?

    thanks bruh

You may be able to drill a hole through a wall and run an ethernet cable through that way, though there are many reasons why that might not be an option for you.

Failing that, you may want to look into a power line network.

It's more or less the same thing as having a cable between your PC and your router. It uses the power lines as the cable and modulates ethernet packets through it (sort of).

Can't remember the attenuation values and all that but I'm positive it's better than a single 100m eth5E cable.

It's pretty easy to install, you put one adapter on the power sockets near the router and connect an ethernet cable to it and then an adapter near your PC power socket and a ethernet cable from it to your PC.

Depending on brand they have indicators on the adapters that they are synced.

Check the info about them before you buy.

If you can't drill or use the power route, run the ethernet cable across the ceiling and use a blind kit (or if you're lucky, having cornices) to hide the cable. The cabling isn't very big and easily hidden and/or painted over to match the decor.

Careful with the lenght of the cable and dont bend or squash it, ever, but that's also an option.

In the old days of the internet wireless didn't exist. Had to be rather creative to run cabling through. Doorways force the ceiling route. ;)
