EQNL: Combat before April ?

Combat will be at either the very end of alpha or the start of closed beta. The main hangup with that system is that mobs cannot be introduced into the world yet. "The thing that's stopping us from putting monsters onto the game is that we do not yet have pathfinding code written that works with changeable voxels." In other words, monsters can't just follow points on a path, so a whole new AI server has to be in place to handle calculations on the fly, allowing mobs to move around on ever-changing terrain.

Additionally, once liquid is in the game, players will be able to drown as well as burn in lava. On top of that, falling damage will eventually ensure that players will get hurt if they jump off a mountain without having a grappling hook or gliding. And the ability to slide up mountains will be a thing of the past once those mechanisms are put into place.

Im sorry but I cannot really understand this , maybe Im just slow or something. It takes a huge company like SOE to write ai code that takes that long for monsters? Voxel games have been around awhile now and all the info is out there. Hell even Unity has a voxel version of their engines now. I have been playing voxel games for well over two years now and none of them launched alpha or beta without monsters. Does this mean SOE literally just started making this game or something and immediately sold rights into the alpha as soon as the terrain and first avatars were made? 7 days to die minecraft planet explorers realm explorer etc I can keep going and going all in alpha or beta and all had monsters and most of a game playable as soon as they opened up players to the world. I just do not understand the draw to this game at all is it because it has everquest in its name? There is like a million times better voxel games coming out or already out with about 100 times more features in them that look a HELL of a lot better. I guess smedley really has everyone on this site drinking his special cool aid or something because coming from someone who plays voxel games almost daily, this game is a freaken joke.

maybe i have low expectations but i didnt expect combat to be added until after release

yeah Im not really trying to be negative about the game itself as I enjoyed the eq titles but man this game I cannot see in any way shape or form just a bandwagon jump to voxel based games since they are getting so big now and Smedley literally just making people pay for a unfinished game to fund his project. If he wants to make a true voxel game he needs to create more than just a voxel world , the things that make these games so much fun is the survival aspects and the mods over time. If you are not managing your food, water, crafting sleep etc they get pretty boring pretty fast as you can only remake your castle or house so many times before your bored to death.  Ive been watching the twitch streams of this game and reading up on it as I enjoy voxel games but man this game doesnt seem to be offering anything at all to it other than the name everquest. Hopefully it comes a long well and they get in the fun parts of voxel games.

I think it is because others live in a real world? There are not million times better voxel games on the horizon with 100 times the features, that simply is not reality. This game is still in alpha, the code for putting mobs in wasn't a high priority before, now they are working on it. why does this surprise you?

That sounds good, I am sure they do not want people to be able to bug mobs by digging trenches or something and then killing them in a hole or something.  I am sure their will still be problems with it, as games without terraforming the land have these problems still, let alone being able to make traps for the monsters, or them maybe having varying ability to recognize the trap.

do your homework on voxel games please there are a ton of others around right now in alpha with about 100x the features. A better looking one right off the bat is star forge google it. Go look at 7 days to die also granted thats zombie based. Voxel games have been around way with smooth terrain and there are some really good ones out there. Like I said I do not hate SOE or everquest, but I do see this as a crowd funded project from smedley  without a kickstarter pledging system.

It is easy to do and leaves no worry for constantly finding issues.FFXI allows mobs to climb up walls or trees or whatever, that way you cannot find any way to exploit them..per say.Of course gamer's will ALWAYS be looking for ways to exploit, that is a given but at l;east it limits it to the minimum.

I can point to an easy exploit and why you need to copy FFXI.

With Landmark you could simply build  a narrow passage to lure mobs in,then jump up a few times and you have a whole corral of mobs to kill. You could also make it so the final exitt is just big enough for the player hitbox but not the mobs. That would severely limit the mobs size or you end up with tons of exploiting.

I see no perfect way SOE can pull this off.

Also how about moving doors,i suspect this game won't have any realistic moving doors? If they did how would a creature open the door ?Too many flaws in this system.Yes i know it is a first stab by a mmorpg and lots to learn, but i see it struggling badly to be anything more than Minecraft part two.

How about ANY type "movers"? What if i wanted to make a trap door or a hidden secret wall that moves?

I guess this means the entire building will ONLY be done in an instance zone where there are no mobs, kind of defeats thew hole purpose no?

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

They can easily make it so mobs don't spawn on claims. And there you go, unless you led a mob to your claim any intricate traps you've created would be useless for catching mobs.

Or they can make it so mobs have the ability to break your shit if it gets in the way of it trying to kill you. Problem solved.

As far as herding the mobs and using a small hole to escape. You can fix that by enabling mobs to dig as well. Also enable them to jump gaps if the distance close enough for them to make the jump.  - Problem solved.

As far as doors, allow them to destroy doors. If you agro a mob and you run through a door. The mob will try to beat it down. Or if it's something that has a higher level of intelligence, allow them to open it.  - Problem solved.

I figured combat would be in Beta.  Alpha implies major features aren't in the game yet, and Beta implies all MAJOR features are in the game even if they aren't completed.  I'd assume combat is a major feature, so I figured it would be in the beta.

Combat will not be in game any time soon. Combat animations (you hit some kind of a target, say) can easily be.

You can dig and change the word outside of your claim as well so this would not help that much.

I'm not exactly a huge fan of EQN's art style. but its easily better looking than most, if not all, those other voxel games. 7 days to die has absolutely horrible graphics. your obviously exaggerating 100x.

I suggest before you start critizing something you obviously don't care for you should fully learn about what it is you talking about. Maybe read Smeds blog abotu his views on Sandbox's and the direction he sees mmorpg going. That should be enough to satisfy some of your thoughts.

This is not just a voxel game. And its not a dupe. They have said before that their is a possibility that Landmark with surpass Next in expectations.

Cause mobs will act differently than all other games before hand, they wont just be standing in an area twiddling there thumbs, SoE is using a thing called story brick which allows to give mobs needs and demands so they act uniquely compared to to other mobs.
