The game will be f2p in about a year, taking bets.

Played it, and TBH, I am holding off until i hear good things about this game. Its not bad, its not good, but I just want this game to excel in both MMO wise and TES wise. So until then, I am holding off

First, thanks for the article.  I thought it was a good unbiased look at the game.

So much venom out in MMO-land..Game hasn't even launched yet and the haters have been hating. Don't want to play it?  Fine.  Play something else but spare everyone the diatribe!  I love the negative comments about Elder Scrolls in general and how this game stinks too. (Sic)  Here's a big stretch - Wait for it.... Developers of an Elder Scrolls MMO are probably looking to have their game look and feel like and Elder Scrolls game... I know..hard to believe.

Based on videos I have seen, this does look and feel like an Elder Scrolls game.  The bigger challenge in my mind is adapting that fantastic gaming experience into a group setting i.e. a MMO and having a similar experience for players.  Will it mirror that experience?  No.  Will it come close enough to meet players' expectations?  That's the question.  I for one am looking forward to the game.

So who ever has the money to pay for a fast rig (P2W), will win at the combat game.  Just look at SWG:CU (similar action combat), and Tera(SWG:CU try number 2 at combat).  Why do some players like action combat over RPG combat(Tab Targeting)?  Because it exploits the hardware of 75% of the gaming population.

Did you........my god....did you just call Action combat as Pay-to-win? There could not be a Facepalm imgae that i could post here that would summarise my reaction reading this.

Holy shit, just get a better machine or don't buy the game. Case closed. There are requirements which are made public.

And this is why action combat games fail.  Faced with the reality that action combat relies on exploiting hardware and not skill, the problem is dealt with the typical solution of “let them eat cake.”

I explained why it is P2W, and you didn’t bother to address that.  Why?  Because it is.  Now back to the BBC.

Well you clearly don't even have a clue what pay-to-win is from your post.

As to your computer, I was just down at Microcenter and they have reconditioned HP computers for about $250 that would run rings around your rig.  Towers are extremely inexpensive right now  because they have lots of them in stock.  Trying to tell me yours is faster than 100 other people is pretty unbelievable.  Heck some of my neighbors have better computers and they just use them for web browsing.

You don't like the game and everyone has the right to their opinion.  Just don't go overboard with outrageous claims or no one will believe you.

Exactly what do I get for my money??

No, not paying for this one.- I'm happy to wait and see how it works out.

WTH didnt you try it out this weekend then? there were free keys everywhere..

I did, and it didn't tell my anything about the game past lvl 30 or the endgame, all it did was reinforce how little we know about the game at this point - again, - ONLY two months before launch and still under NDA.  And yes, I find that concerning and I will not buy it as it stands now.

My personal experience is quite the opposite - the games I enjoyed playing long term were also the games I enjoyed first few levels. If the beginning of the game is lacklustre not many chances that the game will improve middle game - usually first levels are great and polished then you discover the lack of quests, grind, limited areas to explore (hello AOC !). Of course different people enjoy different things - one can be bored by beginning quests in a game while other can find them great and engaging.

Totally agree...if it's crap in the beginning when they want to set the hook, it's probably going to be more of the same as it goes deeper.

I strongly agree with your no.2 on The Bad Stuff list.

Phasing on quests is my biggest (and so far 1, but I am not sure if I can get through that) complaint against game. It is very strange (ok its absolutely retarded) that players around you see different NPCs than you (if you are on different part of quest). How can you feel immersed in such world? Seriously. I dont want to play single player RPG on server with thousands of players. Whats point in that? Chating? If player A and player B goes into place A, they should see same place A!

to me I find the art style a bit different. It looks a bit more stylized, the art style and colors just look more cartoon like compared to skyrim. Personal thing but I'm not into it.

Only an issue on quests that are in an "instance", but yep.

that seems a bot odd other reviews have said that if you are on the same quest but different stages of it you can not be in the same phase as quests effect the environment you are in.  Will be interesting to see which it is.

By the way OP nicely written.  I read both reviews on this site and it is interesting how two people who supposedly played the same game see it totally different.

Where are the mid to end game PvE tests? Only behind closed doors, and this late into beta. Come on people, wake up already.

That would be because there are the weekend stress test betas and the concurrent PTS beta going on.  Not sure what real beta xp you have but this is common. Most real betas do not life their NDA until almost release.  Which here is just under 2 months away.  There really is a difference between the  "open Beta" many games have and a real beta.  For example in both DDO and EQ2 we in the closed beta still had the NDA on us right up until a few days prior to release while  there were stress test betas and finally open betas going on that were totally separate from ours.
As for bugs I would remind people that in the runup to WoW's release there were major issues not simple bugs.  They had a 1 week stress test in which the servers crashed the first day and it took them 4 days to get them back up to finish out the test and that was approximately the same time out that this game is.

Too bad they choose to go with phasing - yes, they made wotlk storytelling better than previous expansions but also made questing annoying if your friend was not in same phase as you.

Yep, there are loading screens. Not many, as zones are really quite massive, and most buildings don't have them. But instances do, and moving from one zone to a next does.

Wrong and wrong.. Dont know if im allowed to type this. But yes when changing islands and entering instances there are loading, also when using a shrine. However when you walk from one zone to another there arent!!!!

    OP get ur facts straight.

It would depend on how you define zones.  As the op said they are huge in this game.

A game slow to level in, and challenging to do so, sounds awesome.

I am not going to say this will be the best game to come out in the genre, or even in the top five, maybe not the top ten, but it will at least be a pleasant MMORPG diversion.

He took hours to get to 10, but he is trying to preview the game so he is doing everything. I will bet $100 that someone will be max level in 3 days because the game is no different than any other MMO made in a long time, easy to just get XP and level up quickly.

if you want a slow leveling MMO, you may want to look into Korean MMOs or TSW which has no levels, something this game should have done.

Do not think says Korean mmos and slow lvling in the same sentence is correct.  From the few I have played, to include the ones that a Korean company pays and western company to design fro them, it is the opposite you lvl so fast it is redictulaus.  You get leveled gear only to have out levled before the new  leather smile has faded.

I explained why it is P2W, and you didn’t bother to address that.  Why?  Because it is.  Now back to the BBC
Please goggle what P2W means. To help you I will give an example.  You go to a cash shop and for real U.S> dollars you either by tokens or some form of coinage usually that you then use to buy maxed out gear or permanent stat or ability boosts. Thus you now have an unfair advantage over someone who does not have the real life money to spend.  Since this game is sub based it is the furthest from P2W you can be.

To be honest I think that most of the people hating the game has nothing to do with the game itself.  They against sub based games and want it to fail  thus they are hopping the more they scream the more people will not even try the game.  Hell there were over 500k beta keys this weekend available yet most of these people did not even try it.

So why would I jump ship from Skyrim to ESO? So I can buy another game at full price and pay a sub? So far take out the pvp, all we have is a continuation of Skyrim.

You know that this game is encompassing all of the places in previous TES games?  Skyrim is just one part of ESO, it's going to have Cyrodil and four more areas, all connected in the one game!  I don't know how you're getting that this is a continuation of Skyrim...

The main idea of this game, the main selling point can not be the story line and joy of leveling save that for single player rpg's.

This is mmorpg's people want to play with their friends and they want to progress. They do not want to play a single player game until they reach a certain point and then suddenly the game drastically changes and you can suddenly play with your friends and suddenly all immerision is broken.

But hey you bought the game for $60 and it took you 4 months x $15 a month to reach level cap, before you got to the main idea of the game which is pvp? So now your $120 in and maybe you don't like the pvp, oh well thanks for the $120, btw you can't come back and play the single player experience that you enjoyed unless you pay us $15/month

I knew this was a bad idea from the get go - Impossible task!!!

Let this game not be testimony for sub based games, it is no such thing.

Have you even be in beta??

If not i think you stop posting i was in beta this weekend with my  gf and we was group up all the time and we could basically be in group all time beside when we go "instance" for fighting guild and when we went talk to The Prophet other that we was group and did everything together so tell me that need be solo player all way to end game is lie.

So you think game cost to much but honest the money you would spend on buy ESO and pay per month is almost the same as you have been spend on WoW every month and if one of them how only like F2P well then you have most like spend more money on F2P game then would do on P2P. For honest it is myth F2P is cheap then P2P for at the end of day you end up spend more money on F2P then on P2P. But if want to sit around wait for ESO to be become cheaper go ahead.

It feel more like what you have been write is alot of BS for it sound to me the you have not even play the beta yet and it feel like you honest don't know what hell you are talk about to be total honest with you.

That being say i think ESO feel really unique and no one can come and tell me that you are play you char wrong and that need follow this build like in WoW to be sure you get kick from group or raid just for you not do what the community is right amount of dmg and yesterday both me and my gf end up just rid around enjoy the landscape just for gfx is so good in this game and i say to my gf to bad WoW don't have this gfx then it will look  marvellous she agree with me and end up found whole village that was under attack honest ESO is game full of surprise i can't wait to get to rest of world and see it.

I don't see it that way...

I think that it is becoming obvious that TESO should be a lot better than it is (based on how good ES games have been) and that for a lot of people, it is not worth a premium box price, plus a $15 sub, plus the CE imperial race stuff.

No one is even saying it is a bad game, it is just a very expensive average game, and that is what knocked TOR out of P2P land.

Agreed and its funny how some refuse to believe this.  Its for those few Tes players that wanted a mmo and other mmo fans.  Every Tes player i know thinks its just a money grab from the parent company on a world famous ip. It really looks generic too.  But if you spend money on a pre order you have to strongly defend that choice. I can't wait for it to come out and just watch the show. And how about they have been working on this for close to 7 years and this is what they got.

Every new TES game gets more watered down, forgetting the intricate, well-crafted lore (that turns 20 years old next month) in favour of catering to the masses with generic storylines and making things generally easy (I could go on forever about why I hate levelled loot/enemies in TES).

Yup Morrowind is lost in all this. 20 years ago man what an amazing game that was. I miss good rpg's that were made for just PC. Once that game ported to xbox the series went downhill. I have high hopes for some of the single player rpg's coming out and most of them from indie companies which i think will same the PC rpg genre.
