Gaming journalism has quickly become a very pathetic and corrupt business. I would be shocked if there were still a large number of people who base a large portion of their judgment of the game based on those reviews. At this point I am more inclined to read the extremely biased user reviews such as on this forum over them.
Originally posted by rodingo Sure it could be some conspiracy that people are being paid to badmouth the game. However, I think the more realistic approach is that they are just saying what they feel about the game.

writers will say whatever they need to say to get people to read their articles or subscribe to their youtube channels.
i mean, if i took these "reviews" to heart, i would think that ESO was one of the worst mmo's ever created and i know that isn't true so something isn't right here.
The OP has been a member since 2006, and has some 48 posts. Not new at all, and has some good questions.
I didn't mean no disrespect to the op, just that the negativity of this site- not the ones running it either- just a lot of the posters here. I am sry that I gave off the wrong meaning.
The fact you just had to explain yourself should give you some insight to this thread.
Been on the MMO scene for a very long time, and I've seen companies like MMORPG.com and other review sites suck the **** of games that have been terrible, just because they have big names.
Age of Conan, Warhammer and Guild Wars 2 being the most notable. Anyone who was an MMO veteran when these games were releasing probably remembers thinking these games would be the next WoW, or the next Jesus Christ, etc. That's what the review companies were spouting.
And then you actually got to play the games... and yeah, we know the history.
My point is, why is it all of a sudden a game like ESO, which I thoroughly enjoy and think is so much better than anything that has released in years, is getting such terrible reviews, while games which almost no one enjoyed - received such AWESOME reviews?
What's going on? Did Zenimax not pay someone? Is this an organized plot by a competitor? I hate to be the conspiracy theory guy, but I don't understand. Or, is this just some sort of meme which has spread across the internet like wildfire, or doge? "ESO sucks, not worth $15, armor painted on, blah blah blah" (Anyone else notice the reviews all use the exact same terminology? I had never heard anyone say "armor painted on" before ESO, yet I've heard it in EVERY-SINGLE-REVIEW!)
I'm a skeptic, and I think some BS is going on..
What is more likely - that ESO is a not a very good game in the first 10 levels and reviewers are calling it like it is
OR
Some batshit crazy conspiracy?
Sometimes the reasons are so clear that one has to come up with conspiracy theories to dismess them.
Please.
OR
most of the reviewers were expecting to play a single player ES game when they should have been expecting to play an mmo based in the ES world.
OR
Many of the reviewers are greedy and want more hits on their site and got burned from the past few mmo's that crashed and burned even after they gave them great reviews and are now playing it safe.
I completely agree with you OP. Remember the days of saving your dollars and buying that badass game and playing the hell out of it wether it stunk or not. This site when originally started was a little different in the day. Now its just become a bash fest for every game that comes out. I cant count the many times ive take the opinion of reviews and avoided a game like the plague only to find out later it was a great game. But then again if your as old in gaming as I am, the days of EQ,UO,DAOC are gone. People look for that nostalgia...never find it.... and make a piss fest after..
So you think that people are paid shills and that they are being paid to shit-can this game?
I'm going to pretend you are kidding.
So you think when hundreds of millions of dollars are a stake, companies wouldn't shill out a few thousand here and there to create bad press for their competitor?
I'm going to pretend you are kidding.
You are so wrong on this - its absurd.
Game companies would never pull this off, none of them do it, it would be a complete waste of resources and money.
Its actually beyond absurd, sorry.
Really? Pretty sure one of the mods here have said this kind of stuff goes on and they try and keep it under control. Might have been to hype games but who is to say its not to create negativity also?
Some of the people in some of these threads are so against some of these games its hard to think a sane person would carry on a vendetta against them for so long with little or no reason other than they dislike a game. Not even talking about ESO some of these other games that people just hound forever, or is it they are obsessed? Who knows?

is it batshit crazy to write or report on what you think your readers or youtube subscribers want to hear? i don't agree they are paid money straight up for what they say good or bad, but it is indeed money to them to make those readers happy by reporting what they want to hear to keep them coming back for more.
that's not a conspiracy theory, that's just journalism. i wonder how many more subscribers angryjoe got after his review of ESO? that's straight cash homey. lol

Angry joe actually stands to lose a lot more revenue for "bad mouthing" a game. Not many companies are going to give him access to unreleased games after that one review.

You have an opposite opinion on the game. Doesn't mean the reviewers / people who don't enjoy the game are part of one big conspiracy.

I'm suspicious why a server stress test with a NDA in place is dressed up as a BETA and that 15 minutes of gameplay opinions is confused as being a "review".
it was blizzard working with the NSA to plant thought bombs in swag that was given to all these reviewers. once the trigger is clicked they randomly go insane and give a bad review on any game that might be a Wow killer.

Age of Conan got an average 80/100 metacritic score.
Warhammer Online got an average 86/100.
Guild Wars 2 got a 90.
But score is for not. It's about the wording of the context of the actual review itself. Age of Conan was tongue lashed by critics for it's lacking of content and polish post Tortage Island. Warhammer was equally lashed for it's nonsense map designs and poor execution. Out of the 3, GW2 was praised the most by critics and players alike for a very [still so] enjoyable experience (mind you, the Personal Story still got reamed for it's focus of Trahern and very uneventful Zhitan fight at the end).
Your personal views are your personal views. See yourself as a minority with that enjoyment. The reviews are split between two parties: Elder Scrolls fans and MMORPG fans (sure more than a few are both, but that's neither here nor there).
-TESO as an MMORPG is a generic, bland fantasy MMORPG that has very little to offer in a now overly saturated genre;
-while at the same time, TESO does not live up to being a true Elder Scrolls game like the previous games (limited classes w/ skills, no Thieves Guild, no vampirism, no werewolves, no Blackhand, etc.).
That is the truth behind the views of critics and many who have tasted the flavorless waters of the game's state. The blandness means that it's not very fun for players to enjoy and the lacking of features means that those that enjoy the series would rather much better be invested with one of the already existing games. Most of the critics also make note of the lack of polish the game seems to show in it's state that is only 1.5 months from launching (a very short time at that).
