Old Genres Never Die

They just get killed off by lousy game developers.

This is my realisation after playing the brilliant Warhammer 40K "Dawn of War". I know its been out for a while but these days I dont buy much stuff till its in the bargain bin. Pre ordering for example is almost not in my vocabulary any more... been burned way too many times.

But Warhammer 40K is just awesome! I really thought RTS was basically dead as a genre, 40K not only breathes new life into it, it has recreated the genuine fun and WOW factor of the first time you played games like C&C and Warcraft 1. I havnt laughed and gasped so much while be genuinely challenged by AI in a long time.

The reason I posted this here is, it has really given me new hope for MMO's by reminding me that if you do something right you can still make a great new game within an old concept.

If you havnt played it, do yourself a favour. If MMO developers took the same care and applied the same imagination and polish to their products as Games Workshop has with 40K we would truly have some great MMO's

Now Im going back to play more lol image

I might have to try that game now.  You have a good point.   The potential to make good games will always be there,  just takes the right people to do it.  I don't think I'll ever completely lose faith in the genre,  the best is yet to come.

Pacman Online, $40 up front, $15 a month?  Shiiiiii, I'm gettin' a deal, coulda made double on boyz like me, Pacman for life!

What greater tribute to free will than the power to question the highest of authority? What greater display of loyalty than blind faith? What greater gift than free will? What greater love than loyalty?

Warhammer is a pretty damn good game.

However i'm not sure tweaking a mmorpg will actually result in a fresh/fun enough experience. WoW does that and its fairly poor (admittedly too dumbed down to attempt a comparison with Warhammer/RTs games).

Let's face it once you get over the newbie amazement of playing in a world with 1000's of other people, mmorpgs are more grind than fun. Especially since all the major ones are based on exactly identical mechanics.

I don't think Vanguard will be amazing for its time. It might faithfully recreate an EQ feel but that will be too little too late.

What we need is a major publisher with deep pockets to do a game like Roma Victor.

Not to quibble, but Warhammer 40K is not a "genre".

The reference is to RTS as the genre.

I hope you're not suggesting that RTS is a genre in threat of extinction.

Dawn of War is awsome but MMO's take plenty longer then those games and MMO 's are way harder to satisfy its croud. I'll check Vanguard out and see what its like.

Well I had wondered about this having played so many truly average RTS games I kind of assumed I had seen everything the genre had to offer, but 40k has loads of bright new ways to spark it up. Other developers should take note and use their imaginations more.

If you'd like to suggest it's a bit stale I can see that argument. But RTS games are constantly being released, and amongst the most recent releases we've seen some really strong candidates for long-term powerhouses.

I don't mind the idea of challenging the development community to keep thinking outside the box, but it's a bit of a stretch to suggest the RTS genre is in trouble. Ever since the original WarCraft it has gotten nearly as much attention (and even innovation) as the FPS genre. It's entirely alive and well from what I can see.

Exaggerations don't make the point well, they just get attention. That's a touch trollish, and that's why I challenged the statement.

Ian Im just going to assume you have lost your bottle of happy pills for now...

Please dont call me "trollish" we have both been around long enough to know each others seriousness in relation to posting on this site.

Please show me where I said "the RTS genre is in trouble...."

I have observed that the RTS genre has it share of average titles... I compared it to the slew of average titles entering the MMO genre.... in my mind its a valid comparision. If its not in yours... cool Im not going to argue..thats your opinion... this is mine... Im not calling you names because you disagree with me.

I observed that if the current MMO developers took the same fresh approach to their products as GW has with 40K it would be doing us all a favour. Again if you dont agree.... more power to you...image

But dont label me a troll for making a post about a topic I genuinely care about. Just read it... post your opinion and take a chill pill.

    image

And remember... We find comfort in those that agree with us and growth in those that dont. Thanks for the growth.
