I liked ESO, but I'm still not sure if I'll buy or not, as it wasn't great.
If it was F2P there is 0% chance I'd get it though. Being a very old school mmorpg gamer... It's to the point I would rather pay monthly for a decent game than play a great game with a cash shop.
tldr: ESO chose the best payment model for a real mmo.

So the part you hate about F2P is ok to do as long as it's P2P?
I have no problem with the P2P model as long as the game is worth the price for it. But when they start putting pay gates in a game that is suppose to be 100% available to you with that monthly fee, it raises some serious red flags and to me that is much much worse then a F2P game. Because they are out right scamming you.
I also have played plenty of F2P games and P2P games, and honestly ... If you think all F2P games are bad, you are biased and have not given any a real chance.
True, the only F2P game I could stick with it for longer is Team Fortress 2.
^5. Your entitled to your opinion. I don't happen to agree but to each their own.
No matter how cynical you become, its never enough to keep up - Lily Tomlin
The only "true" F2P game I enjoy (and hugely) is War Thunder, but that's not an MMORPG.
The only F2P MMORPG's that I can stomach are the ones that used to be P2P and then were forced to convert to F2P when their subs dwindled. The rest are junk.
Yeah I find it ironic that OP would turn down a "great game" with Rift's F2P model but apparently are fine with ESO's cash shop BS. Double standard much?
Seeing what an MMO designer can do with a F2P model in a game like GW2 - i feel like i have been cheated out of a lot of money in the last 5-10 years with Sub based model.
When it's done right, it's a great system, much better then Sub. ( And a proof of that is Gw2, which is 1,5 years old and still have 51 server - haven't closed a single one ).
However when it done wrong like in SWTOR, LOTRO - the only thing that keep this games around is their big name and the awesome work of Tolkien, G. Lucas - and all the people that worked on the movies. It's just a shame, that they are still milking this titels.
Yeah, and there are fewer and fewer of these old school "Subscribe and get all the features" games out there anyway. Look at the ESO Imperial Edition as a perfect example. WoW is also introducing a cash shop. Soon enough, there will be no differentiation anyway, so you might as well get used to it. I think you'll see more games with a model like SWTOR and Rift in the future.

What happens if your fav mmorg switches to f2p with its successor? ofc you will play it.
rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar
Now playing GW2, AOW 3, ESO, LOTR, Elite D
I agree completely.
Game companies will find all kinds of innovative ways to squeeze more cash out of gamers. Their shareholders and investors demand it.
Ironically, many of those shareholders and investors are pension fund managers, who are under severe pressure from THEIR investors to perform well.
And those investors that are giving the fund managers sleepless nights are none other than you and me demanding a better return on our pension fund...
What goes around, comes around...
I don't like SWTOR F2P model - if it wasn't a Star Wars titel, i wouldn't even look twice at a game with such crazy model.
These are the things I dislike most about F2P games.
(1) The community. If anyone can download and play, there's no reason to care about the way you act. Chat is filld with vulgarities. People are less patient. The counter argument is "Waht about WoW's community?" In wow, it's "like" a free to play community only because there are millions of more people playing. You remember the douche bags because you run into a lot of them by virtue of having a game with millions of subscribers. This is less of the case with smaller P2P games. For example FFXI and FFXIV have pretty good communities. Both are P2P. Rift and Lotro ALSO had great communities when P2P. It may still be the case because you don't get a lot of the mmo hoppers going to these older releases.. hence the community is intact.
(2) BIGGEST REASON (Cash Shop). In F2P the game needs to make money. They make money with having a small portion of their players pay a subscription OR the have a cash shop. The money the game makes has to spend a lot of resources to make more cash shop items for the next content patch. The content patch takes longer to make because half of the resources are going towards cash shop items. So, you either get content every a few months that's watered down, or you only get beefy patches 6 months or in an expansion.
I prefer nice beefy patches like WoW and FFXIV. F2P caters to a "certain type of gamer." Some people are really great with their money and don't spend a dime in the cash shop, but you're the minority. The only reason that your F2P game even exists is because there are sheep who spend $100 a month and pay for the 6 other people that don't spend any money or, spend very little.
I have yet to see a F2P game bring steady, beefy, content patches AFTER going free to play. SWTOR released Rise of the Hutt Cartell but how long after going Free to play did they do that? AND you had to PAY for the expansion (not free to play isi it?) The only reason you should try out a Free ot play game LIKE RIFT is because there is 3 years worth of content. There, you are definetely getting your money's worth. But once you finish that content, how sure are you Rift or SWTOR is going to give you a steady stream of things to do?
People have different preferences... I prefer the P2P model. Subscription doesn't gate me to anything. I ahve access to everything (mounts, pets, content, etct).
Seeing what an MMO designer can do with a F2P model in a game like GW2 - i feel like i have been cheated.... by the loot nerf that forced my hand into the over priced cash shop. -Fixed. (As was my case, others may differ).
And as for not closing servers, why would they when it's free, and so full of leeches and whales that they have no need to close anything?
Your upset that subs cost you x-amount over a time frame, yet don't mind being a whale or worse, a sponge!?!?
Think my head hurts now. :
No trials. No tricks. No traps. No EU-RP server. NO THANKS!
...10% Benevolence, 90% Arrogance in my case!
Even then they dump on you. We (the wifey & I) had played/subbed since beta in Rift, and while granted we stopped playing for a few months between expacs, we held on to our subs, only for them to do away with the EU RP server, all our characters names and all of our friends (cus must stopped instantly, never to look back).
Now that was wasted time and cash. Yes, we could still play. But it's not the same and to be honest the bitterness just won't leave. So, never again! (Sorry Trion you blew it... Forever!).
No trials. No tricks. No traps. No EU-RP server. NO THANKS!
...10% Benevolence, 90% Arrogance in my case!
do you know if that happens its our own fault for paying for it, do you?
This type of scam should not be accepted, and if we dont pay for it they stop making it. Sadly, there will always be dumb people with money that will always fall for these scams and accuse everyone else of being poor and cheap so they feel good about their waste of cash, and companies that take advantage of those people, ruining whole franchises with greed and scams.
We dont need to get used to it, we need to make them stop by keeping our wallets closed.
Over 1,5 years and over 2k hours gameplay in GW2 i only spend 60$ on the " box " 1,5 years ago when i first bought it.
And yet i had and still have access to all content ( except for Living World story - since you can't replay it, once it's gone) and every item in the game.
GW2 is the best game in the market with a cash shop. However, it's not an option for people who love the trinity and raiding. The "content" patches for GW2 every two weeks are really thin.
however, for people who enjoy the pvp, dungeons, and WvWvW, it's probably the best value on the market.
Ditto
However ESO isnt behaving much like a good P2P game should so Ill be holding off on this game for a while ... maybe try Wildstar. Still, if either of those games ever go F2P, its nice to know I can always fall back on FFXIV. It might not be the super awesome game Id spend hundreds of hours on a month playing but its well worth the price if it gives me access to all content and isnt contantly diverting attention to a cash shop. Given their dedication to P2P even in FFXI ...its a safe bet my time wont be wasted.
FFXI, FFXIV, Eve.
WoW has cash shop with in game vanity items for years - now just reintroduced and redesigned a bit if anything. I find it amusing btw that ppl qq about vanity stuff being sold separately in other games (let's face it - imperial edition is nothing but this unless getting mount straight away is so op and unfair for someone). Yet ppl keep forgeting that Blizard does the same thing since like WotLK.
