i am a classic EQ player, needless to say that slow leveling does not bother me.
i can see how it will bother the post wow mmo player, though.
I agree 100% ! I think that some of the post WoW players will "get it" and really enjoy themselves. Personally, I am thrilled with the "old school" feel and pace of TESO - the OP did a great job on this article and am glad she enjoyed her gaming experience!
I'm not into raiding/dungeons so end game has no big allure for me. Slow pace is what will keep me playing this game longer than other games I have played in recent years.
I managed to hit the level cap in GW2 in some ridiculous amount of time at which time I quit the game because there was nothing there that interested me.
I love the slow leveling. I'm from the old days when it took you years to level to maximum in old 2D and 2.5D MMOs. I really miss those days. Back then leveling really didn't feel like leveling, it felt like living. It took so long to level, you really didn't pay attention to your xp bar, and leveling up would surprise you
This is the first mmo i have played in years and probably since SWG where somebody asked me what lvl i was and i didnt know and didnt care. Hell i didnt even know where to find where it showed my lvl lol.
There's 2 reasons why ill be bying elder scrolls online.
1) the pvp (im an ex daoc and finally i see an opertunity again , after all these years, to relive the experiences i had in that game)
2) It feels old-style. Making me feel more immersed, hopefully.
Not in any mmorpg, and ive played many, ive felt like i wanted to hit level cap. Except maybe at some point in daoc because pvp rocked there so being 50 had alot of advantages . For me leveling my char has Always been the best experience. Once you hit level cap its just about standing and waiting for dungeons to farm loot. At least thats how it is in the majority of mmorpgs. I've never seen the point of it.
Also for me without good pvp there's no endgame for me. The loot i farm should have a purpose in pvp which is why i dislike the pvp field being leveled to much in the sense that pve items do not matter in pvp. They should for me.
I actually find it a shame you get bolstered in cyrodill. I'd have preferred to not be bolstered at all. Cyrodill should be something to look forward to after you reach level cap, in my opinion anyway. Sure you should be able to play pvp at earlier level then level cap but that worked fine in daoc. It gave me reasons to head out there and xp with a group and knowing higher level players would kill me in a heartbeat added to the thrill.
I'm a huge fan of slower leveling and time consuming progression. What I'm not a fan of is linear, hand held, uninspiring starter zones that last 4-5 hours.
Fix the starting areas and I'm sold.
Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!
Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!
Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!

The beauty is, eventhough you are not into dungeons/raiding/mass pvp, end game will have something for you, as it will simply be a continuation of the 1-50 leveling experience. Only thing is, it will be the 50+ and 50++ content, where you go to the other factions areas, and quest there, with difficulty bumped up to match you.
This means even if the only thing you really enjoy in the game is the leveling experience, doing quests, exploring and experiencing the story, this will go on for a very long time, even after you hit max lvl
I don't like fast leveling in MMORPG. It's all came from recent popularity of MOBA like games (which I hope will not be target anymore), where all almost same equipped go kick each other every time. Maybe its fun. But where is RPG part here? It's in RPG your level means a lot, its in RPG you may choose something in the beginning what you will not change anymore in the future, its in RPG is your unique path and story.
I'm usually a slow leveler, so I didn't even notice this "slower" leveling in ESO.
What I did notice is that I was doing a lot of stuff that I was really enjoying, and that was while I was still on the FIRST Ebonheart starter island ! I spent almost the whole of Saturday there, lol
Given that most people that complain do so about the starter areas and particularly the Ebonheart one, I think I'm in for a real treat here !
A part of the content locus crowd, I've hit max level in the release months of gameplay with Rift, FFXIV and GW2. Subbing never crossed my mind with those. What will make me want to keep paying the equivalent of a Skyrim DLC every month just to redo the same quests over and over again?
Well then you have Wildstar don't you? You can all ways eat that game as well.
The slow leveling of ESO is good, and the Game feels like it is a living world with lots to do and see but then my attention span is greater than that of a gnat's and I don't have to rush to the end.
Originally posted by Rockniss Is it me or does it feel like every article about ESO the author is stretching to find something positive? Writing about eso is about like walking on thin ice. Must be very careful.
Just you, imo. I auto-discount the fanboi reviews but most of what I've seen have been realistically positive but hardly guarded.
It's not you.
Every article I see here regarding ESO, author is trying to spin lackluster or missing features into "design choices". Next thing I'm going to hear is that combat sucks, but it's OK, since it will make you enjoy the scenery even more. Or did we already have an article like that?
Go read Massively. Over there, they started off with a review that said "I don't like TES games and I didn't like this one. " Seems like that is the journalism you are looking for.
This article hit the nail on the head. Perfectly said.. Now, whether or not this translates into a successful MMORPG remains to be seen, but it definitely is a slower paced, more methodical experience (akin to Everquest or Dark Age of Camelot). I feel if people give it a chance, they will thoroughly enjoy it. Also, the opening analogy to a several course meal is brilliant.
At 19:08 you see her looking at another character. He is level 6 and shows as level 6.
That is one of the issues with Level driven MMO's. It's what really made SWG unique. You never saw that in PreNGE.
For ESO all I know from the view at 19:08 is that he is level 6. I can see he is dual wielding but I don't know much else. Ideally I wouldn't even see his level 6. It would need to be something he shared with me. EVE got this right. You can click a persons employment history, see they were a 2006 player but you have no idea how many SP they have. Not unless they tell you. With SWG PreCU there was no way of knowing where someone had their points besides their weapon and there was little to indicate how many they had in a spagetti build. That mystery really does have powerful impact on the social aspect of an MMO.
Pace of leveling is only a problem if it's a race. Remove the race.
I can admit this. After playing the beta, I am convinced this game has potential that hasn't even been thought of yet, Ironically, I recognized the Starter Areas for what they were (An area they had to make to acclimate ES game only players and MMO gamers only. While there may be overlap, that does not change the need for it.)
It convinced me to invest and see what there is to offer. And I liked it better than Wildstar, though that has great potential too.
I am glad to see that someone else likes to pace yourself and enjoy the the journey and explore the world. It seems most mmo'ers like to fly through like its some kind of teen aged race to coolsville at the end for bragging wrights sake. Kinda pointless and destroys any enriched and immersive experience than if you were to stop and smell the roses. Its sad to see the companies cater to this kind of behavior, in part they actually lose money in the long run. :-P
Here's hoping for immersive game play!
Cheers!

How quaint.
Nothing to do? More like they realized how tiny the number of people who actually raid is, and decided to base their endgame on providing more of the things people actually do like about MMOs.
Peace is a lie, there is only passion. Through passion, I gain strength. Through strength, I gain power. Through power, I gain victory. Through victory, my chains are broken. The Force shall free me.
I think BadSpock highlighted his own issue, i.e. a laptop rather than a desktop.
Laptops should only be used at airports imo.
Playing: Darkfall New Dawn (and planning to play Fallout 76) Favourite games have included: UO, Lineage2, Darkfall, Lotro, Baldur's Gate, SSX, FF7 and yes the original Wizardry on an Apple IIe

Yup. I've been fooling myself trying to keep playing some MMOs on/off on my laptop- hence my current excitement (though reserved) for ESO as it is coming to console and is really the first AAA cross- platform MMO of the next generation!
LOL, "slow" pacing. People are hitting level 20 in a weekend, and thats with bugs and servers breaking down and loading screens that take forever, and only a limited number of lower level quests to work with.
If this game is even half reliable at launch people will be max level before the hard release. (less than 5 days).
As for the crafting and what not. Wasted mechanic. When everyone can make all the same stuff with zero restrictions that is just a bad system. it is OK now because the game hasnt been released and people dont realize crafting is meaningless. Which makes an economy of any kind meaningless. Sure for a while people might buy raw materials to level out crafting but once they see that everyone will be able to make the same things they make they will stop wasting the cash.
There is no focus in this game, no goal.
Really ask people what the 'goal' is and they really cant come up with one. Only 'viable' goal is "to be emperor" which now that we know a little more about the mechanics of PvP wont be nearly as difficult as people thought it would be.
When looting random barrels and chests and water bags is the biggest time consuming feature, and those things contain mostly cooking mats, then its not really a positive.
In the end if the PvP doesnt hook people this game will crash and burn. Like I said that will be for as long as it take everyone who wants to claim they got to be emperor getting it.
