MMO to Sink Some Time Into

So I'm looking for a game I can sink a bunch of time into. I'm right now considering EvE and FFXIV, but I'm open to suggestions. I'm thinking EvE because I've played before and like the community, but I would really need to aggressively find a good corp to want to play. And I'm thinking FFXIV because I like RPGs, ARR is supposed to be great, and a friend of mine plays. I am leaning more towards ARR because I get more of a connection from a character rather than a spaceship, but I can get over that.

That said I'm not sure how much time ARR will take me. Like I said, I'm looking for something I can spend some time with, and, in the words of above friend, I play "more and with greater ferocity." I should be clear that I'm not looking for a time sink. If I want to waste a few hours I'll hit the internet. So something that will make the next few months enjoyable despite more than casual play time.

Both F2P or P2P are fine. No P2W (don't bother responding if all you have to say is "F2P is P2W").
