[Column] EverQuest Next: A Community Building Everything

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Despite my best efforts, I find myself to be a horrible builder. I can craft wonderful ideas in my head, describe them with epic scale in an essay, but end up making balls of dirt on my claim. Luckily, the February 18 Everquest Next Round Table Response gave me hope that I can actually play the game in a way that seems to make sense to me as someone who's horrible at free-form creation: getting other people to help me!

It is the community building aspect of EQN that is the most appealing to me. I have level characters in other games, and will here as well, but the real joy of this world is that WE the players can shape the landscape into something unique across all realms. I am no visionary when it comes to design either but am perfectly willing to server and work toward the vision of those that do possess that awesome talent. I will harvest and refine stone, metals, or whatever else my be needed.

It will take a great deal of organization and coordination.  This could potentially be the most community driven MMO of all time!

Don't want to build or harvest, fine because there is a lot of nasty stuff in the world that would like to tear your city down.

Please Sony, don't screw this up!

Cant wait till all the 'freeform' building has giant penis light houses on hilltops.

Or the giant vagina doorways to castles like in 'patch adams' for the gynecological seminar.

Honestly dude we haven't seen any of this in landmark yet so chill out. The only argument you people ever have against free building is "giant penises". Playing both Landmark and Trove I haven't seen any of this. I think you guys are the ones obsessed with the idea of penises everywhere.

That won't happen in EQN, simply because it cannot.

You know that EQN and EQNL (where you can build as many penises as you want, if that's what you're into) are different games, right?

There is so much possible with these two games, it's hard to comprehend. The Forgelight engine as firmly placed SOE years ahead of the competition.

    Fun times ahead.

I hasn't happened in EQN:L either. I still haven't seen one. I still haven't heard of someone who seen one. Idk people are building stuff like this.

OP, I too am building challenged. You know what I've found though? I'm getting better.

In strange way, me learning to build is akin to me learning a new pvp system. Weird, but equally as challenging.

Yeah, it has. There's a 'penis forest' between my claim on Fault, Serenity, and the hub. There's a video of it on youtube (or vimeo perhaps; I don't recall) that one of the fan sites linked on Twitter a few weeks ago.

Admittedly, they don't stay up for long (I'll finish the sentence here so you'll have to finish the joke in your head).

Besides, my point was that it CAN happen, and not that it does.

I'm no builder, but I'm certainly a harvester and a 'normal' crafter, so I'm hoping the second part will be satiated soon as I've got a plethora of resources across all tiers now.

Not a builder either but Im intrigued.  Amazing seeing the talent of some people.  Would it be possible to build in a tree. I have this idea of using a large tree as the basis for a huge treehouse.  The trunk would be the basement and stairs would be inside the tree.  The branches would lead to bedroom. Is something like that even possible? I remember seeing something like this in EQ 2 in Fayder years ago and always thought it would be cool to build something like this.

Oh the jokers are coming. Wait till it don't cost anything to play.

    Fizzer.....

I am currently trying to build a rendition of  ....Inn of the Last Home.

It's possible...but I am not satisfied with the looks of it TBH.

I'm a lousy builder myself, too. That's why I take concept art shots or miniature scenery models and try to recreate them. Works well and you learn quite a bit about building that way too. The next time you start with your own idea, you have much more routine into it.

Keep building and you'll get better. And don't get depressed because other people can already make awesome stuff. Look at their work and take inspiration and tips, instead :)

Sorry, but you won't be building lasting relationships like in EQ1, DAOC, or Ultima Online with the mainstreaming SOE is doing for their new "EQ, but Not-EQ" title.

Most adult gamers I've spoken to are completely turned off with the graphical, combat, and mechanic route they're going with EQ:Next, but they're disappointed because they really wanted an EQ-Sandbox.

Can't take a game seriously when there are cartoons running around on my screen with a total of 100 polygons for their bodies with 10,000 polygon faces just so they can use a gimmicky VOIP system just so they can scan your face during convos and see a really unattached expression on your avatar.

I'll form a more solid opinion about the game when I can get my hands on it through.

I've been building pvp style base the last week. I figure I might be better at functional than art lol.

Most adult gamers play WoW so it seems EQL is for me then.

probably best to ignore posts like these.

There are more posts warning about the horrors of penises everywhere than there actually are in game.  I have yet to see a single penis screenshot / youtube video.

This. Everyone is saying it is minimal or nonexistent. But that is simply because everyone who is playing right now has paid for the right to do so and is enthusiastic. When it is F2P, SOE will have to send out lumberjacks to chop down all the penis trees.

That said, while I am taking a pass on EQL, I am really looking forward to building what they let me get away with in EQN. I know it is a different animal, but there will be something to work on there.

Spot on. I thought about it after I posted, as usual ;)

I havent heard much about Landmark since the initial alpha released hype.

Are people still playing it (twitch streamers arent very high anymore).?

Are you enjoying your founders pack access and playing often or have you moved on/waiting for the game to actually release.

Just kind of curious as all news kind of stopped which gives me a bad impression.

I'm in the Alpha and seems like most people in it really enjoy it. Personally, I'm pretty disappointed with how limited the tools are right now and really hope they're revamped and expanded upon. The gimpy tools combined with the (completely expected) Alpha bugs makes building more of a chore than a fun past-time. For instance, on their most recent Landmark livestream, they had a dev sample how "easy" it is to create a "curved" roof. He used the Line tool to basically make three different lines at different angles and then went to combine them for a fake curve. Well, because of the crappy cursor he mis-placed it, the voxels stuck together and looked wonky, and due to a bug with the Undo function he totally wasted the last 6 minutes of the livestream and it was ruined haha.

You have to put a LOT of effort into the buildings to prevent them from just looking like slightly-better-Minecraft. My hope is they add some really sweet props (which are not voxel-based) so people can get detail from those and use the clunky voxels for the larger scale stuff like terrain and walls. All there is to the game right now is harvesting and building, that's it, so if people aren't into both of those things, they should probably wait until the official release and keep their money.

I wonder how many people dont actually care abou landmark and just want EQN to come out asap?
  • cybermerccybermerc Member UncommonPosts: 13

Here is what I have been working on in Landmark. This is my claim. A lot of the props are self made.

Watched the video.  You obviously worked very hard at it.  So this is not a criticism of what you accomplished -- I see what you did and believe you did it to the best of the games abilities (or close enough), but the result (due to what appears to be the game itself) -- it looks like crap.

A game full of this crap -- will look like a bunch of crap.

    No thanks.

My building skills are about a 3 on a scale of 1-10. There are some insanely good looking builds in game. For example - http://i.imgur.com/ILySnjX.png

I say it looks like anything but crap. But to each their own. Don't like it, you don't have to play it.
