To be fair many indi companies go through these problems starting up a game, largely due to low start up finance, it would be nice if they could get loans but there is no capital to secure on. So they forced into this cycle which is frustrating for the fans.
Now a lose of 1.3m (not sure if this counts any start-up investments) is actually chicken feed considering what other games have to start-up with, e.g. SotA has 3.5m in donations and this is not counting KSer.
All these numbers are large which brings me to my next point; The majority of indi games produced are generally done by a group of enthusiasts that have an assortment of skills ranging in the game development fields but little consideration to Project planning, E business commerce, Psychology/Ergonomics. Now you do not need to employ these people full time but have them as consultants with weekly meetings with all the lead developers. It is important to make sure what money you do make does not slip though your fingers in wasted effort.
