Stats and Overcharging

RazankaRazanka Member UncommonPosts: 67

I found a very interesting video that really worried me about this game, take a look.

Judging from the video you can just dump all you points into one attribute and still hit overcharge and the penalty is just outrageous. Just makes me wonder whats the point of putting point's into your character's primary attribute if your armor and passives can make your reach overcharge at endgame.

It's pretty well the same as any other MMO with respect to being able to increase some key attributes through gear and also through stats. But this game has 2 differences:

    1. It has brought back the idea of letting you increase health, magika and stamina (and their associated sub-stats) with points when you level. A lot of other MMOs have done away with this and you get stat increases automatically as you level, and...
    2. There are no cool downs on abilities. Abilities instead use either the magika or stamina pools as the resource that prevents you from spamming abilities forever.

#1 above let's you stack stats in unusual ways and #2 makes you hit the per-level (it's not just an "end game" thing here) soft caps for resources and in-combat regen stats a lot more easily than what you may be used to in other games - it's just one of their ways to balance.

But it does take some getting used to.

I am also worried about how they plan on using soft caps, such limitations usually exist to prevent people with the best gear from being more powerful than intended ( such as 50% haste and 80% armor cap in Wow). In ESO it seems like they are using soft caps to make it viable to use any armor with any role, which is nice in theory, but how the hell is this going to work in progression? This puts horrible restrictions on how you build your character rather than giving you freedom since with every new piece of gear you will have to adjust everything to not waste any stats. It is like a more annoying version of the hit/accuracy stat in other MMOs.

The game is still in beta...and I'm sure things will change some.

Take note of his Mundas stone, and that his armor increases the affects of the Mage Stone by 7%, also high Elf racials are sweet, and he took Sorceror with 2 SP in Capacitor for 10% bonus to magicka regen.  So he is invested, it's just not in the same way most games would do it.  That's the fun part, the same level Heavy and Light armor give the same armor bonuses... it's it how you spend/use the skills.

I'd LOL if everyone picked the race with the best passives for their class and then wished they'd picked something else as they are way over soft cap and want other bonuses that are harder to get...

I just wish they would get rid of overcharge / soft cap because basically we're going to see most players do this since,

Heavy armor buffs health, if caster all points go to magicka or if melee all points go to stamina

Medium armor buffs stamina, if caster all points go to magicka or if melee all points go to health

Light armor buffs magicka, all points go to health (this is the only logical choice, i don't think the magicka/stamina build is going to be very popular)

Then on top off all this we have enchantments. I just feel like hybrid classes are going to get royal shafted come end game.

I do find soft caps annoying but it isn't going to change how I build or play too much. I just hope they publish what these soft caps are so we can avoid them and not figure it out after it's too late. I know people will eventually work them out but it would be nice to know from the beginning.
