New MMO to start playing. I have tried just about everything and still to this day nothing has brought me back to that everquest feel. Everything seems to be just go here do this quest level up move here rinse and repeat handheld style MMO
Now with that said Final Fantasy XIV seems to get great reviews but I refuse to purchase it just to get burned once again. I have been looking around is there a "trial' available for FF that I could try before I buy?

They don't have a trial, but they currently have a beta going on for the PS4 version that's free to try until March 3rd, if you have this console. Otherwise you have to buy the game (it's on Steam now) and you get 30 days free, so if you don't like it you'll only be out of the initial purchase price.
As far as that "EQ" feel, I don't know if there's a modern MMO that can replicate that as most developers have gotten away from that. FFXIV has its share of side quests that are "fetch this" or "kill that" but they're not part of the main story quests which feel a little more epic in scope. Once you reach max level a lot of things open up and taking on the top tier content will be a grind (something that IS present in EQ) as you'll have to repeat them to get geared up, but this isn't really any different than any other MMO.
FFXI was the Everquest style clone mmo.
FFXIV is the wow style mmo clone.
XIV is a pure themepark. 100% linear path all the way to the BIS gear. IF you do not want a hand held, quest hub, throw away content style mmo... you will have to wait and see if EQN actually is decent. Because that is what everything is now days. People QQ too hard without the handholding for devs to risk profitability it seems.
If you are tired of the quest to cap, raid to get tier 1 gear => raid to get tier 2 => raid to get uber leet gear => wait for patch => repeat from start. Then XIV is NOT THE GAME TO PLAY. Because that is what it is 100%, now the game is actully good but it is a 100% WoW style mmo with little to no variations on that. Yoshida keeps saying he belives this model is the way to go so the game will most likly not improve from what it is. IT will just get new content that will replace old content.
As for trials. SE is not the company to usally give free trials. You will have to drop the money to try it, or download the ps4 beta within the next week or so to try it without a charge. Game is fairly cheap to buy though and it comes with 30days. Maby in the future they will. But more chance in my opinion it will go F2P before a trial is given.

As an EQ/EQOA player, I loved the main storyline in FFXIV, I played it all the way though, and then couldn't get over the economy and everything else of 2.1.
I also beta tested ESO, and ESO was more like EQ. It brings back the feeling of exploring and adventuring and I think as an EQ fan you would like that game more. But it doesn't come out for another month. So I say, play though FFXIV main storyline, forget about crafting in FFXIV cause its not even top tier of anything, and then go to ESO where crafting is the top tier gear and everything in the game and has all that you list in your post.
