They changed it at some point, apparently when they got inundated with sock puppet accounts. It went from being a contest to being a random drawing.
That explains a few things, but honestly who was really going to take the time to filter 200 plus pages of people saying "I like Wildstar" and others giving a decent comment as to why they should get a key.

There were only 4500 or so posts. They could at least give priority to people with accounts older then 24 hours.

just because someone does'nt have an account does'nt mean they are'nt regulars.. i've been browsing this page for about a year before i started an account here.. not everyone is here to discuss things some just come for info and stuff

Well, you're both right. MMORPG.com does these giveaways to generate traffic and new people to the website (just as IGN's little giveaway generates them revenue with new Prime members, and Curse getting new Premium accounts). So they cannot just simply disqualify new people from the contest, or they end up alienating the people that they want to attract to the site.
However, that being said, I do think that "lurkers" are indeed NOT regulars. "Regulars" are actually people that regularly visit the website, read & comment on the articles, and read & comment on the forums. Not saying that you need some 10,000+ posts in a year (it's crazy, but some people actually have that), but to contribute a presence within the MMORPG.com community is what makes one a Regular.
P.S. Although yes, I do share a slight opinion that those that make an account on the day of a giveaway, just to get a key, and don't do anything else but post a single "Can haz key pleaze?!" post, is nothing more than a mooch. Sorry, but that's my opinion and I'm entitled to it.

ofc you are entitled to your own opinion but as for the case of this giveaway it's all just about randomness.. there's no loyalty requirement attached to it or anything so if someone's been on here for years posting the crap out of the forums that's good for them but it does'nt guarantee them anything.

There are ways to reward the people that make your site worth a damn on a regular basis and those that you wish to draw to your site as potential new regulars. In a contest like this, you make 500 of the keys available to people with a join date a few days prior to the contest and at least 10 (or some other number) posts. You then make the other 500 keys available to everyone, including the people that didn't get the first 500. The odds for people that regularly contribute are quite a bit higher, but everyone is in the drawing in the end. Of course something like this would require more work, so whatever. That being said, I had a chance to play it last weekend and I would certainly enjoy playing it again, but it doesn't really matter. Once the game releases, I'll be able to play whenever I want.
Not even my promise to adopt 50 homeless puppies if I got a key worked. Should have guessed rng would work against me from my time with Aion's manastone socketing......
Kyleran: "Now there's the real trick, learning to accept and enjoy a game for what

FreddyNoNose: "A good game needs no defense; a bad game has no defense." "Easily digested content is just as easily forgotten."
LacedOpium: "So the question that begs to be asked is, if you are not interested in
the game mechanics that define the MMORPG genre, then why are you
playing an MMORPG?"
Lurker here. Got a key! Check out that start date! Toxic outbursts are too frequent, that is why some people stay quiet here. Unless we want something in particular.
Last weekend, many web sites offered keys. Over 40,000 weekend keys where given out. This weekend, most sites only had 1000 or less keys to give away, most only 100 keys.
They had issues with the server near the end of last weekend and don't want to do another 'stress test'. So only about 5% of the volume of users will be on this weekend.
All those who had fun last weekend, most will miss out this weekend.
The other sites that gave away keys, only gave them to premium accounts or accounts that have been around for a min of 7 days.
...They could at least give priority to people with accounts older then 24 hours.

Well that's entirely the point. This wasn't about randomness. It was supposed to be a contest with judged entries winning...until they got drowned in sock puppet accounts. They were roughly 60 pages into replies when they switched it. Kind of a crappy way to run things.

Where did you read that it was a judged contest? I'm not seeing that. I DO see where it says winners would be chosen at random however.
Edit: On the original thread around page 6, a user mentions the fact that the drawing is random. It is clear from the majority of posts early on that people understood it was to be random. I see no evidence that the deal was altered.

This is completely made up, I have no idea where you're getting this information. The intention was for random draw for days before we even announced anything to you guys. Please do not spread misinformation. This is nothing new. We never give any users preference for these giveaways.
If we have tons of keys, we'll do first come, first serve, as we're confident everyone will get keys (see: ESO), but if we have only 1000 keys (or less) for a hotly anticipated game, we've begun doing random draw contests because people get pretty pissed (and understandably so) when a batch of keys disappears in 10 seconds.

LOL. Not a surprise. New account help mmorpg.com say they have increasing numbers of accounts! So ...

The giveaway was an insult to frequent posters and people who supported this page and kept the forums going for years. Period.
They messed up big time, but then messing up giveaways has a tradition on this site.

Neither I or my partner got a key for this weekend. And we've been registered to the site for many years now.
The 1000 key give away was quite disappointing compared to the previous weekend's 40k.
Guess I'm getting dragged into the ESO beta this weekend. Much against my better judgement.

I too was unlucky... I got invited to all the stress test since Dec. 4th, but would love to get to play it more lol.
I'm addicted to this game, and would give this weekend ESO beta key for a Wildstar Beta key for this weekend if anyone is up for it.
