I only like PvP if it is optional or if the sole purpose of the game is revolved around PvP. Griefing=bad , you shouldnt be able to grief unless you also suffer some sortve hurtful penatly by doing it. Such as not being able to buy anything from npcs or get quests from there or enter towns because guards will KoS.
I like it the Guild Wars Way

Or is PvP for a reason a better system?

I think that PvP/PK is best when those who want to participate have seperate areas from those who would rather not be involved. It's definitely a vital part of any MMORPG, but competely open PvP/PK and a few corrupt pros could completely waste every single newbie that comes into the game. PvP/PK is a great way for the best players to test their skills against each other (unless they're playing games where level is the only thing that matters, then they're testing their complete devotion to the game and how much time they've spent playing it) and see who's better, but it can definitely annoy people if they get killed without even doing anything. Of course, there are always PvP/PK'ers that have no business doing that and get killed endlessly and then they start going on tirades on how much the game sucks and how much everyone else playing it should get a life, but that's their problem. PvP/PK'ers can do what they will with each other, but leave the (i say this lightheartedly) nicer and gentler players alone.
True most PvP games with levels basically becomes a test of who can spend the most time vs who can find the most exploits vs the zerg Guilds....Sure the are some skilled players who compete w/o cheating, bringing 20 of their friends or an alt buff bot, but guys who have been around gaming for a while either accept it and adapt or find a new genre. The will always be those who can only have fun at others expense or by killed people who can't fight back...fact of life on a world where computer nerd get beat up by the real bullies
*Ahem*
PVP FOREVER!
I just don't find PVP in online RPGs all that fulfilling. I've never received any thrill for kicking someone's ass because I've spent more time grinding / staring at the wall (I've always been in it for the social aspects).
I love gaming competitively, but just not with mmorpgs.

I like having a choice, simply because I cant be bothered to grind my ass off so I dont get constantly ganked by ppl 50 lvls higher than me. No matter what, if you have open PVP, there will be griefers. Especially if looting other's corpses is possible.
If it was in a full skill system, with no visible levels, I might find it interesting. Then maybe, someone who has more time/patience/whatever, would think a little more before attacking and killing random ppl.
But in the tradition level system (or skill system, if lvls are still visible, theyre the same anyways), it's just no fun. The kids on summer vacation who find it fun to slay 20,000 mobs before they go to sleep at night will shoot up in lvls, and attack anyone weaker than themselves for fun.
I say YES, for PvP during war times (open PvP allowed only at certain times, between guilds, sides, factions, whatever), or in certain zones. I say NO to open PvP and/or corpse looting. I would say yes to some kind of item that drops off a corpse, to symbolize killing that person, but only if it had no other value, so that greifing wouldnt be caused over it.
Those are some nice biased choices. If I choose yes, I'm a bad-ass. if I choose no, I'm a coward.
Pvp in mmo's almost always sucks. The sole exception that I've experienced is DAoC. I'm sure there are others out there that have done it right, but i haven't seen 'em. My point is, pvp is great but it absolutly must have a point to it. Open, mindless pvp is ridiculous in a mmorpg unless you just like ganking people for no reason.
PvP doesn't work in a normal MMORPG set up for several reasons.
1 - Class/Levels - The disparity between players leads to ganking with no real risk to the ganker. A game should have to be potentially deadly to anyone fighting to get rid of the griefing potential.
2 - You can't WIN - People just respawn and grudges develop, death doesn't mean anything.
3 - 1337 |<1|)|)135. Gloating 14 year old kids with no lives who live to gank.
4 - Its antiethical to the origin of the RPG where you work together against an external enemy. The idea of treachery exists in some traditional RPG (Vampire, Paranoia) but is played for laughs or is against NPCs in control of the GM. Intra party conflict always leads to arguments and problems, same in MMOs.
5 - It disrupts the player's view of their character "I'm the hero!"
6 - It increases pressure for 'balancing' so everyone can stand up to each other in PvP rather than accomplish their primary goal well, leading to excess 'nerfing'.
Stick to counterstrike, RPG means more than 'levels and classes'.

I like the PVP on WOW sometimes:P The first day when Honor system was released it was kinda boring because everyone was killing every single guy...but a few days later it started to calm down. But im waiting for Battlegrounds...it will be very fun:P i think
AbOO
I can play a game with zero PvP, but I can't stand ones with full PvP. I like PvP though, but the system must be right. DAoC is my current favorite system mainly because there is no forced PvP, and because of the lack of trash talking between PvPers (except on the boards).

Well the #'s are speaking for themselves.Id like to keep this poll going for a bit so im bumping the thread again.
The reason behind giving 2 choices was to keep it as simple as possible.Ive found that most players either love it or hate it.Giving it a middle ground begins to make it overcomplicated.
Sure there should be a reason for PvP i can get behind that for sure.Otherwise you may as well play UT 2004.Again i wanted a simple poll for a basic idea of what players want.

I like PVP in a Roleplay Context.
I don't like PKing, I don't like Griefing.
Since nowadays 90% of PVP games are all about PKing and Griefing, as a consequence I don't like PVP.
But an RPG with a proper PVP would be the ultimate game for me, problem is that game developers never get it right.
The first game that gets the PVP right, will make videogame history.
Unfortunately I don't see this happening any time soon.

Well so far the #s are speaking for themselves.Looks as if most players prefer PvP in its many forms.

I like PvP cuz you can know if you are strong enough to face other players in a duel... The PvP system that I didnt like is MU's online.. This fucking players that has a higher level will just kill you if they want too..
Good Day...
Not liking pvp doesn't mean you're a coward and liking it doesn't mean you're a bada$$, you just can't say pvp or no pvp, you sound like you're from tibia or a game like it. Pvp is necessary for gameplay, role playing games is just you acting out a different character role than your real life self, so it should the rules and logic should match as closely to real life as possible and still keep the type of genre the game belongs in (i.e.killing people in a fantesy land) But most people are immature brats who say "hey it's a game I wanna be a mass murderer so I will kill anyone I want for whatever reason"
But yea think whatever you want..there is no yes or no to pvp in mmorpg's there is only a yes or no if you're bored or if you're new, for those who say yes they love killing, let me kill you and hunt you down a few times on a pvp world, for those of you who say no let me cheat with your gf or steal your items and laugh at you while yoy whine to people who play the game as there is nothing you can do or will do about it.
I'm not in the mood..
