Hand Holding?

waveslayerwaveslayer Member UncommonPosts: 607

Does Wildstar guide your every step? Does it give you a quest then an arrow showing you exactly where to go?

I am very interested in WS, but I didnt get a beta key , and I will not play another MMoRPG or any RPG that spells everything out for you.

So if any of you guys that did get into beta could answer this, it would really help.

The hand-holding is optional. You don't have to use arrows that will direct you to quest spots.

You have to actively click on the quest to get directions. It doesn't leave the arrow up. Don't expect deep thoughtful quests though. Wildstar is all about the fun combat.

I prefer not to use quest helper systems but the problem is that when the game has a built in quest helper, the quest givers do not give you any hint where you need to go for the quest. In Lotro the quest giver would say "go SW of the great tree". At least you had some idea where to head. Not with quest tracker they just tell you the quest because they know you can click on it for the arrow to tell you where to go. It is a shame.

That said I have really enjoyed Wildstar though the quests are a bit lame.

You dont have to drive a car, you're free to walk

Just be careful not to get run over by those who prefer to drive cars.

To my knowledge the NDA is still in effect, and I do'nt know the entire wealth of knowledge available on public videos so I can't say too much.

From what public videos have shown, yes the game does follow the trend of quest trackers/markers for quests. I can't comment beyond that because I don't know what is public knowledge or not. Particularly relating to the "Explorer" path.

    As an aside,

One of the things I loved about LOTRO was starting a character with the quest tracker and radar map turned off...just using cardinal directions and quest descriptions to find my way. It was quite fun. Slow going, but fun.

    [mod edit]

    Few things:

    a) Game is still under NDA. Even admitting youre playing the game right now is violation of the NDA. Everything ive said has been seen on Twitch streams.

    b) There are hidden caves. Dont assume something doesnt exist just because you havent seen it. Obviously there are no hidden dungeons or majorly important things as then everyone would know about them in short order and they wouldnt be so hidden would they. Although supposedly there will be easter eggs and other fun things to spot. However the point of exploration (outside of the path missons) is to see the world from a different perspective. No one tried to scale the Ironforge mountain in WoW because they thought there was treasure at the top, they just wanted to do it to see if it could be done, period. WildStar gives you a ton of freedom to do that.

    c) If you like more in depth questing, you wont find it in WildStar. This is a fast paced game. Plenty of other games give you a full litany of explanation why youre being sent to kill X and Y. WS devs however (and rightfully so) believe that the vast majority of people dont care and skip the explanation. Back in 2004 when WoW launched one of the very first mods to come out was one that let you skip the quest text as original WoW forced you to read it or wait a specific period before you could skip it. Didnt take long for blizzard to adopt that skip quest text as a default feature, as has everyone else since then

Its still an mmorpg. Theyre not trying to redefine the genre or drastically change it. If they were then it would be a small indie game where they could maybe afford to take such risks. Everyone else who spends 100+ million is going to stay really close to the EQ formula and do non-risky things (adventures, paths, housing etc).

So if youre expecting WildStar to have completely out of order questing progression, and/or have some massive exploration system whereby you can discover whole dungeons that arent on the regular path, AND still expect to have the game be accessible to the average person (because as if the average person can handle all that these days), then id say youre dreaming of a proper sequel to Asherons Call 1. And WildStar aint that. Last game that truly did that on a large scale was SWG. And we know how that turned out...

I'd like to tell him that, but he's probably in a mental asylum by now since he spent that entire 90 levels running dungeons.  Queueing up for instances isn't being held by the hand, btw?

WoD is the only one I expect to pay to play.

ESO and Wildstar offer nothing new.
