ESO Beta - Worse than before NDA release?

GyzarGyzar Member Posts: 10

First off, I'd like to say I like the whole world and concept of the ESO, and I'm not one of those people who's been saying "It's gonna fail!!!" I really like what I've seen so far, have pre-ordered the standard edition, and want to be playing this game for a long time. But, there seem to be significant issues which may derail this game if Zenimax doesn't fix some things fast.

I'd like some feedback from anyone else who's taking part in the open beta this weekend: Is it just me, or has ESO suddenly gotten worse rather than better [more bugs, stuttering, more crashes, etc.]. I realize the game is being stress-tested this weekend, and that Zenimax is going to go back and try and fix the issues which are occurring; but do they have time to fix it before launch.

I've been in 3 closed beta tests for Elder Scrolls Online since November, and up to the test this weekend [Feb 28 to Mar 2] the game seemed to be making progress towards being ready for launch April 4.

On Friday [first open beta] the game seemed to be running ok, but then Friday evening I began to see significant  problems with the interface: Stuttering of both game music and graphics, player-freezes, long pings to the server, and complete disconnects. There were also freezes in the interface when talking to NPC's and when in tasks like crafting. This was occurring with my machine [i7 CPU -w- 16gb ram, Nvidia GTX-660, 50mbs cable-internet connection], so other testers must have been having the same type of problems.

Some of these problems have been ongoing for a long time, and beta testers have continually placed bug reports on them. We weren't allowed to discuss them except in the closed beta forum, because of the NDA.

It's my opinion Zenimax has yet to address the issue of what is going to happen when the game goes live and the mega-server(s) get hit with massive amounts of traffic.

What does everyone else think?

Not that I've played a lot in the beta, but I've experienced none of the issues you've described, yet my hardware is certainly not state of the art.

Maybe your computer is too new?

I've got a new gaming laptop on the way, will be interesting to see if I have more or fewer problems with it.

Hey!  No talking about ESO from the times before the NDA was lifted, that is against the NDA.

Bearing in mind of course that they were actually hammering on the server and stress testing it for load balancing etc. Also bearing in mind that they are using one gigantic megaserver for North America which no one except for EVE has managed to pull off up to this point. Keeping those things in mind then some network connectivity issues are not unexpected.

OP, what OS are you using?  A TON of people were having troubles with Win8.  I'm running a 2nd gen i7 2.0ghz, a 560m 2gb and 8gb of ram in a laptop.  Mostly medium settings with shadows and spell effects turned down.  The only issues I had as far as performance goes was when I hopped into a Cyrodil campaign that was locked on 2 factions.  The lag was horrendous.  Hit button to sheath weapon, 45 seconds later weapon sheathes.  Took almost 2 minutes to access the wayshrine, and another couple minutes to actually port out.  I joined a less populated campaign and it was smooth sailing.

I was, however, noticing a lot more UI crashes and bugs than in previous betas.  One in particular (cursor not going away upon window close) had me relogging every 30-60 minutes.  The game is shaping p nicely, but the lack of polish in the last 3 months does have me a tad concerned.

I played beta on windows 8 cpu:fx6300 gpu:r9270x ram:4gb, i noticed the lag ofc couse that was a stress test, the client didn't crash to much, altough i get disconnected a couple of time. No stuttering for me at all, the worst annoying bug was to get stucked when talking to npcs, i had to reload ui a lot.

Yes. Before NDA release it was enjoyable. After the release I couldn't log out fast enough.

I was in Cyrodiil all last past weekend. It was on of the smoother weekends, besides the wall visual bug.

I think I'm tired of theorizing about what COULD happen at launch.  It's basically a week away, we will find out what happens.
