"There are no gates or delay mechanisms, and no pay-to-win mechanics. All microtransaction items are purely cosmetic -- a style that's often said not to play well with Western gamers despite its popularity in Asia."
"Players can buy time-limited supporter packs that contain credit for microtransaction purchases as well special perks. For example, the Warrior Pack (on sale now for $120 on the game's site) includes exclusive cosmetic in-game items as well as a digital soundtrack and a special title on the game's forums."
And they capture the whales without p2w ...
"He speaks of a time-limited kiwi pet that cost $1,000 and "became such a status symbol" that it sold out quickly"
.... the bottomline ... another free game that I can enjoy.
All MMOs... all Online games as far as I know... are P2Win. P2P, F2P, B2P, it doesn't matter. Have been for years.
Can't see how they make money? Look closer. We are their cattle, I guarantee you they will "fatten us up for slaughter" somehow through their game.
They can't and won't just depend on the generosity of large aquatic mammals.
Originally posted by dave6660 Path of Exile should have charged a small amount for the box. It's a really good game. If Diablo 3 could get away with charging $60 for such a bland and shallow game then anything is possible.
D3 sold 15M boxes at that price .... that is because it has much better combat, and polish. I don't disagree that PoE can do well .. but it will never get into D3 kind of success, in term of sales.
If you just go to xfire, it will give you a sense of how much D3 is more popular than PoE, despite you don't like it.
You see, if you are honest about it, you aren't playing for free. SOMEONE is paying for you to play.
Sure .. it is free for me. I didn't say it is free for everyone. Whales make games free for the majority. That is pretty much the accepted wisdom in F2P games.
The only difference in this one is that there is no p2w, no pay gate, no need to become a whale unless you want cosmetic items.
Well this is hardly an indication of anything,we are talking here of a VERY cheap product, one that costs little to make and very little to operate, this is not a telling story of a full fledged triple A MMORPG.
There is something else that is often overlooked when mentioning cosmetic.Players in EVERY game like cool looking armor, they WANT that armor, that is part of the game's allure and why many gamer's raid boss after boss to get that cool loot.So to say buying it is not pay to win is a far cry from the truth. The only difference is one might have stats and one doesn't but if anyone knows anything about gaming, there is never any real advancement, games hold you in check to the level of enemy you are fighting, you always feel the same versus your equal foes.
Then i am not saying POE does this but many games eventually allow you to pay extra and transfer stats from your fave item to that cosmetic item.
I think even if one refuses to believe the obvious, then realize this, the game's owners do not work for free, they MUST be making money,so that would make it factual that the items are wanted as much as anything in game and not just "cosmetic".
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Originally posted by VengeSunsoar I think its the other way around. The majority are not p2w. Only a minority are however it comes down to the same ole debate of what constitutes p2w.
Yeap. It is about definition. But there are basicly 3 types of f2p shops.. some consider 2 of them p2w other just 1.
1. Cash shop sell items or service which give you an advantage ingame, but you can afford the same ingame with time spent. Like Gear, houses, ships, money, xp potions, but all also available ingame.
2. Cash shop sells items or service which give you an advantage ingame, but you can not afford the same item ingame. Exclusive cash shop content.
3. Just cosmetic or service, with no whatsoever effect on gameplay.
1. & 2. are pay to win with different degree. GW2 would be 1. but the effect on gameplay is rather marginal. EvE is also 1. Some will argue 1. is not P2W.. some will argue it is.
1. are those so called convenience items.. where you have to invest time instead of money to avoid it. Or are just pure pain in the ass not to have.(like extra inventory space for games with obvious not enough inventory space)
-> Basicly give us your money or we will punish you.
2. will be considered from all P2W.
-> Give us your money or you will lose to everyone else.
3. is more or less the only real F2P, because your donation is completely optional.. all other expect that you spend some money on the shop. And only DoTA2 and now Path of Excile are in that category. Both are rather cheap to produce(in comparsions to AAA MMORPGs), and both have a huge following. With other words both will or do well with optional donations on their cash shop. Pure cosmetics, or some voice acting additions.

The problem is Path of Exile is really an exception.
I think the real argument is "almost all" f2p are p2w and not actually free.
You can't take a 1% exception to deny what people are arguing.

Of course i can. I just did.
Plus, there are so many games out there .. 1% can last for a long time.
