Last weekend I was getting Masters on the first try more often than not (and I agree that looking at the bottom of the tumbler for the first indication of shake is probably the easiest way to do it) so practice definitely makes perfect.
.. and then I ran into one chest labeled "Impossible" that was grayed-out, way up at the northern tip of Auridon... first one of those I've seen. Anyone else seen the impossible ones?

Yes!
Always makes me wonder why though. I don't remember a skill increasing to make me better at picking locks...so are they special chests?

I also thought it might have something to do with the upcoming Thieve's Guild... there should be some picking-related perks there, or...
could it have something to do with needing a treasure map to have access to it? Although I thought all map chests were buried and needed to be dug up.

Exactly!
I think the thieves guild thing might be it though. Cause we would probably get that extra skill to pick impossible locks. Notice how wasn't anything between Master and Impossible...like a "whatever dude" or "I dunno man" chest?

I have a long and embarrassing history with lockpicking in ESO. Every time I got to play the game at shows, I would sit down with Paul Sage and he would talk me through whatever they were showing. Inevitably, I would come upon a locked chest and try to pick it. I always failed, no matter what. Paul would try to help me figure it out, but I would still screw it up...
Finally, I got to play the beta and I figured out ESO's lockpicking, so let me share my simple secret with all of you who are having trouble:
Use both left and right mouse click!
It's that simple. Originally, I was trying to use a single clicker to set and release, but it is FAR easier to push the pin down with one clicker held down and use the other to lock it in when you're ready. I went from being unable to pick simple locks to doing master locks in a single attempt.

Nice tip! And I feel your pain lol. Even in-game I tend to do worse when someone is standing there hoping I fail so they can get a crack at it

This is such a good tip. I can't wait to try it. I still have yet to open a chest. Then I finally picked up about 20 lock pics out of Cold Harbor this past weekend and of course I didn't find any chests for 8 levels lol.

That's how I started doing it.....for once I started doing it right from the get go
I feel your pain to though...as my mom (65 years of age) plays and found it the same way til I coached her. She often calls me to do jumping puzzles or this sort of thing....
AND...SO not calling you a 65 year old woman

If you haven't found a chest in 8 levels you should be looking a lot harder. By level 8 you could have opened about 10 chests. Pick a barren part of the map where there are no big structures, and poke around the corners. They are littered across the world.
Hey all, here is a little video on how to do lock picking in Elder Scroll Online. I hope you like it.
Straight to the point and good tutorial; gave you a thumbs-up on youtube for the helpful vid, thanks!

Thank you very much! I have yet to open a chest and now that I've seen how it's done I will look forward to opening an actual chest.
And not breaking every lock pick and then running off saying "I didn't want to open it anyway" ...

Hold pin until it moves, let go.
I've opened every single chest I've found in game. I didn't fail once. Including a few advanced chests.
Guys, this tutorial isn't even needed. It's way too easy.
You can practice in real life with a friend. Put your hand on a table, and when you're friend says "GO!" you take your hand off the table. Brilliant!
